While the clock awaiting approval for the Sirius-XM merger has finally stopped, another one continues to run down.The Opie & Anthony Show has found itself in a precarious position with XM Satellite Radio as their contract is up for renewal and is set to run out in 65 days, reports FMQB.
To date, there has been no contact about O&A's deal being renewed. It's been thought that the hold-up in XM renewing the program was because of the pending merger, so that could change now that the FCC has voted to approve the Sirius-XM deal.
Still no news is bad news right now, and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. CEO Mel Karmazin has repeatedly said he doesn't believe in sharing content with regular radio. The only thing for fans to do right now, is wait and see.

I don't listen to O&A, (then again, there's a lot I don't listen to) but a lot of content is is rebroadcast on satrad, and that is a convenience to listeners, especially if a local affiliate doesn't carry the program. If we take this statement at face value, all cable news stations should also be dumped.

As much as i dislike O&A's show, from a business perspective, it would be a bad decision not to renew them. They are sorta popular and have a cult satellite radio following.
O and A have barely 100,000 listeners. Not worth it to keep them. And BTLS does not share content. He does two separate shows. His Sirius show is not broadcast on FM, nor the other way around

I'm not a big O&A Fan. But not renewing their contract would be stupid! That would cause probably 1/4 of the XM Nation to give the NEW Sat Radio co the MIDDLE FINGER! I can see XM radios being broken far and wide.
I am an O&A faithful fan. Have had XM since they came on XM. I also listen to Stern fairly regularly. If O&A go, I'm probably done with Satrad as a platform. That being said though, I have to admit that I agree with Mel's line that their content should be, SOLELY, on Satellite. The truth to the matter is the following:
Are they bigger than Howard Stern? No. Artie said it best last week. Howard is the ONLY radio guy ever to become an A-list celebrity. It's true, and Howard should get props for that.
The boys would have an audience that would stand nicely against Howard if they would have stayed XM Exclusive. They were building strongly right up until they returned to terrestrial...and literally came to a screeching halt the second they signed the co-op deal.
Simply put, the terrestrial side of the show isn't as good as the XM portion, and the show as a whole has not been as good since they went to doing the terrestrial portion. We all bought Satellite radio to NOT have restrictions on the content.
Howard doesn't have enough content to maintain 2 channels, and O&A doesn't have enough to maintain 1. Lose Howard 101, cut the fat on shit shows like Riley Martin, Weekend Virus, Jackie's Joke Hunt (or whatever that's called). Maintain 2 stations - Howard 100 and Virus 202. O&A, Ron and Fez on one, Howard, Wrapup, Bubba and Ferrell on the other. Rest of the time for cross-promotions, and "featured" showcases here and there.
Maybe I'm crazy here, but I'm tired of listener roundtables, brooklyn nights, podcasts, etc. to fill channel space. Quality content on 2 channels would make things better.
Finally, to all those that think the two shows can't get along...you are 100% wrong. Howard is on record saying he doesn't want to be in the same business with a bubba the love sponge. O&A are on record as saying how much terrestrial radio sucks and that they would never consider going back to it. Both shows are capable of putting whatever spin they need to on it and moving forward.

These were in house numbers, and it was also stated that they were the most listened to station on XM. I'm crossing my fingers. The only reason I have xm is for O and A. If they go, then I go. I agree with most of what was said about the show. The 100,000 number is just flat out wrong. Thats been said by Eric Logan and many news outlets. Its common knowledge that the Virus ch 202 is the most popular channel on the platform. Also due to the Ron and Fez show. I agree it would be stupid for big Mel not to renew their contracts. O and A and Howard can succeed together. When they were on cbs together, they were on a lot of the same stations and both shows pulled big ratings. Its time to get this done! Howards show isn't really for me but its clearly popular. Having both of these shows in any form, would be benifical to the new sat radio company.
O&A weren't the same once they started the CBS-XM thing. I always thought and still do think that was dumb. They were good at WNEW and good the first year or two at XM. The antholini stuff though is so awful. The shows been on the wrong path for over two years now.

The one thing to remember is the only reason O&A, R&F are on XM is they are cheap, Hugh Panero was smart enough not to back up the Brinks and put the entire corporation in jeopardy just to over pay any content, talent or programming.
O & A might keep their show, but they'll be working fir a helluva lot less money when compared to their previous contract. The same goes for Stern and other high price content. The money simply isn't there to pay the huge amounts that they were getting before. It will be the talent's choice whether he wants to stay on at a lesser, but still healthy contract sum or go try to find work elsewhere. In all likelyhood he/she won't make the kind of money that satrad is offering even at the reduced contract amount. Perhaps in time the contract sums will go up considerably again, but satrad simply has to start making a genuine profit soon or it will be history.

I'm more of a Ron and Fez Show fan than anything, but Opie and Anthony are a huge draw - they were the first to move to satellite radio, pioneered the format and have consistently brought in new subscribers. From a business standpoint, it would be foolish. I turned to satellite radio mainly for Ron and Fez (and Opie and Anthony), but also for variety - that's satellite radio's leg-up on terrestrial radio. And if O&A don't make the cut, there will be drastic cancellations (myself included) - and that's bad press. And let's not fool ourselves and think Stern is going to be around forever.I don't see another half a billion dollar contract in his future - and that's what he thinks he's worth. Someone will need to carry the load.
O and A are the number one show with the most AQH from 6am to 10am on XM, was in the last ratings book. Don't see why XM would let go of there show.

I'm not an O&A fan but I really don't think they're going anywhere, unless they decided to implode like they've done a few times before.

Keep them both - what does it hurt. I had XM way before OA joined but would consider dropping the service if Mel kicked them out of spite.
I think the suspension last year and everyone dropping the service for a month might turn out to save O&As asses in the end. It will really show Mel how many subs will be lost the day he drops the boys.
I also think the FM/XM model can probably be shown to actually increase subscribers in the FM markets. I bet Philly had more XM subs the day after they were dropped on FM from that area. Now that Mel has the ability to see those facts I think it only makes sense to re-sign them.
If there's no new contract by the first of September look for O&A to go out in a blazing fashion.. I mean burn the studio down literally.. these guys have a way of doing things full assed never half assed... and if they aren't re-signed my subscription will be cut in half, with my top fifty music channels and that's it...

I agree with this previous post. This would seem to me to satisfy all parties concerned and would be better use of the channel times. The little war you people carry on does not even exist between Howard and O&A anymore. No trash talk anymore whenever the other name is brought up that I have heard.

Ant stated flat out last weekend that they would be remaining on XM. What spin will the yesterdays news Hoo Hoo fans put on it when they are sitting right where they are now - in both XM studio's and Howies old chair - in a few months?
And they will not move O&A to afternoons, that would be to assume XM subs want Howard's show. If that were the case they would already have Sirius. Are people to pay for both Hoo Hoo & O&A? That's not going to happen, they have very little cross-over audience. Not to mention that Howard will retire or go back to FM when his current deal's up. With a monopoly to deal with he has zero leverage and he's already half retired now.
You can choose to ignore the facts but the facts are that O&A have nearly as many listeners on XM as Howard does on Sirius. If you count their FM listeners too, O&A easily beat Howard. If O&A go and their fans cancel 10% of XM's subs vanish overnight and the new monopoly is belly up immediately. Even Mel isn't that stupid. And even Mel knows Howard isn't the draw he once was and won't be around forever.
O&A will continue on XM in mornings on 202. Howard will continue to take days off and pretend it's 1985 on Hoo Hoo 100.

Bubba the Love Sponge kicks O&A's ass. I listened to them for a month because XM was installed in my car. I quickly converted that to Sirius soley b/c O&A sucked so bad. Do not renew their contract. Give the money to Bubba, his show is the future of satellite radio. For those who are going to cancel their subscriptions if O&A is canceled, Sirius XM can do without those whopping 12 subscriptions.

But I'm willing to bet there will be some sort of excuse to get out of it without disclosing they won't pay 100M a year for someone that works 4 day weeks.
