CES 2010 Retrospective: Maybe I was too harsh on Sirius XM

Sirius XM at CES 2010CES 2010 is now over and I'm still working through the pile of stuff I came home with (there's a few more posts in the queue, so stay tuned), but I wanted to take this opportunity to do a little reflecting on Sirius XM's presence at the show.

I think I may have been too critical on the company. Allow me to explain.

The Sonos S5 absolutely rocks

Sonos S5
I've been watching Sonos for a while now because they've really taken the market of whole home audio by storm. Their latest release, the Sonos S5 (which hit the market this past fall) absolutely brings it to the next level.

At CES 2010, I had a private meeting with the folks at Sonos and learned a lot about the Sonos S5. The verdict: it absolutely rocks.

Slacker Radio upgraded: Expands station caching and adds Palm webOS

Slacker on Palm Pre
Slacker Radio has removed the exclusivity of caching stations only on the BlackBerry and opened up the caching capabilities to the rest of its mobile platforms (like the iPhone/iTouch and Android). In addition, they've also made Slacker Radio available on the Palm webOS platform so that Palm Pre and Palm Pixi users can also enjoy Slacker's personal radio.

In other words: in the span of just one-year, Slacker has opened up its platform to essentially all major smartphones.

One of the interesting emerging trends at CES 2010 is the new approaches to in-vehicle interfaces, and the new Kia UVO powered by Microsoft Auto is illustrative of this movement.

Sirius XM's showcase at CES 2010

Sirius XM at CES 2010For anyone following Orbitcast on Twitter, you've already read my remarks that there is virtually no presence of Sirius XM Radio Inc. at the Consumer Electronics Show this year.

It's disappointing, to say the least, especially since this is the second year in a row that Sirius XM's showing has been minimized.

It's even more disappointing because this year didn't even have external signage like last year, or even a more intimate showcase (this year, the Bellagio presence has been pared down to private meeting space with partners).

But it's not all doom-and-gloom, there definitely was a good display at the Audiovox booth. And I think Sirius XM's presence (or lack thereof) can actually be logically justified.

Up close with the XMP3i

The new XMP3i is the only "new" radio being introduced by Sirius XM this year, so we got up close and personal with it.

So what's the difference with the XMP3? Not much except the new PowerConnect FM transmitter.

CES 2010: Audiovox unveils new XMP3i portable satellite radio

XMp3The new XMP3i isn't really that new more upgraded from the XMP3 than anything else. But the "i" designation will make it a better experience, and an overall better radio, especially for novice users.

The XMP3i accomplishes all this because it now supports the latest generation FM transmitter from Sirius XM Radio Inc. - the PowerConnect FM transmitter.

Garmin's new Zumo 665 packs quite a punch for a GPS

Garmin Zumo 665Garmin has taken the wraps off its latest product line (some info was actually leaked out a couple days ago) at CES, and included in its new offering is the Garmin Zumo 665 GPS for motorcycles.

Riders don't really get too many options available to them in terms of satellite radio, but with the Garmin zumo 665 Portable GPS Navigator, they're getting everything that XM has to offer. And I mean, everything.
