CRTC amends XM Canada license

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at 9:03 AM
Not really big news here, but the CRTC has amended XM Canada's license. The initial programming lineup in the CRTC's conditions of license had 3 channels specified, and now it's been upped to the 4 channels that XM Canada is currently carrying. Could this be a legal step towards more channels being offered in Canada?

XM Canada to launch new channels?

XM Canada

There's some speculation over at Digital Home Canada that this may be the case. With the announcement of the Oprah and Friends channel to be broadcast in XM Canada as well. This has raised a few eyebrows because XM Canada will need to comply to the CRTC's regulations by either dropping a channel to make room for Oprah, or by adding additional Canadian content to the mix.

The obvious choice would be to add more Canadian content. Reason being that XM Canada has an obvious disadvantage by carrying only 80 channels versus SIRIUS Canada's 100 channels. So can we expect 2 more Canadian channels and 18 more US channels in Canada soon? Time will only tell.

Thanks tim!
