This morning, a listener of the Opie & Anthony Show called in to the show with the apparent intent to end his life. At one point during the call, the gun he had in his posession went off.Tom from White Plains, who has a long-standing medical condition with his lungs that slows down his ability to breathe over time, called in this morning. Tom, a friend of the Opie & Anthony Show, seemingly was intent on ending his life on the air. He had a variety of weapons available to him which he described on the air, and at one point, one of them was fired during the call.
Opie, Anthony, and Jim managed to convince Tom to not commit suicide and offered to get him some help. They even invited him to the studio the next morning to hang out with the show.
The local authorities were notified and Tom was brought to a hospital shortly afterward the call.

You know they wanted to make jokes but did the right thing for once and should be applauded. I'm not a Bubba fan but he also gets props for his handling of a similar situation. My favorite line was when one of them said something like "We're being nice for the first time in 2 years!".

EX_XMER and others are such morons. Tom has been calling in for over a year, and was on stage at one of the Travelling Virus shows (I think Jones Beach). What these guys did, especially Jimmy, was great and they are really trying to help this guy by using their show to get him some other medical help. O&A don't pay for callers like Howard has had to. What Bubba did was great to, but to say it is a rip off of another person is an absolute joke. I guess every time someone does anything on the radio it should be called hack because all of the bits, jokes, and typical media stuff have already been done within reason.
Even the haters should realize that what happened today was more important than any radio war (which only exists now in the minds of the listeners by the way). This was about saving a life and doing the right thing. I would give Howard, Bubba, or even Mancow credit for doing the same thing.

It's so easy for those of you that don't work in the business to make claims of the caller being planted -- but the truth is, they're typically not planted. You'd be surprised at just how many suicidal people call in to radio stations, prior to attempting suicide. In a lot of ways, DJ's are seen as the last friend of many suicidal people.
And there is nothing more frightening than to be on the air and getting one of these calls. One of my jocks got a call from a potential suicide about 10 years ago... he kept him on the phone (it was all done off air) in an effort to talk him out of doing it. The next day, the police visted the station to talk to my jock... the guy eneded up killing himself. It's a horrible feeling.
Shame on you for mocking these situations as fake... there is a reason most radio stations have the phone number to the suicide prevention hotline posted in the studios.

When I was listening this morning, all I could think about was that the Stern fans were going to claim that O&A were just ripping Howard off. Truth is, Tom is very real and has been calling in to the show for quite some time with updates on his condition. He had already told O&A that he was going to just commit suicide when it got unbearable. I truly applaud O&A for putting the jokes aside to help him. The same compassion that I heard during their 9-11 show was again present this morning, and I actually felt quite a bit of emotion when I heard them trying to dissuade Tom from actually doing it. I also heard Howard's show live when he was talking the jumper out of his suicide attempt many years ago. The only difference is that I don't believe that O&A will feel the need to call a press conference to pat themselves on the back for their actions like an egocentric Stern did years ago. He made that incident all about himself. And that crotchety old Penny Crone was even present back then (working for FOX 5 News in NY) to interview him and inflate his ego even more about what a humanitarian he was.

From what I heard CBS lawyers already said, that Tom can't appear on the CBS side, steve was checking in to the xm side of things. But, he might be kept in the hospital.
