OMG This is AWESOME!!! I want one of these bad. IMHO this is a better solution than the XM Mini Tunner because you still get a full featured unit to use outside of the car. I wonder if you will be able to use the PNP features like Replay and Song Seek if so this is 200% better than the XM Mini Tunner.

Wait, you use your plug and play like a tuner for another headunit? So now I'm buying two things... ya, that is better than the XM Mini-tuner. Basically, $49 and it doesn't include the tuner, that's what I'm reading.

Oh ya, THEN I still have to buy a Sirius Connect bus translator! So let's see here:
XM Ready Head Unit ($200)
XM Mini Tuner ($30)
- OR -
SIRI Ready Head Unit ($200)
SIRI Connect for Head Unit ($50)
SIRI Universal Connector ($50)
... and I STILL don't have a SIRI tuner yet??

Listening to your preferred choice of Satellite Radio Programming... Priceless.

Think it through.....
Sirius Connect:
1. allows full control of a PNP with the PNP's features from a head unit
2. Same PNP can be used as a PNP anywhere (doesn't need special connector)any auto, any home stereo, and universal Sirius boom boxes and accessories.
3. Not all brands will need a translator.
Mini-tuner:
1. only plugs into mini-tuner dock that costs $$
2. Almost nothing has the slot built in today
3. Cannot be used with any car stereo, home stereo, etc. Only very few that are enabled.
While it's very cool and $30 sounds attractive, it fits almost nothing and requires a separate dock on others, while does not have ANY connectivity option to almost all stereos currently in peoples homes, cars, etc...

So I wonder if Sirius is trying to replace the Connect models, which were total GARBAGE!

XZI is right....The dock isn't a tuner like the XM mini tuner. After buying everything you would need, you would be spending more than you would be for the same functionality on XM. This thing just docks and outputs.
This is just the long way around the XM mini tuner.

i think you meant "200% more expensive than the xm mini tuner".

Another thought..... You bring up a good point but what are you going to listen to Sirius with if you dont have a tuner in your list?
Posted by: ahigee ? | January 15, 2007 7:48 PM
I think everyone is missing the point of this! This would be an middle option for those people that wanted to buy a new headunit anyway or "OEM headunits" (yes, read the post) and would like to have Sirius, with FULL tuner functionality (such as Replay and Song/Artist save), AND BEST OF ALL...NO WIRELESS FM. This is better than any of the other items out there already.
Own a Sirius tuner and want Sirius in your new car? Buy this $50 unit with a ?$50? (no price mentioned yet) interface adapter and you now have Sirius in your Car, without having to buy a new headunit. $100 doesn't seem that bad to have the Full functionality of a Sirius Tuner and direct connect to the radio for best quality sound, and be able to control it through my OEM Radio! Actually it sounds damn great!

XZI and ahigee, you still need the tuner box that the mini tuner will dock into to work with each manufacturers protocol. XM has not released an MSRP on that dock yet.
for XM you will need...
XMready headunit $200
XM tunerbox $n/A
XM mini tuner $30
you are also ignoring the fact that the sirius plug and play radio that you will be using in the direct connect application will have way more features than the standard direct connect tuners. ie. replay, game zone, etc.
this is not Sirius' answer to XM's mini tuner. This is just a great way to keep your favorite plug and plays functionality and use your radios controls to operate it. it will also solve the wireless fmmod issue in some applications.
do you 2 have any idea what you are talking about? you 2 should seriously do more research before posting here in the future. you both look like complete idiots everytime you chime in. you guys are way over your heads here. move along now...
Mike, an issue with the direct tuners for Sony only and you have the balls to make a comment? keep talking smack, the truth is Sirius has been outselling XM for over a year now. that trend will continue!

ahigee, I guess I shouldn't have copied what xzi wrote without proofing it. :)

Don't let little things like facts get in your way, ahigee, greg, Mike. The fact is that almost nothing connects to the mini-tuner. While a slot in the face of all equipment would be perfect, no one but portable GPS and a few low-volume players is doing it. A dock needs to be added and almost everything on the market, in peoples homes now and in their cars - is not compatible. So the PNP connect is the best universal solution because it will work with any new Sirius PNP in any situation either with the connect dock, a universal home dock or a universal car dock. Same cannot be said for Mini-tuner, get it?
Regards Sirius Connect - one box with a CD changer/Ipod pass through (Sirius) vs. two without (XM)was always a better solution.
On both - translators are a reality until each 12v head unit manufacturer adds a direct connection to Sirius and/or XM. Some already have. It's great to see both companies coming out with new solutions and advanced products. Hope they both succeed wildly. I love what I get to listen to in my car these days. Five years ago it just sucked for all of us. Go Sirius and XM.

From what I understand:
The Good: Universal dock, so you can interchange Sirius PNP units and control through the HU
The Bad: While you can control through the HU, you still have a dock and PNP sitting on your dash -- at that point, who cares if you can control it through your HU. If you mount the cradle out of site (in the trunk for example), then there is some benefit -- XM had something like this for the SkyFi a few years ago. If you don't plan on changing units often, I don't see why you would get this item.

Let's not forget that with the XM Mini Tuner you still need an antenna to hook up to it somehow. So even if head units start coming out with the slot on the front - which takes up a LOT of room on the face of the head unit - you will need to have an antenna hooked up somehow. Now, not only will the manufacturers need to give up premium real estate on the front of the HU, but the will need to add antenna plug and functionality to the back and insides of the unit. The price is going to go up because of this.
With the Sirius unit you can place the dock and unit in the glove box, a pocket somewhere, down near the parking brake, the pocket in the door, anywhere you want, and not have to change the functionality of the HU at all. Any HU made today will work with this unit. AND some of the OEM HU will work as well.
Can the Mini Tuner work with OEM? Nope.

I was referring to XM's new lineup of XM Mini-tuner HUs... the "dock" everyone is reffering to for home use is included in the $79 package for those that don't already have a CNP on their home receivers.
The point is, MT and this device are not the same idea. MT is a new idea, and this is just a way to use a PNP as your "tuner" in your car--for a big price none-the-less if you don't already have a tuner. Weird niche market if you ask me.

What is Sirius doing to help out customers who have the new GM LAN XM Ready radios (like the 2007 Tahoe) and want to convert to Sirius. The current GM Sirius Connect will not work on these models. Does this new unit help at all? Thanks.

Matt, Yes!

Any updates? It hasn't come out yet and I've installed a new Sirius-Ready Alpine 9885 deck, the Alpine KCA-SC100 SiriusConnect interface adapter, and now I'm just waiting for the release of the SC-VDOC1 vehicle dock to complete the install. Any updates on its release? I'm getting inpatient. :-(

Yes, I have done the same with the exact deck. I want an update toooooo!

Who would want this thing?
I've spent a few hours today researching a new HU to replace my factory-installed cassette (YIKES!). DVD, Nav & near universal playback of all formats of music & video are my goals...
I've narrowed my search down to a unit from Eclipse, Pioneer, & Alpine.
Almost forgot - I purchased a lifetime subscription to Sirius yesterday (will this really be the last time they offer that?) and my Stiletto 2 is being shipped as we speak. I do a lot of travelling in my job, a lot in my own car, and a lot in rental cars - so I see my Stiletto 2 almost as a portable satelite radio DVR; I guess you should say DSRR to be more accurate. The SCVDOC1 really is a cool concept: while in my personal vehicle, I can hook up the Stiletto 2 and access all the recorded programming from the touch-screen of my soon-to-be-acquired HU.
Here's the bad news: it appears that there are problems with the SCVDOC1. Sirius is not selling it, and doesn't know when it will be available - even though it's listed on their website (search for SCVDOC1 in the upper-right search field on sirius.com). Initially I was just curious how well it worked with each of my HU prospects - but after insisting for specific information from the technical support guy, he clearly fessed-up and admitted that the cable is having problems, and he's not supposed to talk about it to anybody. Hopefully they get the issues ironed-out. Since the cable just passes data, my fear is that the specs given to OEM HU manufacturers had some sort of error - how do you issue a patch, when the systems are all different? If, however, the problem is on the Sirius radio side, then you would need to develope a patch for each model... The problem could be just in faulty manufacturing, or design - maybe something like the locking device is breaking - we'll just have to wait and see.

I have a SCVDOC1 in hand from TSS-Radio.com. I have yet to install it though. It works with any Sirius Translator such as the Kenwood KCASR50.
I'm going to try to get it installed in the next few days to try it with my Kenwood touchscreen and my Stiletto 2. I have a Kenwood DDX-6019.
