HD Radio Alliance opposes merger, cries "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!"

Waaaaaaaaahh!!The HD Digital Radio Alliance has filed a comment with the FCC officially opposing the Sirius-XM merger... oddly enough, taking a seemingly opposite stance to the company behind HD Radio's technology, iBiquity.

The organization stated it's opposition to the merger while iBiquity chose not to take a position at all.

Both do agree on one thing though: they want to have HD Radio technology embedded into Satellite Radio receivers.

The Alliance added that HD Radio "cannot be considered a competitive alternative to satellite radio." Too bad their marketing message seems to say otherwise. Is this the vision for Radio 2020? C'mon guys, it wasn't that long ago that you said satellite radio isn't a "real business," and now you want a free ride?

This just keeps getting stranger.....

HDR/iBiquity == Leetches

This reminds me of an old biker saying.
Ass, Gas, or Grass .........NOBODY rides for free!!

The NAB, iBiquity, and HD alliance, go away. NO FREE RIDES.

BTW, I tried HD radio in Pittsburgh. It totally sucks, and made my analog channels "squeal" a bit.

I'm opposed to the merger, until they have Blu-Ray copy technology imbedded into sat radio receivers. Oh, and the receivers must be able to blow me while I drive.

Well, the blowing part is easy, they can just install one of those little computer fans, it would probably make the cpu run better anyway.

Chairman Barnett needs to approve the merger and stop the nonsense by the junior staff. Chairman Martin needs to put a stop to all this nonsense from organizations trying to leap frog the expense of starting a business. HD radio was launched in Europe 10 years ago and failed. HD and internet radio is just terrestrial radio in disguise. Let them go out and lease some excess satellite space from other companies just as Slacker has done or just as other companies in Europe are now doing. The group that Jesse Jackson speaks for should contact Slacker. I'm sure Slacker could use the programming. In fact, this group should go out and make an offer for Slacker if they're really serious! Sirius and Xm are doing an excellent job of adding diverse programming and continue to do so. They need all the bandwidth to add programming and improve sound quality. And another thing, Sirius and Xm do not have any agreements with OEMs excluding the use of HD radio. That is utter nonsense. Let them negotiate their own OEM deal. For crying out loud, next thing you know Steve Jobs will want a built in ipod too! The concessions that the combined Sirius and Xm company are proposing are precedent setting in the media industry.

Any intelligent comments welcome!

hey Ryan, Where did you get David Rher's baby photo from?

What is iBiquity crying about:

"Lincoln Mercury, Visteon and iBiquity to Showcase HD Radio?"

"Both Ford and Visteon have agreements with iBiquity Digital, the sole developer and licenser of digital AM and FM radio in the United States, with Visteon already developing HD Radio capable OEM receivers for the 2004 model year."

Good luck with interoperable satrad receivers:

"Regarding the Technical Aspects of the SDARS Providers XM and Sirius"

"There are significant differences in certain technical aspects of the two SDARS systems as deployed by XM and Sirius. The systems as currently deployed are not interoperable. That is to say, an XM receiver cannot receive the Sirius signal and vice versa. Thus, as is true today, if the proposed merger of XM and Sirius were consummated, consumers would still need to purchase a new interoperable receiver in order to receive the signals of both providers. These differences in system operation, function, and structure make the design and implementation of a single unified and interoperable receiver both complex and expensive. In fact, both XM and Sirius have been working in a joint venture to develop an interoperable radio since 2000. At this time, no interoperable radios have been introduced into commercial production."

Struble and Ferrera - go away, even terrestrial radio is getting tired of your childish hi-jinks!

Good - I hope this starts in-fighting between iNiquity and the Cartel!

HD came in fighting other stations with its obnoxious jamming and it will go out the same way. HD cheerleaders fought listeners who expressed concerns and asked questions about their HD 'carny shill'.

Listeners got the message - and fled.

Now, ever bellicose and totally lacking a worthy product, HD cheerleaders fight amongst themselves.

Ryan,

You run a halfway respectable blog regarding the satrad industry. Quit using the whole "Whaaaa" thing everytime some disagrees with your views on the merger. You lose your credibility.

"Because if Greg & Tony didnt think for us,how would us sheep think at all?"

Actually, O&A have only supported the merger on the air. Its the fans who don't. Get your facts straight, or shut up. Wait, just shut up.

"Opie throws down the challenge to Howard Stern, who will be on SIRIUS in fifteen months...you put the O&A show up against yours, with the same exposure...and we win."

@Frank the Frowner: The "wah" has nothing to do with opposing my views on the merger, it has to do with their ridiculous conditions and claims.

Terrestrial radio wants to have its cake and eat it too - except they don't want to pay for either.

They want to play music without paying the performers.
They want to the gov't to require they be in all satellite radio receivers.
They want to require all OEM deals be dropped so they can get a free ride.
They want to impose 'localism' restrictions via the gov't as well.
etc etc etc

I know you've been reading Orbitcast for a long time, so you should know that I honestly don't care if someone opposes my views - I WELCOME IT. Read the forums and the heated discussions going on there - there's ABSOLUTELY no squelching of views and opinions there OR on these comments.

But these guys don't care about going head-to-head and actually producing a good product. They're taking the same tactics as the RIAA and using legislation and lobbying to get their way. And that deserves a big ol' "WAAAAHH" in my book.

Frank the Frowner just got PWNED

run back to hackbag.com

I just want to add real quick that this is a SATELLITE RADIO blog. So if I ridicule and chastise terrestrial radio... good.

These guys have about 10 different industry rags pumping their egos with pro-terrestrial propaganda. So there's no problem with satellite radio having it's own outlet in the form of an opinionated bastard like myself. The difference being that I have absolutely no problem criticizing XM and Sirius when they screw up.

Hell, terrestrial radio wants to prevent Amber Alerts from airing on satellite radio in the form of legislation. AMBER ALERTS?! All so they can "preserve radio." These are guys have absolutely no morals, so why should I treat them as if they do?

Wow, as a fan of O&A I wouldnt even know where to find all those links you just posted. What does that say about you?

I honestly do not see how these people can honestly think that if you have HD built in to a Satellite receiver you would choose the less of the two and listen to HD. If they want to pay to have it in there then let them, we all know nobody will use it. But to think that it should be required for the satrad companies to integrate HD and foot the bill, thats just insane and shows their fear of the technology

"Wow, as a fan of O&A I wouldnt even know where to find all those links you just posted. What does that say about you?"

theres a brand new website,it's pretty cool!!!! although im not sure it'll last that long though
heres the link
http://www.google.com

I've got a GREAT way HD Radio could be integrated into Satellite Radio...

Put an HD Radio transmitter in your XM/Sirius receiver! That way everything is still in digital form, and the song/artist data can be transmitted too! Surely they must be talking about that kind of integration, right?! :-)

The baby photo . An Orbitcast classic .

come up with that all by yoursellf?

hoo hoo
tell em fred

and most importantly...."ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Jealous because O&A have fans who care enough and are willing to do proactive things to help their show?

"Jealous because O&A have fans who care enough and are willing to do proactive things to help their show?"

like Ratings and subscribers?oh forget it.. nevermind

I think that picture (haha!) just about sums up the iBlock Alliance and iNiquity's attitude. They have a complete loser on their hands and they know it. They're grasping at anything now to try to get their malfunctioning, noisy, range-cutting, harmful interference, jamming technology jump started. Thinking about a Satellite radio with an iBlock receiver in it reminds me of one of those old portable radio and record player combinations that were popular in the 70's, many of them had an 8 track player also built in which was about as useful as having a garbage disposal installed in them. If by some joke of ill fate this ridiculous last gasp proposal were to actually pass, the only difference between the old combination radios and the new ones would be that the iBlock receiver installed in the satrad's would spew the garbage not dipose of it.

Can someone please explain to me why the Hoo Hoo Fans are so determined to see O&A off the satellite picture? I don't care if Howie is on or not. If merged, I won't listen to his show, but I have no problem with his show continuing. I'd be annoyed his is bloated salary causes cuts in things I care about, but other then that, his existance at all doesn't reay effect me. From what I see, thats most (if not all) O&A fans here. We may not like him, but at the end of the day, WE DON'T CARE.

Contrast that with the Howard fans. They want O&A fired and banished. Why is that? Leave and let live, jerks.

"Can someone please explain to me why the Hoo Hoo Fans are so determined to see O&A off the satellite picture?"

Because Hoo Hoo fans have nothing better to do once their mindless master is off the air. They've got 19 hours per day after his show stops plus the three days he's off for his fans to clog Orbitcast with mindless drivel about another radio show and their few "pests".

But wait, any second now 0.0, aka Pest Spin, will be in here howling and hollering about the few "pests" and a show that doesn't matter. That's the problem with Hoo Hoo fans, they are obsessed with things that don't "matter".

This is why I don't waste my time listening to EITHER show.

JERKS!!! Hey,lets watch the language around here please...real simple..0.0 came out shooting at the mouth that "howards irrelevent"....."howard picked the wrong sat company"..."its gonna be so fun to bury him"..."we have all of his listeners now"etc etc

fail fail fail & more fail
so if you ask why we give 0.0 shit, its like watching a massive train wreck.horrific and real bad but you just can help yourself from watching

bottom line.0.0 are just added to the extensive list of "shock jocks"(manqueer, mark and brian, debella,)that shit talked Stern and failed

Your Welcome!you are now informed, now back to your boring morning zoo radio or perhaps switch to Imus whos ass 0.0 have been sucking lately(the visual of that is disturbing)
