Internet radio streaming to your car isn't a pipe dream for years away. It's available right now, and using the new Ford SYNC, it's available this Fall using voice command.
See this video for a demo...
Mark Ramsey calls it "geekcasting" - a lovable word, but only given because there's a lot of steps involved in getting it to work. Funny, the same could be said about satellite radio.

Ryan - How is the internet radio getting to the phone in this demo? Is it through Wi-Fi? If it is then this won't work for a moving car Ryan. Excuse me if I'm missing something here. If its through Cell Phone radio and not specifically internet radio I can see it working. Just looking for some clarification. Thanks!

Presently I some sort of internet radio in my car. I have a ATT 8525 and Kenwood car radio with an aux input. THe 8525 has 3G abilities and I brought an aftermart program that allows me the hear music from XM online. In my home area the the signal is pretty good so far, only been using it a couple of days. Finally I can hear the Flow (channel 61) in my car.

Internet in my car?? I am lucky to have it at home and it costs $50 a month.
Sat radio costs less than that.

@MUSCLE13: It's connecting to the car via Bluetooth. Once you program the vehicle to recognize your phone via Bluetooth, it can do so seemlessly through voice command.
Then all you need to do is pull up any Internet Radio station through your smart phone, and you're instantly listening to Internet Radio. The "stream" itself comes through the cellular connection (3G).
Another example would be to connect an mSpot-enabled phone to your car. Since mSpot is streaming Clear Channel, ABC, Fox Sports, and many other channels - you can literally receive "regular radio" anywhere you have service nationwide.
@John: Many people with smart phones have unlimited data packages, so streaming the radio is no different to them and adds no additional fee. Sure, SatRad costs less... right now. But you also don't receive email or web access on your radio.

Ryan if what you are saying here is that you can receive internet radio on a smart phone and play it in a moving vehicle's stereo system anywhere you have a cellular connection then thats about 1 million internet radio stations available in the car.
If this is all true then this is the biggest story you broke since the terrestrial 10 k reports. 1 million internet radio stations available on the net in Ford Cars if you have a smart phone? How can the merger be denied?
I'm sorry but I'm not up to date on technology Ryan. Are you saying you can get AOL radio or Yahoo radio or Live 365 radio on an iPhone through a cellular connection web browsing without using Wi-Fi?

If you own a Smartphone with an unlimited data plan and have Bluetooth Audio in your car than you already have mobile Internet radio.
There are many directories including www.TalkStreamLive.mobi that list Talk, News, Sports and Music radio streams. The only skills you need are point and click.
Stations stream from 35 to 128 kbs for CD quality sound. You can bookmark any radio station stream on your player.

Bill - My question is if you own a smartphone can you connect to the internet through the cellular network and not wi-fi - and thus pick up AOL radio Yahoo radio Live 365 radio etc through your phone wherever you have a cellular signal?

Seriously Ryan ... this amazing change in car audio (ability to receive internet radio) needs to get to the FCC and the small number of people deciding this merger. These 2 companies cannot compete against internet radio and themselves at the same time. The merger is a must now.
Can you make sure this link gets to the right people in the FCC ?

Yes you can connect to the Internet on a Smartphone. Windows Mobile gives you Internet Explorer and a media player. An unlimited digital plan will give you Internet service in your car. Some Smartphones can receive free wi-fi.
I have not checked but the streams from AOL and Yahoo would need to be compatible with the media player on your phone. I use the free media player named TCPMP. It plays just about every audio and video stream format. There is a link to download it from the music page at www.TalkStreamLive.mobi

Ryan - This is absolutely the single biggest merger related news story since the merger was announced. Congrats on finding it. The competition argument is finished. There is no way to argue it if internet radio is available in the car. There are about 1 million internet radio stations out there today.

How does it sound though? Does it sound like digitized mush or is it crystal clear sound?
The technology is great but if we are degrading the sound quality then it sucks monkey nuts.

his comments really just make ford's R&D team look like a bunch of morons. they really didn't realize that a bluetooth audio link would allow them to stream any media, not just MP3s, from a smartphone? this is not new technology by any stretch. now, if the head unit could control the smartphone's media player remotely, that would be something. as it is, all the voice command can do is toggle the service on and off. big woop.

The sound quality is dependent on the digital stream. Talk at 35 kbs is better than terrestrial radio and music at 128 kbs produces an excellent CD quality sound. (I think better than “compressed” HD)
Also -- you do not need voice command -- just hit source to change to the tunner or CD.

Listen, this is a remarkable convergence of technologies that, it seems, no one saw coming, and for no added cost to the consumer. HERE'S A SHOCKING FACT: by going to crystalone.net on any (?) web client (such as on a smart phone) one can listen to Howard Stern 24/7 without subscribing to Sirius. In your home or car. This illustrates how XM's main competitor may not at all be Sirius, but internet radio.
And by the way, this isn't just Ford cars. It's ANY car! Just plug in a bluetooth adapter to your car stereo, tune in your smart phone, and PRESTO!
