XM has issued another update about the service outage, this time giving more color behind exactly what happened.
"We quickly identified the problem and are working hard to return to our normal levels of service. The problem occurred during the loading of software to a critical component of our satellite broadcast system, which resulted in a loss of signal from one of our satellites. We expect normal service to resume midday today (eastern daylight time)."
XM also apologized for the downtime, and encourages users to go to XM Radio Online if you're near a computer.
UPDATE: The statement was updated to give more clarity on the outage, and so I've updated this post to reflect the changes.
Or, if you cannot get the XM online stream to work, here are other ways to replicate some of your favorite XM channels....
Ethel - Load up a My Chemical Romance CD and press REPEAT then ALL.
Fred - Load up a Morrissey CD and then shoot yourself for owning a Morrissey CD.
Squizz - Load up a Tool CD and have a friend say, "Next up, some fucking more fucking Tool.." in between each track using his best Bodhi voice.
Xm seems to have some bad luck over the years. With bs court cases, o and a, fcc regulating their services, and now this. Hope sirius can keep there nose clean. I know they had to face some similiar problems as well, but nothing to big so far.
But if the merger went through what would happen with the satelites? Do they launch new ones that can accomadate both and sell off the old ones? Or is it a simple upgrade made to the satelite? or do they simply make new products with both recievers?

I thought that the spare satellites were intended for times like these. If they're not going to bother switching over when one of the regular birds goes down, then what's the use of having them up there?
Finally got through to customer service (after being disconnected 1/2 a dozen times)and they were pretty much clueless about what was going on (or at least the woman I spoke with was). She said she sent a signal to my radio and that I should "put the radio on to channel 1 for 20 minutes, then change to channel 7 for 10 minutes and then switch the radio to channel 175" and then it should work. If not she said then the problem was most likely my equipment ans she would be more then happy to offer me a "great deal" on a new radio!!!

Pretty much. I've only been reading Orbitcast for a week or two, but whenever the O+A vs Stern issue comes up, it's always because someone is talking Stern up and trashing O+A.
Trolling can be funny and all (GNAA), but this same old "lol stern rulz o+a droolz" shit is getting really, really tiresome. The overwhelming majority of both Stern fans and O+A fans really don't give a fuck about this stupid rivalry nonsense, but that doesn't stop the bottom of the barrel from bringing the issue up ad infinitum.

Yeah, it's real tough trying to figure out what those stations play. I mean, they are all under the rock bundle and I know going to the website to learn more or even just reading the channel guide is mindblowing work. I don't listen to Fred/Ethel/Lucy but I do know what's on them, it's not rocket science. I guess Octane's a channel about gasoline & cars right? Do you have so little to hate about XM that you're moaning about the channel names? What about your screen name. That was funny when I was 8.
I didn't even notice the signal was down, my radio is off more than it is on now that O&A are off, what is there to listen to? Music? Gotcha...
