Howard Stern runs ads on regular radio

My radio alarm clock woke me this morning and his spot was playing during O&A on K-Rock. I found it awfully strange that K-Rock would accept ad revenue for this. They must really be hurting to run ads for a competitor.

Howard who? And why would I care?

I think its interesting that they are letting him do ads on terrestrial radio. Maybe because its limited to him and he isnt promoting all the music that Sirius XM has to offer.

Its nice to be getting more work out of him too.

Either terrestrial radio is hurting for ad revenue or SiriusXM shelled out big bucks for these ads.

It's not unusual for ads for other medium to appear on radio...in fact, Howard did XM ads on his show long before he signed the Sirius deal.

But the fact that HE'S doing them...that's a sign of desperation. He's not doing them because he wants to, I guarantee that.

Howard's deal ends in 2 years. It won't be renewed (at least not for what he's making now), and SiriusXM has 2-3 years left of existence anyway.

Good point. Stern is one of the most recognizable names in the entertainment world. Sirius has been missing the boat by not promoting him more. Actually up until recently their whole advertising department seemed to take a vacation. They need to get out there and sell this freakin product. I can only tell so many people by myself!

I'm afraid we have been wrong all along, Howard promoting on terrestrial radio is like seeing a Burger king poster pinned up in a McDonnalds....it just does not make any sense unless Mels plan was to do this in the first place. Ad dollars given to terrestrial radio are insignificant when listeners flock to sirius, it's self destructive and does not happen unless there is something in it for Terrestirial, This is why I think Mel has been in bed with CBS all along.

I was driving through NY last week and on WFAN they were running ads for Sirius XM as the home for all things sports.

Funny as hell. The advertising revenue has completely dried up for terrestrial radio.

It's about time they advertised somewhere besides Sirius or XM.

I actually heard one of these ads the other day during a NJ Devils game... I thought for a second Sirius was suddenly giving me a free NHL package.

To those saying that this is an act of desperation for Sirius, you are way wrong. Regardless of the service Sirius provides, terrestrial radio is still a far bigger player. We hold 5-7% of the total radio market. Using terrestrial to advertise is no different than advertising on TV. You have to reach people to sell a product. This is a brilliant move and shows the desperation of TERRESTRIAL to accept the ad.

I think the point that's being missed is this: Sirius and XM could both disappear tomorrow and it wouldn't hurt so-called "regular" radio. Most people listen to the radio in the morning and in the evening because they're in their cars or on the way to work. And most cars out there still don't even HAVE satellite radios. Howard is doing the ads because he HAS to...he's desperately trying to save his phoney baloney gig.

The ultimate failure of satellite radio will come from the fact that people like Howard are being paid too much and delivering too little...and too few people are willing to pay for what they can already get for free on their car radios and iPods.

This guy is money hungry. After bashing regular radio now he is on it trying to get revenue. The fact CBS allowed him to stay on after the sirius deal is crazy. He moved to pay-per-view where the rate jumped 4 dollars a month. His salary is inhuman.

I don't dislike the guy - but enough already. He is so rich and disconnected from his fans he can't possibly put on a good radio show.

What ever happened to truth in advertising?

FM used to take ads for XM. They stopped because SDARS started to become a threat. But right now no one is advertising. That's what happens in a recession. The first thing that dries up is everyone's advertising budget. This is why FM is again taking the ads. With no one buying ad time you take what you can get. As soon as the economy is back on track and the usual advertisers restore their budgets, FM will no longer run these ads. It's that simple.

I've heard sat rad commercials on terrestrial many times. Its just like having Comcast or U-Verse being advertised on DirecTV. It is not a big deal. Radio doesn't care where ad revenue comes from for the most part, they just want to sell the time.

WOW Siriusxm is DESPERATE. Lucky for siriusxm FM radio will take what little money siriusxm has left and run ads by a washed up radio person promoting a show which has SUCKED ever since he left FM radio. It's a win/win for FM radio. Paying for radio is for newbs and suckers.

If I had that hottie waiting for me at home, I sure as hell wouldn't want to get out of bed at 4 AM and have to leave the house. She's the worst thing that ever happened to Stern; if he was with some fat warthog, he wouldn't want to vacation so much, and the show would reap the benefits. He would never want to leave the studio if he had some repulsive pig waiting for him when he got home!

Give it time, though. This high maintenance bitch will eventually start to drive Howie bonkers, and then she will take the money and run. They all do.
