Delphi: Major Satellite Radio Announcement at CES

Delphi logo Delphi released a teaser today that they will be unveiling a major announcement about their satellite radio business at a special media event on January 4th. Speculation abounds about what this could be about and the only clues we have available are what's in the release. Here's a couple juicey tidbits to nibble on:

"Delphi's CES announcement will outline how the company plans to make the satellite radio experience available to even more people."

and...

"Multimedia Radio - Delphi will introduce a new multimedia radio receiver that is packed with features including MP3, Secure Digital Card (compatible) voice notes and more."

Now, this makes my lil' blogger fingers get all itchy with excitement. "Make the satellite radio experience available to even more people" makes me think there will be a new service somehow integrated into vehicles or their devices. But I think the key here is that this will be about their satellite radio business and not necessarily a device. The Multimedia Radio may only be part of the equation.

So, since we're speculating here, I'm just gonna throw this out there: I have a funny feeling this has something to do with the XM/Fox/DirecTV love-fest we've been hearing so much about. My guess is that XM and DirecTV will make an announcement at CES 2006 that unveils a portable video/satellite radio device - produced by Delphi - and that outlines a deeper partnership for the future. Pure speculation, but hey, you never know.

Tony Snow: No FOX News on Sirius come January 1st

No FOX News on SIRIUSFirst Alan Colmes, and now Tony Snow has announced that after Friday December 16th, he will no longer be heard on SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

Also, from Tony Snow's website:

*As of January 1st, Sirius Radio will also no longer air any FOX News programming. Please let Sirius know how you feel about this change.*

I really have a funny feeling that there's more to this XM/Fox stuff. I guess we'll have to wait for the beginning of next year to find out...

SIRIUS losing FOX News as of January 1st!

FOX News RadioI've been hearing whispers about this for a while (and some not so quiet), but now Alan Colmes has announced on the air that Fox News will be leaving Sirius unless they can come to agreements and is asking listeners to show their support. His website even has additional details:

  • As of December 16th, Alan Colmes will no longer be on Sirius Left.
  • As of January 1st, FOX News Radio will no longer be carried on Sirius.

Listeners are asked to call 1-888-539-SIRIUS to let Sirius know that they still want FOX News. I have a funny feeling that there's something bigger brewing here than we think. Stay tuned.

Fox News exclusive on XM in 2006?

An Orbitcast reader found this ad in today's Daily Variety with some pretty bold copy that Fox News will be exclusive with XM Satellite Radio come 2006. We heard about this possibility a little while back in October and this ad is a strong hint towards exactly that. If true, which it's still not 100% confirmed, what would this mean for the Sirius / Fox News relationship?

More on the Sirius / Fox News Debacle...

Get Sirius Info has some additional information on the Fox News / SIrius contract “dispute” — apparently there was an “admin error” with the programming that sparked it all. I still think we need to keep an eye on this one…

UPDATE: Reuters has a whole write up on this as well with more details on the “administrative error.” Kevin Magee, Senior VP Fox News Radio said that the deal with Sirius involving both the Fox News television and radio programing ends at the end of the year, unless successfully renegotiated.

Sirius and Fox News Splitting?

The rumor mill was churning at full tilt today when The Drudge Report reported this morning that Fox News is pulling their programming from Sirius over a contract dispute.

I have a funny feeling that this could be just the tip of the iceberg. The timing behind Fox possibly pulling from Sirius and signing with XM are just too close to ignore. Keep an eye on this one as something tells me that this could be big. Very big.
