Whatever the decision the CRTC makes today, it’ll be likely to be appealed regardless of who wins. Any one of the 3 groups that are bidding for the Canadian broadcasting rights, or one of the Canadian cultural organizations, will probably going to bitch and moan about the decision. Ian Morrison, spokesman for Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, says the decision will probably end up before the federal cabinet or Federal Court. The Broadcasting Act offers unhappy applicants either route.
The topic of Canadian content appears to be the big issue, but it’s probably the current conventional broadcasters who are going to make a big stink. Only time will tell I guess.
