Bubba the Love Sponge and executives at Sirius Satellite Radio appear to be having a disagreement about on-air material, and emotions have come to a head.
Yesterday, claims from Bubba that Sirius is censoring the show reached a heated moment when Tim Sabean, Program Director of the Howard Stern channels, called into the show. The on-air argument ended with Sabean hanging up on Bubba.
Listen to audio of the incident below:
Whether or not you're a fan of the Bubba the Love Sponge show, the issue of using the "corporate dump button" isn't a new one to satellite radio, and many listeners considered it to be completely unacceptable.
These channels bill themselves as being uncensored, and many times that includes the portrayal of opinions that may be unpopular with the company. Unless there's obvious issues with libel, defamation or other legal matters, there shouldn't be a reason to censor on-air material.
We still don't know the full story (especially behind the scenes), so look for more info on this as it develops.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

What is a "Bubba the Love Sponge" anyhow?? Hey, did you see the picture of Jewel? Now thats news I like to view!!
Why the fuck does Sirius market as "uncensored" if that's not the case? Was it libel?
F Sirius, F Tim Sabean, this is sat radio there should be NO dump buttons. Yet another fact to prove sat radio is on it's way out.

Anyone have a YouTube of a frustrated Sirius subscriber smashing his radio in protest yet?
"Anyone have a YouTube of a frustrated Sirius subscriber smashing his radio in protest yet?"
I believe Bubba would need some listeners in order for that to happen.
Censoring satellite radio, that I pay for, is completely unacceptable. The double standard that Sirius employs when dealing with Howard Stern and all other on air talent is painfully obvious to anyone who listens to multiple shows. It truly is a sad testament that the people at corporate are so nervous and threatened by anyone who does something remotely edgy that they have to cut it out, dump it, or censor them in some other way. Howard gets away with stuff because he is the face of the franchise, he is a major stockholder, and controversy is expected from him. Anyone else will have their creative freedom crushed and they will just replace them with inexperienced and unbearable on air personalities like Jay Thomas or Jackie Martling.
If you don't believe that Sirius is censoring creativity all you have to do is listen to Bubba's terrestrial radio show and you will quickly realize that he is allowed to do more on his terrestrial show than he is on his "uncensored" satellite show, the only exception being the curse words.
I truly hope Sirius wakes up and returns to allowing their on air people the creative freedom to do their show otherwise, I truly believe, the only thing left on satellite radio when Howard Stern retires will be music and that isn't worth $13 a month.
I love tim Bubba was a brut he should not have been so mean.
I am a dumb redneck who thinks we should say anything even if it violates a contract, or gets the company sued.
Inbreeding is dangerous this is why Kidd Chris is in Negotiations with Sirius radio as we speak Bye BLubba when the FCC shuts cox down he will have no more hot wife no show just a lame podcast.

""Why the fuck does Sirius market as "uncensored" if that's not the case? Was it libel? ""
It was a 3 second possible Contractual Violation, done in order to prevent problems.
This is overblown paranoia.
Tim Sabean and Sirius had BETTER realize what they have in bubba. The guy went from LAT to FIRST in ONE BOOK in Tampa. His show is literally the best on Sirius. They'd better start realizing that Bubba is going to be gone if the don't start treating him better.
i came to sirius for stern, but now like bubba better.
It's sad to see things like what happened on Bubba's show. A big draw for people was the promise of "No more Bullshit" and "Uncensored Radio". I can understand Sirius having a dump button to protect themselves in certain situations where they may get sued, etc.
If this is the sign of the future of satellite radio, and a merged company I pity myself and everyone else that owns a Satellite radio.
Sirius: Time to get your head out of your ass and run your business like you want it to succeed ... and get back to what you initially promised the millions of consumers that have bought into your product.

I can understand Sirius having a dump button to protect themselves in certain situations where they may get sued, etc. But they need to exercise a little restraint. If this is a supposed contract violation then Bubba is a grown man and can pay the consequences without having a babysitter sitting in NYC slapping his hands everytime.

"i came to sirius for stern, but now like bubba better"
That's like saying I went to Hooters for the girls, but ended up enjoying drinking the toilet water better.
Tim Sabean is the new Pig Vomit.
I'm listening to less and less of sirius.
A wave of censorship is comming down on sirius and not just on bubbas show.
They're becomming worse that what they set out to replace.
Been thinking about dumping my Sirius radio'S ever since the "merge" plan was hatched (the "merge" if approved is not be done for consumers, and consumers will be the ones getting screwed by it) Now this BS.... I'm done paying for corporate censoring radio. xm and sirius were to be different, there are few stations on both which everyone is aware are raw (or so we thought) this is not the best radio on radio. Like they say it's Time to Upgrade to HD Radio, sat radio is for some reason doing it's best to kill itself sooner than later. Guess the bills are still stacking up and reality has set in. Oh well it was a nice try at a poor business plan.
I did it, I hit the button, I don't want a Bubba the Sponge on my channel, Hoo Hoo Right Robin, Robin? get back over here and help me with my wig, Hoo Hoo
Once again, the overthinkers at Sirius corporate have shot themselves in the foot. We were given statements, in regard to the Howard Stern channels, of welcome/join "the revolution". What revolution were they speaking of -- new ways to censor a medium that was touted as censor-free radio? You know darn well that the FCC, the NAB, and Clear Channel are absolutely loving this right about now.
Unfortunately, this situation was handled all wrong because both guys involved were both caught speaking through their emotions instead of "working smart". Bubba plays out his personal life on the air -- it's a major part of his life, and the vast majority of his fans are captivated by it. However, as frustrated as he was with the nonsense dumping of what none of us will ever hear, Tim was initially correct in saying that it should have been handled after the show and off the air. But again, for those of us that are fans of the show, it certainly made for compelling radio.
I certainly hope that the Sirius overthinkers will collectively pull their heads out of their respective posterior regions and realize that they're about to push the NUMBER TWO radio guy in all of satellite radio out the door and, most likely, a pretty good number of subscribers who are loyal fans of Bubba and his crew.
Libelous material WILL BE DUMPED.
Get used to it.
Bubba was wrong, anyone who doesn't see that is a tool.
Nice audio!! When did Bubba start talking like Donald Duck? I must say, its different, if he would only start talking like Goofy or Mickey Mouse-Then I would listen everyday!!!!
"I'm done paying money for BS radio. Bring on the HD Radio"
Yeah. HD radio gives us BS radio for FREE!!! (after you buy a unit for a couple hundred $$)
There's two big problems that Sirius is dealing with and its bad news for everyone: Lawyers and politicians. We're screwed.

i can do without howard because i am not a howard junkie
if you are fine - enjoy him

are these guys stupid?(including Bubba)
They need to quiet down until the merger goes thru--Creating waves at this critical time doesnt help the situation--Behave, just for alittle while bubba---jeeze--after that, go nuts
The reason why this is an issue is because Stern could probably get away with saying whatever he likes and Bubba can't. The standard really should be across the board. At the same time, I do believe that the whole purpose of being on Sirius is to not be censored. If Sirius wants to take a hard line on stuff that matters (odds are this was one such time), they need to lay off Bubba on the other things.
For instance, I really see no reason why the Bubba Gas Chamber couldnt have gone forward provided everyone signed off, etc. It's Bubba's studio and place, Sirius is merely providing the radio waves. It's not like they were going to do it at Sirius in NYC.
There needs to be some compromise here, and soon, or Bubba will be gone, one way or another. I do think that Sirius hasn't given Bubba a list of things that are taboo, so he just has to push the barrier and see what happens.
I don't know who 'Droo' is above, but it wasn't me. I've been Droo here for years, so apparently it's an unoriginal 'tool' as he accused others of being.
Are they still on? I thought Stern retired and Bubba went back to regular radio.
"Are they still on? I thought Stern retired and Bubba went back to regular radio."
Stern didn't retire, he was in the news a good bit not long ago when Anna Nicole died. I think he just wanted her money anyhoo. I know not of the Bubba Spongepants or whatever his name is.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was a "planned bit".
One of the frustrating things about this situation is that the Bubba Show can't backup or prove their side of the story by playing what was dumped. It will go down as something that was in violation, when that might not be the case. If I was accused of saying or doing something wrong I would like to plead my case.
Bubba is on both now. He does a morning show (6-10 AM) for a couple of classic rock stations in tampa and i believe Orlando. The ratings just came out and he was the number one morning show in the markets too. And he does a afternoon show on Serious.
I don't know what's more boring:
1. The bald headed guys with sunglasses look.
2. The Bubba the Love Sponge Show
3. The programming over at XM.
Hugh Panero must be at Sirius . Remember the suspension with Opie and Anthony ?
If the agreement is that Bubba cannot talk about his FM show during his Sirius show and if he does, then it will be dumped, why is this such a big deal ? Sirius reserves the right to dump anything they want.
Tim & Bubba both over reacted; it should have been handled off air. But don't forget Bubba has his FM deal to fall back on, so he can play the tough guy with Sirius.
Shit Stacker Stinks
Wow sounds like 5's of 10' of fans could be dissapointed.
I can understand slander, libel, and personal info being censored in any medium. But when you can't speak freely, especially in an "uncensored forum" like Satellite radio (which is a PAY service, mind you) then Corporate and Government Stiffs control the world, and there's nothing we can do about it.
I can't imagine why we're taught that 3rd World Governments aren't the way to live life. It's becoming the same life here in the US.
If I wanted censored radio, and dumped bits, I'd turn on the FM! The Sirius overthinkers are getting a bit too big for their britches I think.
Vote with your wallets guys DUMP Sirius AND xm. Why pay money for corporate controlled BS radio? Why pay for another version of what we get for free on AM/FM/HD? We all were led to believe "Join the Revolution", We all were led to believe "The Best Radio on Radio" only to find out later the TRUTH is sat radio is just more corporate controlled BS. I was listening yesterday Bubba said nothing liable, Bubba said nothing which put Sirius in any bad light in fact like normal he was praising being at Sirius. Put yourself in Bubba's or Howard's shoes they are working doing what they do, trying to do their best to entertain us and some ahole is hitting the DUMP button on them.
DUMP Sirius AND xm, DUMP them for DUMPING and showing NO RESPECT for us nor the people we tune into to entertain us. It won't be long before sat radio implodes, it won't be long before the only place to hear Bubba and the rest of the entertainment we want will be back on good old AM/FM with the new HD Radio UPGRADE.

I'm right there with you, ordered my HD Radio today. I too am over paying a subscription for corporate radio, spotty coverage, as a xm and sirius customer its my opinion sat radio is in a major decline, no matter what Mel and company are promising sat radio is a FAD that is just about over.
Does anyone even KNOW what the hell was "dumped"?? Until I see a post claiming what we missed, and a clear and concise comment about whether or not it was "libel" or "defamatory" to SIRIUS/Bubba, I'm done considering this a controversial matter. Show/tell me what was dumped to get to this state of "pissed-offedness".
Wow! HD radio fans seem VERY organized. That is one strong grass-roots campaign! Are Sirius' money troubles so bad that they can continually crap on the second highest rated talk radio program on either service? Rabid fans can't be bought, but they should be appreciated. Without talent, Sirius and XM are just jukeboxes and will never be able to generate the ad dollars Mel hopes for.

I know what your doing. your fat ass is tired of working 8 hours a day and want to be fired so you can still be paid due to your contract and then your fat ass will go back to working 4 hours a day. Sirius is great Bubba you would fscrew up a wet dream. The perfect job and your head is as big as your fricking stomach. Screw you you lazy fat ass
I was theone who said screw up a wet dream. I didnt see that if you didnt list your name you would be listed as a Anonymoous Coward. No Coward here Thhats Tim Davis from Bradenton you fat ass
been listening to stern for over 20 years... even listened to o & a for a short while back in the day... started listening to bubba 1/9/06 and was hooked after a couple of months! he puts howard and all others to shame with his insane work ethic and his desire to put on a good show every single day! and for the record, i can't stand wrestling or nascar. (which he's cut back on a lot in the past year) he just puts on an entertaining show and still has enthusiasm for what he does, unlike most other radio personalties these days.
It is all a work. Great stuff.
Im through with bubba! Im not stupid how many times does he say im doing 2 shows a day. Im doing 2 shows a day. Wow a whole 8 hours a day. Hey Bubba welcome to the working world!
If he doesn't have any show prep to take up his time he starts his first show at 6am and ends his second show at 7pm. Seems like a lot of work to me. Sure their is a break, but there is also show prep, let alone all of the communications he has to do with guests, and legal matters, and dealings with Sirius and Cox.
You don't really think the nightly new anchor goes into work at 6pm and leaves at 6:30pm do you?
I joined for Howard and have 3 subscriptions. The only reason that I still have 3 subscriptions is because of Bubba.
I rarely listen to Howard anymore, I prefer to listen to the AM online Bubba feed.
I understand both sides of this argument.
I really enjoy Bubba and hope that Sirius will keep him. He his talented, and doesn't take the summer off like Howard.
I hope that both sides can take a step back, and get a renewal to his contract at Sirius.
Bubba is a hack, but censorship on satellite is lame.
im pissed, heres my vid to protest this bullshit
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ltlApFBjd2A
Tim is the new Tom (Chiusano). Sabean was very unprofessional when he spoke to Bubba on the air. This does not look good for Sirius management and could quite possibly put the merger in jeopardy not to mention thousands of paying customers canceling their subscriptions. I expect a public apology from Sabean. I doubt Howard will touch the subject on Monday. Howard wants to do as little as possible and doesn't want to rock the boat. He is counting the days until retirement.
Bubba sucks! I say fire him now while you can! He is the only downfall to 100 and 101. He totally lost me as a fan when he said the first thing Mel should do is fire Opie and Anthony when the merger happens.
I don't listen to bubba, but Sabean should be fired....immediately....There is no excuse for that on satellite radio...

"hey everyone, i had a great great nights sleep last night, headed to the clem gym with heather, then to a personal appearance for miller lite and my dirt late model, i have to take this time to thank everyone for being so cool and supportive during the past few days……as you know we had a bump in the road with our boss and sirius on thurs during the state of the bubba address, i have been on the boards and read most of the posts, and for the most part, you guys have been great….i cant begin to tell you how much that means to me, when the chips are down, and we are in a tough spot,,,,,,you always are cool…
i realize that we all bust balls. and the boards do the same, but you guys mean so much to me, and again i am thankful to all of you…….at the end of the day, i am guility of one thing, wanting you (the fans) not to get a fucked with product, i dont want it watered down by someone who has never done a day in radio, i dont want someone to edit your questions, and our answers to those questions, we are one of the only shows that cares enough to do this sort of thing, all parties involved have to give us the credit we deserve, we are a proven show, that will not overstep the rules, take off the training wheels and stop insulting my radio professionalism, i came back to sirius for the fans, and for howard, stop trying to overthink this process, i want to be there, i want to promote sirius to all that will listen, and i am thankful, and i think all of that shows…….enough for now, i am sure this post in itself will get me a phone call this weekend or monday, which in itself is a problem as well..

will you people please quit kissing HD Radio's ass, it a failer and the reason for Sirius censoring their shows and music is to kiss the FCC's ass for the pending merger with XM.

I also done paying money for BS radio. Bring on the HD Radio. Bubba and many more will be back on HD Radio soon enough, as sat radio's 15 minutes of fame is OVER. AM/FM/HD are going blow sat radio out of the water.
Clear Channel, Cumulus Broadcasting, Citadel Broadcasting, CBS Radio, Educational Media Foundation, American Family Association, Salem Communications, Entercom , Saga Communications, Cox Radio, Regent Communications, ABC/Disney, Radio One, NRG Media LLC, NextMedia Group, Family Stations, Entravision, Three Eagles, Mulitcultural Radio, Nassau Broadcasting, and the others might have been beat for a short time by Sirius and xm spending more than they should have to take talent and content away from traditional AM/FM/HD Radio, but that won't happen again. For one neither sat radio company has any money to sign any other talent/content much less maintain the talent/content that they currently have, as the contracts are starting to run out. Second most corporations want nothing to do with advertising on sat radio they have stuck with AM/FM/HD Radio. The advertising corporations with AM/FM/HD Radio are biding their time and looking forward to bringing back the talent, content and focus back. Third the talent and content (like us) have learned sat radio is nothing but pay corporate radio, the only "revolution" with sat radio is there are thousands/millions less listeners and fans. The fake shine of sat radio and it's empty promises is crystal clear.

first of all its not about censorship, it's about bubba promoting his other radio show, and i'm sure it's in his contract NOT to do it, and Bubba knows this, and who is this idiot promoting HD radio. HD radio is a joke, what is so great about it. i'm sure there is still a million commercials during the morning drive unlike SAT radio, and that is the reason why i switched to SAT radio

NO! to "merge" MONOPOLY
NO! to satrad fanboy ignorance
Never listened to bubba. Never cared for bubba.
However, if the censorship carries over to Howard or the non-hits music channels, then there's a major problem.
XM doesn't even dump Opie and Anthony when they slip while they're also being syndicated on FM.
Opie and Anthony are better anyways. Its a shame XM's music channels and receivers all suck.
You people are the biggest bunch of whiners. Get rid of your satellite then, you're obviously not mature enough to understand it.
"HD Interference: Not Just For AM Anymore"
"Radio World Engineering Extra dropped a bomb this month with a very provocative cover story: 'What Are We Doing to Ourselves, Exactly?' Written by Doug Vernier, the man who authored the technical specifications for an ongoing Corporation for Public Broadcasting-sponsored HD Radio interference analysis, the report is the first of its kind to document interference between FM-HD stations around the country. Using anecdotal reportage, some sophisticated contour-mapping, and presumably 'early data' from the CPB study, Vernier's article conclusively proves how stations running in hybrid HD/analog mode can (and do) interfere somewhat significantly with not only themselves, but their neighbors on the FM dial."
http://diymedia.net/archive/1207.htm#122307
"Editorial on the recent approval of HD Radio (IBOC) in the USA"
"... the reason the big boys in the big markets are so pro IBOC is because they like the hash as it wipes out distant signals getting into their market. There is no way to stop skip, but if the IBOC hash wipes the signal out, then the locals will have to listen to their local station. Kind of like legal jamming. Considering that, then even if the public does not buy the radios, keeping the IBOC signal might be worth their while."
http://www.am-dx.com/amiboc.htm
"HD Radio: Will More Awareness Translate To Sales?"
"Unfortunately, Ibiquity does not: Yes, they have gotten many radio stations to make the $100,000 or so investment required to add HD Radio broadcasting, but what the leave out of their PR spin is that MANY of these stations were Public Radio/NPR stations that had their equipment paid for by special funding from Congress. So tell me, senior executives from, say, Sony, Mitsubishi, Best Buy, etc.: How do you feel about Ibiquity''s lobbyists getting US taxpayers to pick up the tab for many of their transmitter sales? Wouldn''t it be great if your lobbyists could get Congress to mandate that US taxpayers be required to buy your products, too? Do you even slightly care? Ibiquity will take their money and run, and HD Radio will join a long list of failed formats, like Dolby FM radio, Elcassete, mini disk (in the US), etc."
"Night of the Bees"
"Radio listeners across America are trying to hide from a monster, but there is no shelter. After spending its adolescence in technical trials during daytime hours, IBOC has now come out at night... For example, in New York City, WOR broadcasts on 710 kilohertz. When it turns on its IBOC equipment, the digital noise it produces can be heard on 690, 700, 720 and 730 kilohertz with a reduced fidelity analog audio signal remaining on 710…"
http://karlzuk.blogspot.com/2007/09/night-of-bees.html
According to a leaked memorandum from ABC/Citadel's executive chief engineer, all AM stations in the company's stable have ceased broadcasting in digital at night, effective immediately. The memorandum does not give specifics, but follow-on reports cite interference between AM stations on adjacent channels as a major factor for the decision. Interestingly, some suggest Citadel executives knew such a problem might be in the offing, but they went ahead and turned on their digital signals at night anyway.
This is a major setback for the adoption of HD Radio, especially on the AM dial, and Citadel is the first large broadcast conglomerate to back away from full deployment of the HD broadcast technology. Although the company's gone out of its way not to characterize its move an indictment of iBiquity's proprietary digital broadcast standard, the problems with AM HD broadcast interference are well-known and -documented.
Apparently, since the FCC's authorization of nighttime AM-HD broadcasts earlier this year, the number of complaints about interference between stations has risen dramatically, and affects all classes of AM stations - from the 50-kilowatt "clear channel" blowtorches to the smallest operations.
Because the interference potential of HD Radio signals (and especially AM-HD signals) is a fundamental flaw of the technology itself, it's hard to see how a "workaround" might be produced to fix this problem, outside of going back to the drawing board and redesigning the entire HD broadcast protocol to not be as bandwidth-hungry as it is. HD-capable AM stations have already squeezed the bandwidth of their analog signals in order to accommodate the HD sidebands, even beyond the point of fundamentally degrading analog audio quality. Since a wholesale redesign of the AM-HD protocol is highly unlikely, perhaps AM stations should consider HD alternatives instead? Unfortunately, the FCC does not seem predisposed to consider this.
As radio's technology of the future, HD could very well be a waste of time: listener knowledge about and adoption of new HD-capable receivers is abysmal (more people listen to Democracy Now! every week than listen to a digital radio broadcast); the price and quality of said receivers is mostly-abysmal; and even broadcasters are coming around enough to openly admit that AM-HD is an afterthought - radio's digital future will almost entirely exist on the FM band. This is a major factor, I believe, as to why the NAB and its member-stations are pushing so hard for the FCC to freely give FM translators to AM stations.
In a nutshell, HD Radio is far from dead, but it would appear that, in some respects, the writing is already on the wall.

Censorship pertains to ideas, not words. The promise of satellite radio is commercial free music, not freedom of speech. Bubba is lucky to have a job. Sirius should put a limit on bubba's vulgar mouth, he doesn't really have anything to say anyway. Opie and Anthony, and Ron and Fez, and Jay Thomas (and Stern) rock.
Bubba is the #2 rated talk show on satrad behind Stern. Let him run his show or fire him.
HD radio. Same old garbage with better audio.
