Sportster IR Unveiled!
An anonymous reader sent in some juicey photos of the new upcoming Sportster IR (Instant Replay) first shown at CES. According to reliable anonymous sources, the Sportster IR will be available in stores next week.
The new Sportster IR has been redesigned to be sleeker than it’s predecessor, with an integrated FM transmitter and a new antenna. But the real feature that everyone’s been waiting on with the IR, is the built-in internal memory that lets you record up to 44 minutes of content for later.
The blue displays shows quite well in sunlight:

More photos after the jump…
Check out the antenna and remote:

Very cool. Special thanks to all those who risked their lives leaking this out. :)

not all that different than the original. :(
44 mins of recording is really all not that much compared to the MyFi 5 hours worth.
Did anyone read the Business 2.0 article on XM? good stuff

Dave,
If the Sportster was designed to compete with the Mifi, you would have a valid point! But its not!!! The Sportster was designed to compete with the Skyfi2 that only has a 30 minute buffer.

it can even get busy in a burger king bathroom
Posted by: brendan at May 25, 2005 10:30 AM
That's definitely a step in the right direction - something comparable to the SkyFi2.
Anyone know how much it costs?
Posted by: Doug C. at May 25, 2005 10:30 AM
I think the price tag will be around $200. No exact word on that yet tho.
Posted by: Ryan at May 25, 2005 11:07 AM
this is *your* chance to do the hump!
Posted by: al at May 25, 2005 11:18 AM
What an ugly piece of equipment! It doesn't look much better than the original and it doesn't even compare to the SkyFi2. It doesn't look sleek at all; it looks clunky and cheap!

Sirius once again proves it is on the cutting edge of technology. If you forget XM is even exists. How long has the Skyfi2 been out?
Posted by: Johnny K at May 25, 2005 12:11 PM
I wonder if you can move from song to song, like the XM units? If not, than you are stuck with a 44 minute block. At $200, it better include a car or home kit.
Posted by: iband at May 25, 2005 12:32 PM
I've seen it listed for $165
Posted by: Charlie at May 25, 2005 12:47 PM
Minimum advertised price is $169.99. Maybe it is offered for less but not supposed to be.

Sirius has to produce a product that at least comes close to XM. I think they are headed in the right direction. You got to give them credit for working around the problems they have with their chipset. It makes development more expensive while producing an inferior product - comparitively speaking.
Much better to be on the XM team in this regard.

Nice fish finder..

Let's not even use the MyFi as a basis for comparison. That product was a great idea with poor execution. The IR looks to have just what you need. 44 min buffer is plenty, why would you need more? How often would you need to rewind back 5 hours? If you ask me, I would say you need no more than 30 minutes of buffer. This product is firm next step in their product offering.

I have a MyFi and the reception is horrible. I can not even pick-up any NFL games with it.

I have a MyFi and the reception is horrible. I can not even pick-up any NFL games with it and I heard the reception for Nascar races will soon get a lot worse too.

An absolutely beautiful piece of equipment! Yet another step in the right direction for SIRIUS.

You can buy the Sirius Sportster IR next week for $119 after the $50 mail in rebate. I believe Circuit City will receive the radio first. I notice there are a lot of paraniod and scared XM'ers posting today. A very good sign for Sirius. Someday the respective fans will realize what is good for one is good for the other. The name of the game is Satellite Radio, not my dad can beat up your dad.

No it is not just a big block, you can go back and go through the socks that have been played. -in response to Johnny K's comments

Congrats to Sirius for only taking half a year to clone the SkyFi2.
Posted by: Greg at May 25, 2005 08:23 PM
The skyfi2 has been able to go back over 50 minutes for a year and a half now. Congratulations on finally moving up to the 21'st century sirius.

The only thing cool here is the slim look of the antennea, everything else is old hat. Way to catch up sirius
Posted by: Ryan at May 26, 2005 12:03 AM
Oh snap! Jimmy just gave you a grammatical smackdown!
Posted by: Doug C at May 26, 2005 08:58 AM

The sportster looks to be a great peice of equipment. IMHO it looks MUCH better than the SkyFi, who wants a basically white screen? I do believe that the Sportster IR will beat the SkyFi 2 in all aspects. I think a lot of these XMers on here are jealous, so it's late, better late than never! For those who call this old, then they are calling XM equipment old also. Heaven forbid you wouldn't want to do that!
Posted by: SISO at May 26, 2005 10:55 AM
Here's the thing you have to remember: the time-shifting on the Sportster IR is on what you recorded, not what's on now. The SkyFi2 can do live programming on the fly 30 minutes prior to now. This one can do 44 minutes, but you have to have recorded it and switch over to it.

This sirius unit is big enough to anchor a row boat.
Posted by: LiL Conner Peterson at May 26, 2005 01:07 PM
I just saw the Marine kit for this unit!!! It's AWESOME!!! It's a 50 foot chain and this is the anchor. I wonder why XM has 3 times as many customers?!
Posted by: BMAX at May 26, 2005 01:10 PM
Thank you for releasing this unit!

Gazeu says, " The IR looks to have just what you need. 44 min buffer is plenty, why would you need more?"
Lets see...the last time I checked there are 24 hrs in a day...I sleep for about a third of that...am at work where I can't listen another third. Yes...it's good to be able to set a radio to record a big block. Example: Coast2Coast on XM...it's from about midnight to 5am...I couldn't listen to that on Sirius even if the program was carried there.

xm rules in every way. sirius will be broke in a few years. opie and anthony will crush stern!!
Posted by: corkey at May 26, 2005 03:24 PM
wtf? i have a big screen TV that is less clunky than that thing
Posted by: rio at May 26, 2005 07:38 PM
I don't understand why ppl are calling it clunky. If you are calling the Sportster clunky then you're calling XM's hardware clunky to.
I'm betting on XM O&A has about 50-100k listeners. Millions of people will move to Sirius for Howard..now you tell me who's beating who?
Posted by: BJ at May 26, 2005 10:49 PM
O&A do not have 50-100k listeners. if you listened to them and also had an inside source like i do, you would know that when XM signed O&A, they had about 2.4 Million subs, after 2 months they had a little under 3 Million subs, and now about 8 months after they signed with XM they XM has hit 4 Million subs. Not to mention one of the reasons why Hyundai went with XM in their new cars is because they did a survey and found that the majority of people surveyed, said that they didn't want Stern in their Car (Which i think speaks for itself)...Then again I'm not saying that O&A are the only reason why XM gained so many listeners, they were the major part, but not the only part of it. And I will say this, one of reason why i didn't go with Sirius over XM (I got XM before I found out O&A were going there, luck sided with me i'd say) was because they are not technologically at the top of the game (I'm the type of guy that needs top of the line stuff).

Arf Arf its the dog catcher you better run bitches!
Posted by: Eric Logan at May 27, 2005 03:46 PM
Lets see here Sirius's Sportster IR= 44min playback. XM Myfi= 5 hours Playback. Hmmmmm I wonder who has the best product to sell. O&A PARTY ROCK!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Angry Pirate at May 27, 2005 06:34 PM
Myfi cost $130 more
Posted by: yoursOgAy at May 28, 2005 01:04 PM
I have XM and its the XM people that are being stupid. Stop comparing the Sportster IR to the Myfi it should only be compared to the SkyFi2. I am waiting for a person to say the Roady2 does not have any recording capabilities so it sucks compared to the Sportster IR.

My portable sirius unit hurts the back more than a shitdick
Posted by: Panzerfaust at May 30, 2005 05:15 PM
I currently subscribe to XM but will move to Sirius with Stern. But why, for the love of god, must all the Sirius radios be such crap??? XactCommunications is also coming out with a new radio - a 4-hour recording, MP3 playing unit that is as ugly as the day is long.
Can't these jack-offs hire a real hardware designer? Aren't they the least bit interested in being innovative?
