Automakers come out against HD Radio mandate

GM, ToyotaTwo key automakers have come out strongly against proposals calling for an FCC mandate that HD Radios be included within all satellite radios, should the merger between Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. be approved.

General Motors Corporation and Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. jointly filed a letter to the FCC, expressing opposition to the "unprecedented requirement" of the broadcaster-supported HD Radio proposals.

"HD is already penetrating the automotive sector without a mandate. Several manufacturers are either currently offering HD or have announced plans to make HD radio standard or optional in future models," wrote GM and Toyota.

"Nothing in our companies' respective agreements with XM inhibits our ability to offer HD radio."

GM and Toyota pointed out that if "consumers continue to show an interest in HD technology" automakers will "take notice and adjust their strategies" in response.

The auto manufacturers feel that once mandated, "HD would have no incentive to be fully responsive to the demands of the marketplace." Adding that "any mandate will inherently distort the normal incentives to cost reduce and further improve the HD product offering."

GM and Toyota urged the FCC to "not ignore the demonstrated success of a market-based approach."

I couldn't agree more. Let the market decide the need for HD radio.

Call your favorite auto manufacturer and tell them to follow suit.
NO TO HD RADIO MANDATE!
For starters...
Ford - 800.555.5259
Chrysler - 800.999.1009
Honda - 800.822.8987
Nissan - 800.647.7261
Volkswagen - 800.822.8987

In other words....tell the NAB and the state AGs to "F off". The market will determine the successfull placement of HD radio....not the government or any lobbying group.

Say No! to the David K. "Dave" Rehr merge MONOPOLY scheme!

Hea, HD Radio. "That will learn ya."

LOL! I love it!!

Say "NO" to David K. "Rear" Rehr merge HD RADIO MONOPOLY scheme!

If someone wants HD radio, then they can buy one in their after-market radios when it comes time to replace the factory units. Do not force the consumers to get something they may not want.

Really i mean the politicians and the FCC and NAB aren't making good points, just demands. They say what they are set out to do...protect the consumer, keep competition...but they just keep contradicting themselves.

These automakers make a valid point, where is the competition if HD would just piggy back on Sat radio. They are the ones who need to keep the competitive edge. The consumers don;t want that crap. They want to take a short cut to getting the positioning in the market that sirius and xm have been setting up for the last 4 years. Event hough FM is already in every godam car as it is.....

Target has a HD radio marked down from $149 to $104 in the CLEARANCE section at my local mall. An obvious success. LOL

"If someone wants HD radio, then they can buy one in their after-market radios when it comes time to replace the factory units. Do not force the consumers to get something they may not want."

You can say the same shit for Sirius.

tHEY CAN SMELL DOGSHIT, BEFORE THEY STEP IN IT!

"Digital Audio Broadcasting Systems and Their Impact on the Terrestrial Radio Broadcast Service"

15. We will not establish a deadline for radio stations to convert to digital broadcasting. Stations may decide if, and when, they will provide digital service to the public. Several reasons support this decision. First, unlike television licensees, radio stations are under no statutory mandate to convert to a digital format. Second, a hard deadline is unnecessary given that DAB uses an in-band technology that does not require the allocation of additional spectrum. Thus, the spectrum reclamation needs that exist for DTV do not exist here. Moreover, there is no evidence in the record that marketplace forces cannot propel the DAB conversion forward, and effective markets tend to provide better solutions than regulatory schemes.

16. iBiquity argues that in the early stages of the transition, the Commission should favor and protect existing analog signals. It states that this could be accomplished by limiting the power level and bandwidth occupancy of the digital carriers in the hybrid mode. At some point in the future, when the Commission determines there is sufficient market penetration of digital receivers, iBiquity asserts that the public interest will be best served by reversing this presumption to favor digital operations. At that time, broadcasters will no longer need to protect analog operations by limiting the digital signal and stations should have the option to implement all-digital broadcasts. We decline to adopt iBiquity's presumption policy because it is too early in the DAB conversion process for us to consider such a mechanism. We find that such a policy, if adopted now, may have unknown and unintended consequences for a new technology that has yet to be accepted by the public or widely adopted by the broadcast industry.

http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-IMPACT/2007/August/Day-15/i15922.htm

In approving the destructive HD/IBOC, the corrupt FCC indicated that the marketplace would determine the fate of HD Radio. HD Radio is now fucked with the automakers.

From what I've heard HD radio is supposed to be good but eveyrthing I've heard about it that isn't the case.. I live in an area where there isn't any HD (so far as I know).. and I would think the bigger markets is where HD would make sense anyway.. I don't want it built into my satellite radio because I just don't want to be forced to have it.. maybe the NAB and the other watchdog agencies should have told the radio makers to have some of their radios offer HD, and see how they sell.. don't force them to make all of their radios with HD..

Oh Ryan,

Again 1 sided FUD. Why didn't you point out that both GM and Toyota have a large investment in XM? OF course they would rather not see HD Radio ruin their investment, HOWEVER HD Radio INNOVATION has moved past satradio, the satradio industry is in the first stages of complete implosion thanks to poor management, poor business plans,
Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" scheme, and now surprisingly even Ryan Saghir, Managing Editor at Orbitcast, is an evangelist of the satellite radio medium, technology and business model claims on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10:51 AM "So to all the naysayers (*cough* NAB *cough*) who bemoaned that the iPhone doesn't represent a viable alternative to satellite radio: you're wrong. "

It's OVER for satradio, the day (riday, July 11, 2008 at 10:51 AM) Ryan admitted it is the day satradio died.

No HD radio in Satrad receivers?? Jeez, too bad, I was hoping they were going to mandate 8 tracks machines and Victrolas in them next., I'd love to have a big old Victrola in my Toyota right next to my 8 track machine next to my (virgin) HD radio in my Satellite receiver

By the way I didn't know iNiqity had trolls that sent Anonymous Coward posts to Satrad blogs. It's time to upgrade alright, time to ban HD radio to clear our radios of hash and interference.

MORE PROOF OF (H)ardly (D)ifferent Radio’s DISMAL position in the market.
Unfortunately for AC/NAB SHILL amazon.com keeps track of sales by category hourly and it shows only one HD radio in the electronics top 25 while standard radio has 4 radios in the top 25 this is exceeded by Satellite radio which has six radio’s in the top 25 That more than HD and standard radio combined!
The rankings change from time to time but if you look through them you’ll see AC NAB/ SHILL is a DELUSIONAL DOUCHEBAG Satellite radio, ipods and their accessories are vastly more popular in amazon's top 100’s than HDR. Don’t let this shill point to HD ready radios you can track the popularity of the HD head units verses Satellite head units with amazon too.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/226184/ref=pd_ts_e_nav

This is why NAB SHILL is so desperate to spam a satellite blog because satellite radios are far more popular than HDR. But MP3 players and ipods are far and away the top selling consumer electronic device bar none!

TESTICLE RADIO “TAKES IT IN THE REHR!”

Decline in Terrestrial Radio Audience
In an average week, 230 million Americans tune in to traditional radio. A large audience to be sure, but one in sharp decline from just five years ago. During the heady days of radio consolidation during the late 90s, stations increased their spot loads and promotional clutter. Listeners got annoyed, resulting in lower AQH ratings and time listening. During this same period, new on-demand devices, like MP3 players, were introduced and gained popular momentum. According to Billboard Radio Monitor, the number of ears listening [to terrestrial radio] every day has slowly slipped to about what it was in 1994. The audience of 18- to 24-year olds, a demographic particularly beloved by advertisers, has fallen nearly 22% since 1999. The sharp decline in radio advertising revenue reflects this change: In the radio expansion period of 1996-2000, total radio revenue (excluding network radio) grew 12%. Yet from 2000-2004, the increase was a meager .3%.

WSUX HD RADIO !!!

WIRELESS TELEGRAPH OF THE FUTURE, TODAY!!!!!!

Yes you too can be sporting technology that would be the envy of Tesla and Marconi. Are you too incompetent to program your new mp3 player with stuff you want to hear? Then let HDR decide what you want to listen to (incompetents like you don’t deserve better). Do hundreds of channels confuse you? No problem, (H)ardly (D)ifferent radio is just that hardly different, we don’t have the talent to fill the channels we already have much less extra channels.

HDR offers a fish a bicycle and you are welcome to ride along.

HD RADIO …….The smart fish’s bicycle!

**************************************************************************
K RAP….. HD RADIO!!! OUR CALL LETTERS SAY IT ALL IF YOU”RE NOT LISTENING TO KRAP THEN YOU”RE NOT HEARING ALL THAT (H)ardly (D)ifferent Radio HAS TO OFFER!!!

Remember in the old westerns when Indians used smoke signals to communicate? Wasn’t that cool? Well, HD Radio is almost as cool (but not as well know). Let HD Radio take you back in time where your great grand parents pitched woo to the hottest technology of the day. You can relive their misery with a new HD Wireless Telegraph Receiver our radios are designed for horseless carriage and parlor use. Our future 2nd gen power saver chipset will allow for our new line of luggable coal fired HD radios. Yes that’s right clean burning coal our technology takes you back to the good old days.

HD RADIO…… Where’s there’s smoke there’s fire (it’s probably at one of our transmitters.)

Isn't it a pity the old Soviet Union no longer exists? From the perspective of the HD Radio gang, I mean? Wouldn't the Komissars have loved HD?

Isn't the HD gang following the old Command Economy 'business model'? They decide what sort of radio you may own - and arrange things so that the radios you have become useless. In the East Bloc, we knew it as jamming. And that's what HD does - it jams.

The free market rejected HD. A few BigRadio consolidators who don't like competition 'partnered' with defense contractors, NPR, and a docile FCC to inflict a digital 'carny shill' upon Americans - using public airwaves to boot. Nice crowd, eh?

With those business methods, how can you trust their programs?

Originally, digital radio was supposed to be like satellite, on its own band to avoid interfering with AM&FM. But 90s BigRadio consolidators and NPR fellow travellers didn't like that. They insisted upon shoving digital where it didn't belong, smack into AM&FM.

The result? That banshee jamming noise you hear on AM&FM. HD jams adjacent stations and limits your listening choices to a few stations owned by absentee corpseorations and NPR. Wow! Now that's local radio, eh?

As with so many 90s gags, HD was to be a Big Surprise. By 2012, without an HD radio, you were to hear nothing but jamming. Surprise! All your radios are now worthless. Throw them out. Buy costly balky HD Stooge radio. Prepare for monthly fees for formerly free programs.

But many even industry insiders couldn't stand the reek. So HD was slow to move. Insiders also kept it secret, unlike legitimate retailers who can't wait to tell the public about worthy new products. Wonder why?

Now, listeners have heard HD's jamming. They fully realize how HD is ruining AM and FM.

Isn't that why HD is over - all but the shouting? Not to mention, the jamming?

More reposted, previously DEBUNKED fearful and desperate FUD from Anonymous Coward, aka AC LOVES TO SCREAM MY NAME WHEN I'M NOT USING HIS MOUTH FOR OTHER STUFF aka Pocketradio.

Your fear and desperation of HD Radio is getting worse. Face the FACTS Pocketradio your reputation is lower than dirt all over the net.

Everyone who is educated knows:

Pocketradio DEBUNKED

HD Radio broadcasting is the technology that is enabling AM and FM radio stations to broadcast digitally in addition to providing their analog service. With this technology, local radio broadcasters can provide listeners with more audio content through FM multicasting, higher quality sound and new data services, while remaining in their traditional places on the radio dial. HD Radio broadcasts are available today to more than 83% of Americans, subscription-free. As with traditional AM, FM and TV broadcasting, HD Radio programming is free and supported either by commercial advertising or by membership as in public broadcasting. Therefore, the HD Radio system is considered a no-fee alternative to satellite radio.
As of June 2008, more than 1,700 AM and FM stations are broadcasting with HD Radio technology, with more than 700 FM stations offering more than one digital channel per FM frequency, thus doubling or tripling the number of programming channels available to listeners. Most of the stations that have adopted the technology are FMs, while AM stations have been slower to upgrade.

HDR-AM is unpopular for a reason

AM-HD is a horrible feature for people who want to listen to far away AM stations. AM HD creates "white noise" for adjacent frequencies. An equally disturbing problem is that converting a station to AM-HD will actually decrease the distance covered by the radio signal.

Following is from Pocono’s Record article:
"So why did the Pocono’s (and Connecticut, upstate New York and southern New Jersey) lose 770 WABC at night?
Like other AM stations, to make HD work at night, they need to send out a watered down signal.

"To send out a quality signal, you have to limit the bandwidth. We knew were going to eliminate some fringe listeners, but we weren't real sure what it would do until we did it," Phil Boyce, WABC program director said.

Hey isn’t this funny? Look what happens when you use google trends to look up the site that Anonymous Cockgobbler keeps spamming us with. Didn’t that asshole AC claim a huge increase in traffic to his spam link? Further proof that AC is a lying sack of shit

“Your terms - www.hdradio.com - do not have enough search volume to show graphs.”
http://www.google.com/trends?q=www.hdradio.com&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

But if you try www.sirius.com or www.xmradio.com they both come back with results. More proof that people couldn’t care less about (H)ardly (D)ifferent radio no matter how free it is. On the other hand both pay services garner enough attention to generate data.

NAB guy (AC) you say ---------------HOWEVER HD Radio INNOVATION has moved past satradio, the satradio industry is in the first stages of complete implosion thanks to poor management, poor business plans,

how and when did hd radio become innovative???? they couldn't hand out units to people who cared!...if anything im Not so sure terrestrial listeners even talk about their fav. stations HD2 feed or anything HD related! how is a product innovative when there is no SUCCESS in the product and the way HD broadcasts!....how is it ahead of the times when HD radio is soooo flawed!

you are such a tool!
