Ah, the importance of a name
Here's a fun bit. The FCC has given two local television stations some fairly, uhm, unique call letters.
KUNT was assigned to a low-power digital television station in Wailuku, Maui. Yes, KUNT (they're not on the air yet). In Arizona, KWTF was the designated call letters.
Both were assigned to KM Communications who apparently missed the offbeat references in the sea of selections. The company offered a sincere apology "to anyone that was offended," said Kevin Bae, vice president of KM Communications, who requested and received KUNT and KWTF. It is "extremely embarrassing for me and my company and we will file to change those call letters immediately."
Giggle-inducing call letters aren't new, or relegated to television. KCUF-FM near Aspen, Colorado got its call letters in August of 2005 and has been on the air since December. (If you're scratching your head, just spell KCUF backwards.)
Then there's KLIT, the former call letters of a FM radio station in Fountain Valley, California. Which I think would make for some killer sweepers.
Let's just hope that Sirius/XM give their new name a bit more thought than some broadcasters do.

Thanks realwx!

KUNT should show nonstop reruns of Leave It to Beaver.
There's also a KLAM, in Alaska I think.

Wow, who knew the government and the entertainment industry could be so funny? They better not change those names. Just think of all the promotions that KUNT could do on Tuesday. KWTF could do a segment on performance art and has the perfect way out each time when the show bombs.

Do you really think there will be a new name for the combined satellite radio companies? Anybody care to write about why it should keep one over the other or start fresh? (As an XM fan, of course I would prefer it keep that name.)

Of course, the first time someone says KUNT on the air, the same FCC will fine them.

"Of course, the first time someone says KUNT on the air, the same FCC will fine them."
You kind of beat me to it, Dude. Another article I read about this said that the FCC will NOT entertain complaints from the public about call letters, no matter WHAT they are. So, how can they issue fines for a "dirty" word if a radio or TV station can have the SAME WORD as its NAME?
Methinks someone didn't think this all the way through.

Whoever asked for WLOL, it's in Minneapolis on 1320 AM. KLOL is in Houston. It's a Clear Channel FM that plays Spanish music.

KLIT was actually originally 101.9 in LA....As 'messed up' as it sounds, nothing more than "K-LITE".
WLOL in Minneapolis was at one point a big Top 40 on 99.5 in MPLS, it's a reference to "Land Of Lakes".
There's also, or was, a "WUSS" I think somewhere in Jersey.
There have been others, too....I recall an AM/FM pair in I think it was Kansas, owned by a University no less, that used the calls KFKU/KANU.
