Howard Stern on his show today discussed the suspension of Opie and Anthony by XM Satellite Radio. Citing a recent article in the New York Post about the O&A suspension, Stern responded directly to Gregg (Opie) Hughes request for a truce with their longtime nemesis.
"What do you say Howard, are you with us or are you against us?" Hughes was quoted as saying in the article. (Full audio available here.)
"I'm not spending a minute thinking about you," Stern said in response on his show. "I'm not with you, and I'm not against you. Your biggest 'nemesis' is you. You're fighting with you."
Howard further distanced himself from the situation.
"Listen guys, I've got nothing against you, do you're show, have a blast," Stern continued. "But don't call on me to help you. I don't condone what you said about Condoleezza Rice."
The question remains whether Stern's show itself will fall victim to this newfound scrutiny of what is said over the airwaves - even if on unregulated airwaves. It's painfully obvious that the reason why XM is being so careful with how Washington perceives satellite radio (especially the "shocking" content on satellite radio) is due to the pending Sirius-XM merger.
Stern himself was the topic of discussion at the Congressional hearings over the Sirius-XM merger, particularly when it came to the topic of decency. As the Wall Street Journal points out, the satellite radio companies have signaled a willingness to work with the FCC on the issue of decency as part of a merger.
Mel Karmazin even offered a block-and-rebate style tiered pricing plan, allowing consumers to receive a discount on blocked explicit channels. But with Stern likely being seen as "Public Enemy #1" by the decency police, you can bet that he too will do his best not to ruffle any features in the weeks to come.

Howard may not be funny/entertaining enough to attract a paying audience that's as big as the O & A paying audience, but he's smart enough to realize that the balance of his $500,000,000 contract is riding on the merger. If the merger doesn't happen, Sirius is going to go bankrupt. No company like Sirius can't survive on less than $3.00/share.

First off, 700,000 people listening to a channel on XM when they have 8 million is mediocre at best. 9% of people that got XM was for O&A, and that's the truth. Shows that have this low of a number can still be a top rated show when you have 170 channels. O&A don't bring that much money and they don't get paid that much either, so they have less freedom of speech than Howard, who pulls in 2 million+ listeners for 2 channels. 33% of people that got Sirius was for Stern.

This comment is neither pro/com Stern nor pro/com O&A, but merely a statement of fact. Satellite radio is a failing concept. People do not want radio anymore. They don't want it free and they certainly don't want to pay for it. The wave of the future is the podcast and a billion iPod owners will attest to that.
Yes, Sirius is alive squarely on the shoulders of Stern and his cadre of fans, but even he took a body blow at the changeover, lest we forget his "moochers" tirade over a large portion of listeners not following him to his new set-up.
Yes, satellite radio is meant to be free of censorship because it is funded by subscription (primarily). But if subscription funds are not cutting it, corporate sponsorship will soon intervene, which means advertising influence will very soon be a major role in not only Stern's life again, but in O&A's, Bob Dylan's Theme Time Hour and anyone else coming to you in pristine digital broadcast.
A previous poster said it is all about the money, and he's right in that respect. Where he's wrong is by asserting Howard Stern walks away the winner in this round. Untrue. Right now, he is the financial king of his castle. When Land O'Lakes suddenly becomes a financial part of satellite funding, they also will yield some influence, subtly at first but forcefully in time. Stern will no longer be selling his show to his fans, he'll be selling cheese and told, then as now, do NOT offend potential cheese purchasers.
For the O&A fans, this comes as little consolation as this latest brouhaha surely influenced the abrupt cancellation of their Atlantic City poker shindig, slated only three days from now. Do notice that these things don't seem interconnected, but one influenced the other, and then a third, and here we are. Pete, Howard has made assloads of money for CBS and Mel. THAT'S why they're "buddies"; Doesn't make sense to slaughter a cash cow.
