Satellite Podcasting - Official Word from SIRIUS
SIRIUS has just released their official release about the Adam Curry hosting a Podcast Show. Here's the further information we get from it:
The four-hour, weekday program will feature highlights and insights from the world of podcasting and will introduce SIRIUS listeners to a completely new range of talent and artists from around the world, including the best new, undiscovered music.
The program's SIRIUS debut coincides with the launch of Curry's PodShow.com, the first true entertainment and information network in podcasting.
"Podcasting is not just about portable media players," said Curry, the former star MTV VJ who developed podcasting in mid-2004. Explaining how the new collaboration between SIRIUS and PodShow.com takes podcasting to a completely new level, he said, "Podcasting is an entirely new form of broadcasting that enables anyone to create powerful content. By combining the creative talent and content of available podcasting with superior programming of SIRIUS, we can create and showcase talent that terrestrial radio listeners would not be able to hear. We think that this partnership is about introducing the best of podcasting to the world."
Awesome stuff.

I don't get this whole podcasting thing. It's just mp3 files right? If I create an mp3 file of me talking on some subject and put it on the net is that considered a 'podcast'?
How would Sirius choose my podcast to play on the radio? Since I can't actually play Sirius on my ipod would it then not really be a podcast? Isn't this just amature radio? Kinda like open mic night at the comedy club or something? It's not a bad idea but why the name 'podcasting'?
I just turned 31 and already I'm not able to keep up with this younger generation. Podcasting? In my day we just called them mp3 files.

Podcasting is just like blogging, it allows anyone to post just about anything, ranging from music, to science, to talk shows. It is just an MP3, but you don't necessarily need an iPod to download, any MP3 player will do. Depending on how Sirius is planning on doing this podcasting thing, they should have a website that people can upload their stuff to. I AM pretty into it. It's an alternative to terrestrial radio and all the Big Media bullshit. Combine Satellite with Podcasting and you've got radio for the people, by the people.
Yeah sure, it's all just MP3s. But Radio is just a bunch of sine waves. It's not the medium I give a shit about, it's the change in what we listen to.
I see Satellite as a natural progression to the MP3 Player (iPod, whatever). People have a shitload of songs on their iPods, but it's still boring - you want to listen to more stuff, explore new stuff, and not necessarily while your sitting in front of a computer.
So Podcasting allows you to automatically pick up random content (not necessarily just Talk either, there's lots of music available) automatically while you're computer is just sitting there doing nothing. But Podcasting isn't really enough either. You can't just switch to a different Podcast while you're on the road unless you've preselected it for download in the past. And once you've listened to it - it's done, nothing else is left to listen to.
So Satellite is a step further, and is the best of all the worlds. You're connected all the time and you have access to an enormous "playlist" of songs and other shit that isn't available on your iPod or through Terrestrial's crap stations. Satellite gives the ability to listen to songs that you haven't heard in YEARS, and actually gets you excited about music again. The Talk is actually compelling because the people aren't stumbling around FCC restrictions or breaking for 20 minute commercial blocks.
So combine the two! I see Podcasting right now just being a whole lot of hype, but with a ton of potential behind it. If we can stream new Podcast content through the Birds that SIRIUS and XM have up there, then we can listen to a wealth of talent that otherwise isn't available to us through the standard restricted bullshit means.
Anyway. Lotsa people probably disagree and that's cool. I just the hate radio of today.

Well, keep us up to date on it. If it wasn't for Orbitcast I would know half the stuff that Sirius is playing. I never go to sirius site for some reason. I like this one better (I like orbitcast for other reasons besides just sirius schedule stuff too).
So, Ryan, when Sirius starts playing podcasts please post about it so I know when and where to tune in.
I like your explanation. You make it sound cool (like it's a revolution or something). I'm interested.
Thanks,
Monmin

WFT was Curry smoking when he said "Podcasting is an entirely new form of broadcasting that enables anyone to create powerful content."????
Podcasting is about publishing and finding content. Not creating it.
I mean, YOU USE OTHER TOOLS to make a podcast.
What I think he should say is "Podcasting is an entirely low production values form of broadcasting. Buy lowering the cost, we lower the barriers of entry, and any moron with a microphone suddenly is a podcaster. Hell you don't even need a mic, you can use one of the phone services that let you leave a voicemail message and have it published to the world."
I'm kind of joking, but not completely.
The internet has allowed all sorts of new forms of broadcasting (or more accurately narrowcasting). The improvement that podcasting brings to the table that other streaming audio broadcasting formats didn't offer was a way to easily grab all this content for on demand listening AWAY FROM THE NETWORK.
If we had cheap, always on high speed wireless devices, we wouldn't need podcasts - people could just stream whatever they wanted when they wanted to.
After all, downloading all these podcasts that you end up never listening to and skipping over isn't very efficient! It costs the providers money in bandwidth whether the audience listens or not!

This podcasting is a great idea. There are tons of interviews and events that I'd love to be able to download after they air. I think Sirius subscribers will love it, you know another extra included with the monthly fee.

Well, podcasting may or may not be a "revolution" in broadcasting or whatever, but it sounds like a corporate wet dream. Think of it: FREE CONTENT AND FREE LABOR!
Maybe McDonalds will adopt this "revolutionary" approach to THEIR business and let you GO BEHIND THE COUNTER AND MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD! Haven't you always wondered what it must be like to shake that fry basket? Here's your big chance to sell Shamrock Shakes!
Working for free! Yeah, THAT'S the American Dream.
