RJ HeltonFormer American Idol contestant, RJ Helton, came out of the closet publicly for the first time on Wednesday, October 18th to host SIRIUS OutQ host Larry Flick on his show OutQ in the Morning.

During the interview, Helton said "just because I am gay does not mean I can’t love God."

Helton was a top five finalist on the first season of American Idol and SIRIUS OutQ is the gay channel on SIRIUS Satellite Radio - put the two together and you've got a coming out party.

Check out excerpts from the interview after the jump...

(Flick and Helton were discussing Helton’s most recent music projects.)

LARRY FLICK: What made you decide not to do inspirational music anymore?

RJ HILTON: ...the industry has just really jaded me... I can have a faith but can’t be who I want to be or who I feel that I am... so a lot of it was just personal things I needed to overcome and just be proud of who I was... just because I am gay does not mean I can’t love God.

LARRY FLICK: Well there you go..congratulations. This is something that I wasn’t sure you were going to talk about on the air today so what made you decide to come out?

RJ HELTON: Today..this morning..3 seconds ago. I’ve never even said that. It feels good.

LARRY FLICK: Does it feel good?

RJ HELTON: It does feel great. It feels good. I’m just really comfortable with who I am now. I’m very proud of who I am.

What a surprise!!!

wow. it seems like only yesterday that i didn't care.

Does anything broadcast on Sirius really count as "public"?

i hear that he wants to be called pest for some reason.

"i hear that he wants to be called pest for some reason."

he must know that howard stern sucks too.

"i hear that he wants to be called pest for some reason."

he must not be into things that were cool in 1991 either.

remember chicago , it's better to be a has been than a never was.

"remember chicago , it's better to be a has been than a never was."

so you're admitting Stern's a has-heen?

or a has-been, even.

only if pest call o/a never was.

"remember chicago , it's better to be a has been than a never was."

try telling that to Mr. Clemm.

In the Bible it says that gay people will go to hell!
