Monday, May 12, 2008 at 10:58 AM
2008 Subaru ImprezaSubaru will be offering Sirius Satellite Radio exclusively in the majority of its vehicles sold in Canada, starting in June. It's a clear sign that the battle for exclusive OEM deals is as hot as ever with our neighbors up North.

The exclusive deal is for the Subaru Legacy, Outback and Impreza (pictured) models. Additional Sirius-exclusive Subaru models will be announced in the coming months.

Impreza interior"Sirius is the leading satellite radio brand in Canada and we are very pleased to expand our satellite radio offering on our volume vehicles," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president, chairman and chief executive officer of Subaru Canada, "We are excited about providing even more Subaru drivers with an enhanced in-vehicle entertainment experience from Sirius Satellite Radio."

XM Canada wants nothing to do with a merger... yet

Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 8:09 AM
Ohh Canada!!
While the U.S. versions of Sirius and XM are happily skipping along holding hands, our neighbors up North may not be sharing the same sentiment.

Following the Justice Department's greenlight of the Sirius-XM merger, XM Canada announced that they'll have no part of such shenanigans - at this time.

"We have a strong business model in Canada and are committed to an aggressive growth strategy aimed at increasing our subscriber base and delivering outstanding programming right across the country," said Michael Moskowitz, the newly minted President and CEO of XM Canada.

"We are excited about XM Canada's prospects as 60 per cent of all new vehicles made by Canada's automotive manufacturers are equipped with XM satellite radios, we now have exclusive NHL satellite radio broadcast rights and we now have 400,000 subscribers," added Moskowitz. "We will diligently review any opportunity that arises from this decision and evaluate the impact on our economic positioning and the benefit derived for our customers and shareholders."

So while some analysts opine on the prospects of a reverse takeover - where XM Canada would issue shares to buy Sirius Canada - this statement by Moskowitz clearly indicates that's not in the cards. Yet.

Sirius Canada surpases 500,000 subscribers

Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 10:15 AM

Sirius CanadaSirius Canada has surpassed more than 500,000 paying subscribers, adding more than 200,000 since February. The company was the first to surpass the key 500,000 subscriber milestone in the 22 months since the category was first introduced.

Sirius Canada captured 82% of retail sales year-to-date according to figures released by The NPD Group. During the Father’s Day buying period Sirius bagged an incredible 88% market share of satellite radios sold.

The company’s automotive partners also, by their claim, make up nearly 60% of vehicle sales in Canada and since January 2007 have built more than 100,000 vehicles with factory-installed Sirius.

Sirius Canada and Pana-Pacific extend partnership

Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at 1:45 PM

Them thar's a Peterbilt!Sirius Canada and Pana-Pacific have extended their relationship to distribute Sirius products exclusively to truck dealerships and outlets throughout Canada. Pana-Pacific and Sirius Canada had a previous distribution agreement, but now it looks to have gone exclusive.

Pana-Pacific, a division of the The Brix Group, lays claim to being North America's largest supplier of audio and electronics equipment to the trucking industry

Another interesting claim, which comes from Pana-Pacific's President John Trenberth, is that Sirius holds over a 90% marketshare among truckers in Canada:

"With more than 90 per cent market share to-date, Sirius has been the number one choice for satellite radio among truckers in Canada," said Trenberth in a statement. "Feedback from our retail partners has been that Canadian drivers prefer Sirius on account of its superior signal coverage and programming lineup."

Statements like that must really torque XM Canada's jaw. Remember, they're not so friendly with each other up north.

Thanks Tim!
