Bushnell ONIX 400 unboxed!

Oh how I love it when goodies show up at my doorstep. Today a well-fed FedEx man dropped off a new Bushnell ONIX 400 GPS/XM Weather tracker on my doorstep. I had the opportunity to play with ONIX 400 hands on at the beginning of the year, but this is a special joy because now she's ready for prime-time.
Before I run out into the woods for a couple days with only my trusty knife and the Bushnell in hand, let's do an unboxing first... check out an ample number of photos (plus discover who's mystery foot that is) after the jump.

Yes, the "mystery foot" belongs to my son Spencer (who's now 17 months old). He took an immediate liking to the ONIX.

I think this is a pre-retail version, but included in the box is the ONIX 400 unit itself, a power cable, USB cable, and a set of headphones (which look like upgraded versions of the Pioneer Inno headphones... very nice).

That grey thing with a "B" on it is the battery, you can see it flipped over below.

Remember that the device is meant for an outdoors-lifestyle, so the ONIX is designed primarily to be rugged. The entire device has a rubberized coating and that battery serves as a great handhold while you're navigating it.

Booting it up... time to play!

The screen looks pretty sharp. Let us know how it works in the wild.

It should be available literally any day now. Knowing how the retail channel works, I'd take a guess at sometime in October (Bushnell customer service reps September)...
Holy geez, I'm just psyched to see XM Weather in a handheld form. Can't wait to really give it a run for its money...

I love this unit! It makes me actually want to go hiking.
And way to get that kid started on gadgets early.

Soon XM will have a specific channel for geocaching.

He might as well have been born with headphones on... kid loves all the satrad crap I have around my office.
Side note: I'm really having troubles blogging and getting any real-life work done with this Bushnell right next to me.

What are the MSRP and street prices on these things?

BTW.. the headphones that come with it suck. Comparing between the earbuds that came with my Inno vs. the ones that came with the Onix... the Inno ones deliver a MUCH more enjoyable audio experience.
Yes, I got one also... I've posted a couple of quick screenshots over at XM411.

I'm sure that between Ryan and I, we'll have this new device well-covered in coming days and weeks. :)

Unbelievable! They've been saying this was coming for almost a year, and I have found at least two online retailers with posts stating the Onix400 has been discontinued.
I spoke with Bass Pro Shops today, and they advised that although their website shows the Onix400 they are not actually going to carry it because the 200 sold so poorly.
I even spoke with Bushnell twice - including today - and they can't tell me when this thing will actually ship.
Not to mention XM's own site has no info about pricing.
And here you are with one...you're killing me.

Oh it'll definitely be in stores and out there, but I think they were doing some last-minute updates to the software. I'd have to agree with MikeV, the headphones are awful compared to the Inno ones.. but this isn't meant to be a radio, that's just a side benefit of having XM Weather service.
I'll be reviewing this and detailing a nice huge writeup for everyone to pick over shortly.

@iband: Yeah, can you believe it? I'm a multitasking madman!

Sorry about the double post.
I hope the time spent on software tweaks pays off for Bushnell. I have high hopes for this unit to replace a Garmin GPSMap 60cs, but I keep hearing awful reviews on the Bushnell 200 line. In fact, I also spoke with a local REI, and the rep there said they've seen just about every unit sold there returned by unhappy consumers.
I'm not concerned about the headphones since I never seem to use bundled headphones anyway, and I will most likely give this a try if it hits before the Magellan Triton 2000. As it stands - it doesn't seem as though it will.

Hi there-
I was considering buying one of these units for my husband (xmas present).
I've got a quick question about the XM weather subscription.... I've yet to see any screen shots of the $10 per month service. Do you know if they show "projected paths" of storms? Or is it just basic radar???
Living in extremely rural Mississippi, I'd like to be able to see if a tornado, bad storm is actually headed in our direction.
Many thanks for any advice, links, and feedback!
Nan

Hi Ryan,
I am very interested and excited about the onix 400. Hopefully we can read your hands-on review pretty soon? do you know of any similar prodcut in the works but with sirius service instead on XM?
thanks in advance

How is the review coming? I have had the Onix 400 on order since June, and am expecting it soon. I am relly looking forward to your review of the weather service, and the satellite imagery. Recent reports are that XM does not know how to activate the NavWeather service, but that Bushnell customer service will handle the activation if called.

Perhaps Bushnell told him to take his time?
I called them again today to confirm a ship date, and now they are telling me they cannot say that it will even be available in November.
I've found two online retailers stating that Bushnell expects to ship by Jan '08.
If it drops early next month they might still get my business. Later than that and I'll just buy another brand.

I just spoke with a customer rep from Bushnell. They said that they began shipment of the Onix 400 last week around the 9th or 10th, and that the best place to get one of these units is from your nearest Cabela's retail store. From the conversation I had with him, it sounded like they had plenty and it looked like most backordered products would be shipped very soon. I did hear one thing that I was hoping not to hear though, it is coming from their 'overseas manufacturer'. Too bad it's not made in the US.

They are available at REI.com as of last night. I called them to verify stock. They are not available in REI stores, but their DC has 29 in stock. I ordered one for delivery on Wednesday.
The reviews of the previous two units were downright horrible, but I'm hoping they learned from their past mistakes. The Onix 400 seems to have everything I want, and I'm really only concerned about the quality of their maps.
Here's to wishing Wednesday will be a good day as I really want to ditch my Garmin.

After receving my Onix 400 last week, and suppling XM with all vital info, I am not getting any weather data, after 3 calls to each to XM and Bushnell telling me the problem would be fixed, still no data, after the forth call to XM someone told me they do not have the program yet to send the data, XM took my phone number and said they would get back with me when the service is available. 10-17-07

I bought this for my fiance for his birthday and received the unit on 10/15/07-- Tried to set up XM Weather--- I was told garmin who made the unit for bushnell was not suppose to release the units, and they don't think they'll have the software up and running until Jan 08!!!
I am disgusted!!!!

Tiffany,
I've had two units, and both of them were able to receive the XM WX just fine. Yes, you do have to call XM, but for both units they were able to get me up and running within 30 minutes.
Suggestion: call them for a "SkyWatch & XM WX" reset then turn your 400 to the XM WX option and get a clear shot at the sky. What I am finding is that the Onix needs three bars of reception when it first activates the weather feature....but it DOES work.
Those who keep complaining of XM not knowing about the weather feature must be getting clueless employees because I've had no trouble with those to whom I've spoken.

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE ACTIVATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ONIX 400 AFTER YOU CALL XM?
Posted by: SUMMER | February 29, 2008 3:23 PM
Summer,
After XM confirms your XM ID and validates your service they will send an upload to the satellite. After you disconnect with them you should have your unit turned on (XM reception mode ON) and with a clear view of the sky - all bars showing is preferable. Place the screen on the XM WX mode and leave it there for about 15 minutes.
Everything should work at that point. FYI - this will typically NOT work indoors even if you are receiving a signal.
