Howard Stern a "Victim Of A Smear Campaign"?
Howard responded yesterday against the claim that his popularity is waning, based on traffic to Stern's website, stating that "I've got more enemies now than I ever have. We are so successful here at Sirius Satellite Radio. I have the entire radio industry fucking with me, hiring publicists to plant whatever shit they can say in the paper to make it seem like we're losers.
"My enemies are way worse than the government. Big business is my enemy, business people desperate for money. And let me tell you, they are way worse than the government," Stern continued.
Now while I find the comparison to website traffic to one's celebrity status a bit... useless. I also have to openly disagree that this would be a conspiracy of some sort put together by terrestrial radio. The publishing of the Hitwise numbers was simply a bait for media attention, in my opinion, and it is obviously working. But a smear campaign?
Stern later promised to release numbers contrary to the report by Tancer that will show traffic on his website has not dropped since joining Sirius.

Typical Howard. "Everyone is out to get me because I invented everything." He's not in the press, so he takes the opportunity to create his typical victim crap. This is why I stopped listening to him years ago. He was funny in the 80's in DC (before he was FIRED -- yes, fired -- he never mentions that, not even in his movie), but then it all became about him. It's old, Howard.

"We are so successful here at Sirius Satellite Radio"
From his show.
"When I sit in a meeting and they spell out that this is growing faster than cellphones"
"When IM adding 6000 subscribers a day"
6k a day just for Howard. That is impressive. Sirius is huge, so huge maybe the SEC should investigate the numbers being advertised.

The only reason Stern's web popularity has gone down is because he's no longer being fined for what he's doing! Pretty much all the media attention to Stern has been about how he pushes the line of obscenity in media, but now that he's on satellite, that's a moot point.

What smear campaign?
There has been almost not talk of Howard's actual show for 9 months in the mainstream. There has been talk of sirius stock and his lawsuit.
Satellite is a small pond, time to realize that.

Whether you like Howard or not, this argument is silly. The part left out of all this is that the numbers being tossed around by the original author are being taken from search engine user searches.
These numbers are hardly accurate for measuring a web sites popularity. I would call them more accurate for measuring a web sites increasing interest or "buzz".
For example, if a user searches for a particular web site in any search engine. Why would the users need to keep returning to the search engine to "re-find" the web site each time they wanted to return to the site.
I visit his web site almost daily and have it in my bookmarks and favorites list (no search engine required) ... and believe it or not I'm even smart enough to type in the address without the help of a search engine.
BOOKMARKS, FAVORITES AND A USER TYPING A WEB SITE ADDRESS THEY ALREADY KNOW INTO THE ADDRESS BAR ARE NOT MEASURED BY SEARCH ENGINES.
And let's be realistic .. I don't think even a person that hates Howard Stern needs Google or Yahoo to tell them the web site address (howardstern.com).
Posted by: David Costin | September 15, 2006 5:34 PM
he never released this response to the media, so its not like he went out of his way to make his points to everyone. i thought no one listened to the show?
he went on this rant because he claimed he has figures to dis-count these. if everyone here heard the clips from the news shows talking about this, stern wouldn't look this 'ridiculous' to some.

Re: Their act... I don't seem to recall O&A having a "token" cackling in a dunking booth.
But seriously now, I started listening to Howard when he was in afternoon drive on WNBC. I followed him to mornings on K-Rock and continued listening to him and following everything he did, up until about the middle of 2000.
I would listen to him in the morning and then to O&A in the afternoon. I never thought that O&A stole anything from Howard. Sure both shows were in the "shock" genre, and both were shows that were based on comedy, but there was a different flow to each. To me, O&A seemed less scripted and more "stream of consciousness" and "off-the-cuff." It was a freshness of the show that intrigued me.
I was personally looking for a nice NYC and syndicated radio war that Infinity could've made millions in advertising on. That never took place. I remember the days of O&A having to refer to Hoo Hoo as "Radio Edit" and when they couldn't even mention his name.
I lost a lot of respect for Howard then, and after the decline (in my opinion) of his show after his divorce and the loss of key show members, I lost interest in the show altogether.
To say that he invented the radio shock jock act, especially O&A's act is preposterous. The shows are completely different. It would be the equivalent of the Beatles or Led Zeppelin accusing today's artists of ripping them off. Everyone in a creative medium has people who influenced them. That is how it works. Howard didn't invent being shocking. He certainly perfected it and became larger than life and changed the way talk radio was done. But he is crazy to think that other people can't come along and do something in the same genre, and still be successful and funny without being accused of ripping him off. This does not apply to the local jocks in those tiny markets that blatantly steal from the major shows like Howard and O&A. Mancow was one of the biggest thieves out there. And we see where he is today (unemployed). O&A, like Howard, are original in the content that they provide their fans. I wonder if Lenny Bruce is screaming from his grave that Hoo hoo ripped him off, since Howard always said that Bruce was one of his major influences.
Believe me, I was one of Howard's loyal acolytes. I bought everything that he every did and considered him a god. But, he is sounding delusional right now and he's sounding truly pathetic. I could never go back to listening to him.

It's pretty sad that the only way he can keep his name out there nowadays is to complain that he is being picked on instead of for what he's doing on his show.
Posted by: Mr. Irrelevant | September 15, 2006 6:42 PM
Look up the names of the people that are writing the aricles Howard is questioning. They have PR ties. Get your heads out of your asses. Howard is right. Google is a really cool tool, use it sometimes.
Posted by: I_hate_PR | September 15, 2006 7:17 PM
On FM, Stern had the FCC as an enemy and he played the victim all the time. Now that he is on Satellite and can't use the FCC as an enemy he has to come up with a new one. So now he is saying that the "entire radio industry" is his enemy. Therefore the victim schtick continues. Rather than just saying "you know, I'm disappointed that more of my fans did not follow me to Sirius" and being honest, he has to be a victim and try to get his name in the news somehow. Although that part is working it is kinda sad and is making him look a little silly.
Posted by: cable guy | September 15, 2006 7:35 PM
If "ripping off" Stern is going to a mic and doing funny and shocking things, he's got a lot of litigation ahead.

3.) Howard who?
Posted by: Jer | September 16, 2006 10:14 AM
To me, it's just a sign that Stern can't stand not having an enemy. If it can't be the FCC, it'll be "big business" conspiring against him.
I'd have more respect for the show if he realized that he's starting over, in a lot of ways, and needs a newer act now. But it really appears that he hasn't.

Tom C., calling Stern out is consistent with O&A's past dealing with the former KOAM when he speaks ill of them or makes preposterous claims. The only time this was not the case, was when Howie had them silenced back in the WNEW days. It is hard for me to take Howie seriously as a proponent of free speech, when he has O&A muzzled or "put in jail." as he confirmed to Hannity. He should be ashamed of himself. In addition, anyone who believes the comment he made that HIS Sirius show is growing faster than cell phones,is drinking the Koolaid. I'm sure he will come up with some form of Howie Math that zombies such as you and that master of the english language, sternfan73, will believe; but really. Also, I wouldn't mind if O&A devoted an entire show to calling out Howie as being a hypocrite and a cartoon of himself (very young GF, house in the Hamptons, too important to attend Gary's father's funeral, etc.). It makes this former Stern fan laugh really hard. Baba Booey to you all.

hoo hoo sucks. o and a are much more talented and actually care about their fans. Hoo hoo is just out to make money.
