Satellite Radio DiscountSirius XM Radio Inc. has recently launched two satellite radio discount promotions for new subscribers - and from what Orbitcast can tell - has quietly retired its other rebate programs.

The two discount programs involve getting up to $100 in a Sirius XM Rewards pre-paid Visa card, or subscribing to either Sirius or XM for $4.99/month for the first 6-months.

Both discounts end on 12/31/2009, so if you're looking to save for the holiday season, this might a great opportunity. But, as always, there's some restrictions.

Free Satellite RadioWell... free for 30-days at least. But it's definitely a taste at one of the longer free satellite radio trial periods yet.

We all know that trial drives purchase - forget all the celebrities and hype: hearing is truly believing - and I've always felt that the 3-day trial was never enough.

So now Sirius XM are giving away free satellite radio for 30 days of the premium online subscription in a "Hear. Now" promotion.

Black Friday Watch: Sirius Starmate 4 at Sears

Black Friday special at Sears
Is it that time already? A week before Halloween, and the Black Friday specials are already starting to stream in.

This one comes from Sears, where the Sirius Starmate 4 can be found for $89.99 after a $20 mail-in rebate. It's cheap, but not earth-shatteringly cheap (you can get it for 10-bucks more without the MIR elsewhere), and why bother when there's the newer/cooler Sirius Starmate 5 to contend with?

Apple to unveil new faster 3G iPhone next year

Apple iPhone
Oh we've all known that Apple will eventually come out with a 3G iPhone, but when AT&T's Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson says, "You'll have it next year," we're all going to listen.

Stephenson doesn't give an indication as to how much it'll cost, that's up to Apple CEO Steve Jobs who "will dictate what the price of the phone is."

Jobs plans to sell 10 million iPhones worldwide in 2008, and so far Apple had sold a "mere" 1.4 million handsets through the end of September. Even with 10 million iPhones in everyone's pockets, that would give Cupertino only 1% of the mobile-phone market.

Of course this is all part of Apple's grand plan.

Introducing a 3G iPhone will still allow for the slower EDGE iPhone to penetrate the market - just at a lower price (and subsequently a faster pace). The 3G iPhone will likely also pack more features, which will make it the must-have mobile phone/music player once again.

And who wants to make bets that a "Mobile iTunes" will be part of the package? At 3G speeds, and unlimited bandwidth packages, streaming music (and talk, and sports) on your iPhone will be commonplace.

Long live planned obsolescence.
