XM Radio Set to Turn Profit - Subscriber base grows as rival does too.

XM Radio Set to Turn Profit - Subscriber base grows as rival does too.

XM Satellite Radio will turn a profit next year, says the company’s chairman.

Gary Parson, XM chairman, said during a visit to Detroit that the company’s start-up plan, which included provisions for heavy losses, is unfolding as planned. Thus XM is on course to turn a profit next year and sign up as many as 20 million subscribers by the end of the decade and 40 million by 2015.

XM now has more than 4 million subscribers under contract and should have 5.5 million on board by the by the end of the year, Parsons added. “Every million subscribers adds about $100 million to our cash flow,” added Parsons after a speech to Detroit ’s Automotive Press Association.

Parsons added XM’s strong cash flow also is making it easier to cover the startup costs that are inherent in acquiring new subscribers and launching the new service.

XM also now reviewing the possibility of offering service in Canada

Wow was going to comment on DS on RS but after Plowboy's latest post of his delusions of grandeur we see just how much a poor, risky investment choice of satradio has brought on each Ployboy post here at orbitcast with each one being more incoherent and more confused than the last.

What does Plowboy's opinion of Gary Parson's performance have to do with Donna Summers, Richard Simmons and Sirius?

See.. the NAB has been losing ground and making up BS since 1992!
So transparent, so childlike.

F.C.C. Plan For Radio By Satellite
E-MAIL

By EDMUND L. ANDREWS,
Published: October 8, 1992

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday will propose assigning a block of frequencies for satellites to broadcast compact-disk-quality digital sound to homes and cars.

Digital satellite radio is still little more than a gleam in the eyes of entrepreneurs, but the technology is available and proponents say it offers numerous benefits to listeners. For one thing, they say, digital transmission produces sound that is free of static and clearer than that of AM or FM stations. Beyond that, satellite broadcasting reaches every part of the country, allowing people to tune in even if they are nowhere near a city.

But listeners will first have to buy entirely new radios, which do not yet exist. And the market for the new services remains unclear. So it is not certain when, or if, satellite radio stations will go on the air. Broadcasters' Opposition

Amid great expectations nearly a decade ago, the F.C.C. assigned frequencies for broadcasting television directly from satellites. But that business has yet to materialize, partly because of the rise of cable television.

Local radio broadcasters are sure to fight the new proposal, because they have long viewed satellite radio as a big threat to their business. Local broadcasters are working on digital technologies of their own, but they are still torn among themselves over the best way to proceed.

Proponents of the new services said the F.C.C.'s decision on Thursday would be an important step forward. "What we've got here is the beginning of a new consumer electronics market segment," said Martin Rothblatt, founder and chairman of Satellite CD Radio Inc., a start-up company in Washington that asked for the new frequencies in 1989. Provoking a Furor

At this point, Satellite CD Radio employs only eight people and has been largely preoccupied with clearing regulatory hurdles and developing its business plan. Despite its bug-sized stature in the radio industry, however, the company provoked a furor among owners of both large and small radio stations when it first presented its proposal to the F.C.C.

"The idea of flooding the country with 30 or 40 satellite radio signals would undermine the ability of local broadcasters to compete," said Jeff Baumann, general counsel of the National Association of Broadcasters. "It would undermine their ability to attract listeners, sell advertising and maintain their viability."

No other company besides Satellite CD Radio is currently proposing a satellite radio service, but others are likely to do so once the Federal Government actually begins handing out licenses. Meanwhile, a growing number of cable television systems are transmitting digital radio over their networks to subscribers for several dollars a month.

In the last two years, satellite digital radio has provoked anxious hand-wringing at broadcasting conventions and the industry has vowed to block the idea at every turn.

Radio broadcasters are particularly fearful because their business has been battered by growing competition for advertising from cable television and other new media. In addition, they have been hurt by increased competition among themselves, because the F.C.C. has authorized more than 1,000 new radio stations since the early 1980's. Thus, the prospect of even more radio channels is anathema to many.

Mr. Rothblatt said this fear was misplaced, because his company wanted to generate revenues from subscribers rather than from advertising. As envisioned, the company would transmit 30 channels of commercial-free music, from classic to country, and subscribers would have to use a decoder on their radios to unscramble the signals. The company hopes to charge $5 to $10 a month for the service.

Several broadcasters are working on digital systems that would broadcast from ordinary radio towers on the ground and would not blanket the nation. The most advanced of these systems is one developed by the Gannett Company and CBS Inc., which enables a station to transmit programs simultaneously in both digital and the conventional analog forms.

But while the system appears to work for FM stations, many experts doubt whether it will work on the AM band. Owners of AM stations say they refuse to be left out of another technical advance and will oppose such a system if it does not work for them. First Step for Rules

" In the last two years, satellite digital radio has provoked anxious hand-wringing at broadcasting conventions and the industry has vowed to block the idea at every turn. "

Great post Plow... I hope the FCC sees this one!

Dear Satradders,

I'm so very sorry..... I'm very disappointed in my lying ass Son. I raised him better than this! If there is something positive here, it's that Kevin hates the NAB as much as you all do. He often uses the word "Ass Clowns" to describe them, when he comes to visit. The merger was approved Thursday and XM-Sirius was advised Friday afternoon...just an FYI.

I would share more, but I have to run as dinner is almost done.

Best Wishes,

Kevin's Mom

FCC Chairman says merger decision in first quarter

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said recently that the Commission expects to complete its review of the merger between Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. by March.

"If I had to guess, I would guess the commission will be trying to address it in the first quarter of this year," said Martin.

Back in September, the FCC Chairman had said that he was targeting for the Sirius-XM merger review process to conclude in the fourth quarter of last year.

Martin also conceded that the unofficial 180-day shot clock for considering the merger had concluded in December. In fact, Martin said the FCC has not yet completed its analysis and that as recently as a few days ago the Commission was meeting with Sirius and XM over follow-up questions about some of its data.

Kevin Martin also said that it was customary for the FCC to wait for the DOJ before weighing in on a merger and didn't know when the Justice Department would be coming out with its decision. He added that the FCC would not necessarily hold off once the DOJ has completed its review

Mrs Martin,

Please wash your son's mouth out with soap and give him an enima in his Rehr like you did when he was just a little son of satan. He truly is an ass and has sold his soul and he is one ugly bastard if I can so respectfully say.

Sorry Mom.

Please post this where ever you can
These are the jerks supporting NAB. They want SATRAD to pay royalty but NOT the NAB.

I love you my Queen.... come back to your Plowboy for that "Disco Sweat" !

You have to forgive AC (6/30 9:55) his PR shill roots are in testicle radio that’s why he says the same boring shit all the time. Remember testicle radio’s FREE FM days? All that catch phrase did was make people realize that chicken bones and crab shells are free too and that free in radio terms = WORTHLESS. The same goes for his insults. Testicle radio has insulted their listener’s intelligence for decades by lowering the quality of on air talent while increasing the length of commercial breaks. AC and his NAB masters are pissed and scared that their former “ignorant” listeners prefer ipods, SatRad or the noise of a rolled down car window to testicular radio’s bland same old, commercial, commercial, same old, commercial, commercial, worthless content!

Just remember AC is here on a Satellite blog because he has no audience at any of the (H)ardly (D)ifferent radio public relation website he keeps spamming us with. It’s sad that AC/NAB would subject themselves to the negative attention they are sure to receive here but I guess like an abused woman, any attention is better than none. AC’s just lashing out in desperation, HD wireless telegraph is a hard sell to people that are willing to pay not to hear it.

Ah yet more excuses for being a blind ignorant satradio fanboy... Oh thats original RADIO I"D PAY TO AVOID, desperately try to associate someone with a smarter opinion than your own with the dark, evil, scary NAB...

RADIO I"D PAY TO AVOID = Pocketradio. Ignorance to play games while desperate to avoid the truth and the facts. Also RADIO I"D PAY TO AVOID you and not a "us" you are you only, and your DEBUNKED yet again.

NO! to Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" MONOPOLY scheme.

W S U X! ………………….HD RADIO!!!

Back to an extended set of commercial breaks after these words from our sponsors:

Are you easily confused? Are you tired of overpowering signals bringing in clear reception? Does listening to a format you can set your watch by appeal to you? Are you a poor ignorant hillbilly with little disposable income? All of these questions and more are answered by HDR.

Easily confused: No problem, HD stands for Hardly Different. HD radio only offer three times more the homogenized auditory nightmare as standard radio and we guarantee it will all sound the same (no confusion!). If you’re a fan of commercials (and who isn’t?) now you’ll get 3x more FREE! (w/ purchase of radio)

Overpowering signals: NO problem here, our digital signal is only licensed to transmit at 1% of our analog signal. If you’re getting us in HD you must be close to our transmitter so stop in and say Hi! (NO…..really, we can see you!)

Anyone who listens to AM/FM radio knows the atomic clock accuracy we use to time our commercials, music and talk. It allows for tighter segues “up next we’ll hear from the 7:45 band followed by the 7:48 band closing that music set”.

Ignorant Indigent Hillbilly: We know FREE is all you can afford so we’re offering 3x’s the FREE for FREE (w/ purchase of radio)! It has come to our attention that 99% of our radios are only available on the “Magic typing box” better known as the Internet or from electronics liquidators with that said you’ll be happy to hear that due to dismal sales these units will soon be available at a LOCAL DUMPSTER near you!

HD Radio…… Answering The Question Nobody Asked!!!

WSUX HD RADIO !!!

WIRELESS TELEGRAPH OF THE FUTURE, TODAY!!!!!!

Yes you too can be sporting technology that would be the envy of Tesla and Marconi. Are you too incompetent to program your new mp3 player with stuff you want to hear? Then let HDR decide what you want to listen to (incompetents like you don’t deserve better). Do hundreds of channels confuse you? No problem, (H)ardly (D)ifferent radio is just that hardly different, we don’t have the talent to fill the channels we already have much less extra channels.

HDR offers a fish a bicycle and you are welcome to ride along.

HD RADIO …….The smart fishes bicycle!

MORE PROOF OF (H)ardly (D)ifferent Radio’s DISMAL position in the market.
Unfortunately for AC/NAB SHILL amazon.com keeps track of sales by category hourly and it shows only one HD radio in the electronics top 25 while standard radio has 4 radios in the top 25 this is exceeded by Satellite radio which has six radio’s in the top 25 That more than HD and standard radio combined!
The rankings change from time to time but if you look through them you’ll see AC NAB/ SHILL is a DELUSIONAL DOUCHEBAG Satellite radio, ipods and their accessories are vastly more popular in amazon's top 100 than HDR. Don’t let this shill point to HD ready radios you can track the popularity of the HD head units verses Satellite head units with amazon too.

POOR LITTLE DESPERATE NAB FAGGOT CAN”T EXPLAIN HDR’s DISMAL AMAZON.COM SALES SO HE LASHES OUT!!
