PGA & XM Satellite Radio announce Long-Term Deal
The PGA TOUR and XM Satellite Radio today announced a long-term partnership, which includes exclusive XM broadcasts of PGA TOUR events, as well as sales and rentals of portable XM2go radios at PGA TOUR tournament courses.
Beginning this summer, the PGA TOUR Network (XM Channel 146) will air live tournament coverage each week, plus daily programs designed for golf enthusiasts.
As part of the XM-PGA TOUR agreement, fans who attend select TOUR tournaments will be able to buy or rent a portable XM2go radio to hear the live coverage at the golf course.
Now THAT's cool. XM2go units available for rent at golf courses is a great additional revenue stream, and the best way to sell your product is to let people interact with it. Great move.

Man, I never would have thought they would put golf on the radio. I guess it works though. If your a fan of golf you'll want to know whats going on.

It's not necessarily a sport you NEED to actually watch to know what's going on. So I think it's a good move.
Golf also hits up the demographic of people who have one important thing - disposable income. That's important in an industry that's still considered a "luxury" by many.

... what's more boring than watching golf on television? Listening to golf on XM radio.
While not my bag, I suppose there are some that this benefits. I'm sick of all this crap sports programming though, and if the PGA channel kills another more interesting channel, I'm going to be irritated.
I say throw us non-sports fans a bone and give us the often suggested c-net/g4/geek channel.

"Geek Talk" would absolutely be great. I think the entire talk radio segment needs to be expanded on both SIRIUS and XM - but tech is a subject you really can't get on terrestrial radio.

Wow, playing the sport is pretty fun, watching is ok, but listening? No.

Golf fans will welcome this -- the idea of allowing spectators to rent an XM2Go unit is a great marketing idea for XM.
I don't think either company has one programming item that will "kill" the other (don't even start me on Stern); however, each new acquisition is a piece of a larger puzzle. Sirius has a lead in overall sports, but baseball could be huge for XM -- perhaps it will be to XM what the NFL has not been to Sirius. We will find out this season . . .

This is a deal best looked at from a econmical and promotional stance, I do not belive it will bring in many subs.
