Casey Kasem's American Top 40 comes to XM
XM Satellite Radio is celebrating Casey Kasem's American Top 40 coming to The 70s on 7 and The 80s on 8 with a marathon weekend.
On July 4, 1970, Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 debuted, and the Detroit native quickly became synonymous with the countdown format. The format, reminiscent of the immensely popular Your Hit Parade program in the 1930s and 1940s, allowed Kasem to blend human-interest stories with the top songs of the day. His final show aired on August 6, 1988 due to contract conflicts with ABC, after which it was taken over by Shadoe Stevens. Casey eventually reclaimed the AT40 moniker in 1998, until the torch was handed over to Ryan Seacrest in 2004.
Tune in to XM 7 and XM 8, Friday through Sunday, August 4th through August 6th, to hear the all-Casey Kasem countdown marathon all weekend long.

Lee Abrams does it again. If he wasn't so stuck in the past I would consider this an inventive move. After making Bob Dylan the star of XM music and bringing Willie Nelson on board its safe to say Lee Abrams is stuck in the past. He often quotes "the good ole days" in his blog and that seems to effect XM. Only now its just considered old. Abrams is often touted as a genius but recently my opinion makes him more into a has been who's hurting XM and keeping them out of the mainstream.

And Sirius hiring Mesozoic-era jock Cousin Brucie is somehow 'innovative'?

Pete,
In true messageboard fashion you pick a sentence out of a paragraph and attack it with incorrect logic and limited insight.
Cousin Brucie is an oldies Dj brought in to host a few oldies programs.
Lee Abrams is a 70's rock radio consultant brought in to change the face of radio. He has basically made it into a network catering to people who used to listen to radio in the 70's. On his blog he commonly refers to being new and innovative like The Beatles, 40's + 50's radio etc.
XM music stations sound like an abandoned building with 69 Ipods on shuffle.
Sirius sounds like 62 well programmed stations who are being scrambled by the Russian.
I'll take Sirius and a modern mentality over this back to the future mentality from Abrams.

When I signed up for XM several years ago, American Top 40 with Casey Kasem was on the air. but the listeners didn't want to hear old countdown shows and XM dumped it.
I liked having the old countdowns and was unhappy they deep-sixed them. I am happy they are brining it back.

I thought Casey died last fall. Shows you what I know.
PS... Lee is the best thing that ever happen to the dOOmed XM.

'Limited insight', indeed. I own the service, and I listen quite a bit - that's all the 'insight' into XM's programming I need, thanks.
'Top 40' isn't getting its own *channel* - it's a one-shot program that will feature classic 70's & 80's shows on those respective channels...
How exactly is this being 'stuck in the past'? The show *is* on a couple of channels that deal with *old music*. Moreso, 'Top 40' adds a bit more flavor to the usual fare, instead of just being 'souless' iPod-shuffle-type stations, as you claim. Not that I was a big fan of Kasem's show, but to each his own. I'm not one to b*tch about every little thing I don't like about my service - there's enough to go around for every type of listener.
But personally, I could give two sh*ts who's talking in between the songs, whether it's Cousin Brucie, Barry Williams or (LOL) 'Wavy Gravy'...
I happen to like XM because they *don't* feel the need to fill the empty spaces with a whole bunch of bullsh*tting from has-been jocks still trying to live out the glory days. The Sirius philosophy happens to be about big names & personalities - and that's fine, if you'd prefer chatter instead of 4-5 extra songs per hour that could be played in its place.
And I still don't quite get Sirius listeners commenting on XM programming... Guess what, you don't have to listen to it - move on.

its old recordings. Casey Kasem will not be there.

This isn't as dumb a move as it seems. According to the figures here the 70's and 80's channels have quite a few listeners.
XM's The '70s - 2.1 million listeners
XM's The '80s - 1.9 million listeners

Ya Lee is brilliant. Keep focusing on the 60's and 70's. So XM can have the most popular 70's station in the whole world.
Meanwhile sirius will have to scrape by with having more popular stations of music produced in the last decade. The fact that Sirius is destroying XM with limited OEM deal probably has nothing to do with that.

I know personally of two subscribers who signed up specifically because they heard these two stations on my service and they fell in love with them.
Nothing wrong with playing to your strengths.

Could anyone here, please!!, tell me if there's Casey Kasem AT 40 CDs on sale with all the AT 40 Countdowns or at least the Annual ones? I don't mean the CDs that appear on www.cduniverse.com or on www.bestbuy.com , but the original ones from Casey's A.T 40's every week from the 70's til the 80's... or just the AT Hot 100's.
Thanks a lot to the owner of this wonderful site for giving me this chance and to the ones who could help me to get these CDs I mentioned. It'd be like living again those wonderful days of my life
Love, Pedro Manuel
