iPhone 3G becomes radio alternative overnight

iPhone 3GAlong with the masses clamoring for the new iPhone 3G, the Apple App Store has opened up with more than 500 programs launching internationally.

One of those programs is Pandora, which previously was only available on other phones for a monthly fee. But on the iPhone, it's free. And that makes it "a credible alternative to broadcast (radio)," Pandora founder Tim Westergren told USA Today.

To add salt on the wound, along comes Shazam for the iPhone, which effectively nullifies HD Radio's oft-touted iTunes Tagging in one feel swoop. Shazam's Music Identification Software allows you to record a few seconds of a song you're hearing, and will tag it for iTunes purchase later.

Hear it, tag it, buy it... no HD Radio required.

So to all the naysayers (*cough* NAB *cough*) who bemoaned that the iPhone doesn't represent a viable alternative to satellite radio: you're wrong.

[USA Today, TUAW]
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

holy waste of packaging batman.

A radio alternative to some but definitely not to all.
Doesn't do what I need a phone to do.
and last but not least, it is only available on a mickey mouse network at&t.

I am happy have my satellite radio, phone and itouch seperate.

Ryan,

If this is true:

"So to all the naysayers (*cough* NAB *cough*) who bemoaned that the iPhone doesn't represent a viable alternative to satellite radio: you're wrong."

Then THANK YOU! Thanks for pointing it out that all of us are wasting our money paying for sat radio.

How ever one thing "you're wrong." about is HD Radio is live, local, radio with DJ's. HD Radio, being the future of radio IS still very much required.

Again though thanks for pointing out, you a top dog things satradio feel the iPhone with Pandora "represent(s) a viable alternative to satellite radio" I'm glad xm, sirius and 20 million subscribers will be happy to know we can all stop our satradio subscriptions as of today since Ryan at Orbitcast says the 3G iPhone "represent(s) a viable alternative to satellite radio." That will save us all $$$. Thanks Ryan.

The majority people that are buying Iphones are not likley to be sat rad users. They are the youth of America typically, the "my music, my content, my way" crowd that Apple has done a masterful job courting, converting, and owning.

Sat rad is a car based technology and thats where its original strength was and where it willl live or die. I have several friends that have both IPODS and Sat rad. they use the sat rad in the car and the IPOD everywhere else. Its easier, and its live content so they can get news and sports, something the I anything cant touch.

AOL Radio and Pandora are winners! Going to get some speaker docks for around the house. Cancelled my XM Helix a few weeks ago in anticipation. :)

Arielsquarefour,

You forgot a few words in your post...

I FEEL "The majority people that are buying Iphones are not likley to be sat rad users. They are the youth of America typically, the "my music, my content, my way" crowd that Apple has done a masterful job courting, converting, and owning. ALTHOUGH I KNOW THIS SHOWS MY IGNORANCE.

I FEEL "Sat rad is a car based technology and thats where its original strength was and where it willl live or die. I have several friends that have both IPODS and Sat rad. they use the sat rad in the car and the IPOD everywhere else. Its easier, and its live content so they can get news and sports, something the I anything cant touch. I JUST CONTRADICTED MY FIRST THOUGHT AND PROVE IM EVEN MORE CONFUSED, KNOW THIS ALSO SHOWS MY IGNORANCE.

The iPhone is not at all an alternative. I need to buy a phone for a minimum of $199, sign up for 2 years of service and pay a $75/month service charge. For a shitty internet connection? How is that competition? Not to mention the fact that there are less iPhones sold than either XM or Sirius have subs. And WTF is this about SDARS only being good in the car? I haven't driven my car in over a year and listen to SDARS about 8 hours a day. If you need your own MP3's, get an Inno. If this is to be a product relegated to only the car then it's a dead product.

"Who needs 'Tagging' for HD radio?"

"No 'HD tagging' required. No HD radios required, in fact. Why buy a new radio in order to tag your songs when you can do it on an iPod right now?"

http://www.hear2.com/2008/02/who-needs-taggi.html

HD radios were never needed for the HD Radio farce tagging. Pandora is FREE on the new iPhone - the HD Radio killer. With the new RadioGuard HD Radio may no longer be free, but Struble is really out of touch with reality, since he believes people would really pay for shitty HD Radio. The new RadioGuard will obsolete all current HD radios. HD RADIO IS A FARCE!

Now Now Pocketradio you will NOT spin this into your normal FUD due to your fear and desperation over the approved technology standard HD Radio. Ryan is claiming "So to all the naysayers (*cough* NAB *cough*) who bemoaned that the iPhone doesn't represent a viable alternative to satellite radio: you're wrong."

Your fear and desperation of HD Radio is getting worse. Face the FACTS Pocketradio your reputation is lower than dirt all over the net.

You forgot flytunes.fm

You forgot flytunes.fm

If you want original programming you get sat radio.....and now even sat TV too. Streaming video and radio have never been very good but I have been told are ok here. Free anything is also never been very good-look at napster-are they still in business?? For mobile people who want original content that is live they will be going with sat radio and tv that will be available in in all mobile devices soon-they are not just for car and minivans any more-thank god!!

iPhone with uSirius and no terrestrial radio. That's what I want for Christmas along with terrestrial radio paying the artist like satrad and the PAYOLA offenders in jail.

Will I be getting an iPhone 3G? Yes, more than likely. Will I be cancelling satellite radio? Not a chance. I may cancel one receiver, in order to take that money and put it towards XM Radio Mobile on the iPhone, whenever that comes around... But no, I won't be cancelling XM.

My full-time job has me driving almost 200 miles one day a week, and XM is a godsend as I drive over miles of area with few to no terrestrial radio choices, and no 3G coverage either. Plus, having a nice, portable cartridge that I can easily take between the Timex clock radio in my bedroom, my home theater system, my car, and work makes one receiver, plus my iPhone with XM Mobile (when it becomes available), that lets me listen to great music wherever I am that I don't have XM through a normal receiver.

I've never messed with Pandora... I've used Slacker only a little (maybe they'll have an iPhone client soon too?!)... but I love XM because I can listen to it anywhere... the same channels no matter what device, with lots of great programming that some of the internet radio services just can't match, no downloading or syncing necessary!

My god you NAB fluffers are unbelievable..."HD Radio is live, local, radio with DJ's" - exactly why NOBODY LIKES HD RADIO. We're tired of these hack DJs with no concept of a good set - want a great DJ? Subscribe to Sirius, and listen to Pat St. John on Sirius Blues 74. He doesn't bore you with stories - just gives relevant facts & background info about the artists. And puts together GREAT sets - strings songs together like a maestro.

That's true - forgot that the iPod/iPhone also have iRadio and FlyTunes, which does away which terrestrial radio stations!

Frank,

You blind ignorant satradio fanboys are "unbelievable" when you say "NOBODY" and "We're" you speak for only YOU. Pat St. John huh? Have you a clue where these "maestro's" worked longer than the time they have been with satradio? Thats right FM RADIO, you know the place where most are signing contracts again with satradio failing at such a quick pace. Pat St. John has been on the air in New York since 1973. I'm sure his agent Don Buchwald already is working to get Pat back on radio that has the ability to equal the longevity of his career. Your too ignorant to figure out that most of "these hack DJs" when on AM/FM were at the top of there games. Satradio offered them crazy money and like everyone else they took it, well the money is not satradio and neither is the fame, listeners or longevity which is why "these hack DJs" are all starting to flock back to AM/FM radio and satradio with empty pockets is powerless.

Well the i phone and i pod will be in buisness 10 years from now, will satellite radio?, I doubt it. My bet is on the i phone for entertainment as the big wigs have trashed satellite radio and it is sad.

Discover how good radio can sound. HD Radio™ technology lets stations transmit a higher-quality digital version of their regular AM/FM broadcasts. With HD Radio, you'll get:

Better sound quality: FM approaches CD-quality sound, and AM sounds as good as regular FM.
Static-free reception: No crackle, no hiss.
More listening options: A multicast-compatible HD Radio receiver lets you pull in extra channels that regular radios can't get.
Free programming: No monthly charges.

Hey isn’t this funny? Look what happens when you use google trends to look up the site that Anonymous Douchebag keeps spamming us with. Didn’t that asshole AC claim huge increase of traffic to the spam links? Further proof that AC is a lying sack of shit

“Your terms - www.hdradio.com - do not have enough search volume to show graphs.”

http://www.google.com/trends?q=www.hdradio.com&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

But if you try www.sirius.com or www.xmradio.com they both come back with results. More proof that people couldn’t care less about (H)ardly (D)ifferent radio no matter how free it is. On the other hand both pay services garner enough attention to generate data.

Discover how “the same” radio can sound. HD Radio™ technology lets stations transmit the same boring lackluster programming in higher-quality digital version of their regular AM/FM broadcasts. With HD Radio, you'll get:

Sound quality: BUZZ, HISS, CLICKS & DROPOUTS. FM approaches AM-quality sound, and AM sounds as good as two cans and a string. But of course CD’s and 320 bit rate Mp3’s exceed this quality

Reception-free reception: No crackle, no hiss. NO RECEPTION if you’re out of sight of our transmitters.

More listening options: A multicast-compatible HD Radio receiver lets you pull in extra channels of COMMERCIALS that regular radios can't get.

Free programming: No monthly charges BECAUSE OUR CONTENT IS WORTHLESS!

HD RADIO……….. THERE”S A REASON IT’S FREE

HD RADIO IT’S TIME TO …………….ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Add " iLL Rated" and "FUCK AC AND THE NAB" and "HDOA" and "YOU CAN RUN BUT............... " and "AC LUV'S IT IN THE REHR" to Pocketradio's list of hiding names to post his fear and desperation, with a little rude, crude and homophobic added in to prove Pocketradio's lack of character. Face the FACTS, nothing Pocketradio posts has a once of truth or fact to it. Nothing but a troll with a blog of FUD using site counters like they mean something, thats sad, fearful and desperate all at the same time, to say nothing about he desperate need to spam the net where ever he can find something posted about HD Radio. However that just lets even more educated people get to read and DEBUNK the TROLL known as Pocketradio. No reason to be so upset there Pocketradio it's your actions and only your actions only which are coming back to get you. You post FUD to try to fool the stupid like yourself and the educated around the net call you for your fear and desperate trolling DEBUNKING each and every one of your posts of ignorant FUD.

Pocketradio = TROLL
Pocketradio = DEBUNKED

I listen to Internet radio at home, XM and Stern (via recorded mp3 files) in the car.

I'm rediscovering my old CD collection in my car (new car has CD player, unlike trade-in). Plus I listen to favorite FM and AM stations at home and car. I listen to the internet broadcast of AM 630 since it's clearer, plus a few other AM radio talk shows from across the country, through the SqueezeBox. Sometimes I even listen to the music stations on Comcast cable TV (how many people know about these?).

Therefore, it's all good. Why pick just one? Maybe some day I'll start using HD radio, when they combine it with regular AM/FM radio. I don’t need HD to hear AM talk shows at FM quality when I can just listen to existing FM talk shows, or existing AM talk shows through the internet, which is similar to FM already. HD radio will probably be around for a while, it just seems to be redundant at this time, at least for audio entertainment. And current HD sets are way too expensive. Give it away, baby. Maybe it will find some other use, like for simulcasting concerts or other local events. Or it may be the 2000’s version of the 8-track.

KEEP SCREAMING MY NAME BITCH I"M GOING BALLS DEEP!

The iPhone in no way whatsoever is an alternative to satellite radio. I have a Sirius subscription not for the less than stellar music quality but for the LIVE programming. Specifically news talk radio and sports. I've been a Sirius subscriber for about 3 years now and have hardly ever used it for music and, honestly, used it almost primarily at work.....on my Windows based 8525.

If Apple would allow some access to Sirius it would allow for a lot of us inferior satellite morons to sleep better at night. Do you approve of that sir? God I hope so.

A topic that has come up again and again on our show is the threatened demise of your favourite, independent record store due to our digital music climate. Terry McBride recently called the indie record store "the last great musical community centre". Across Canada, many of these great stores continue to survive... some thriving, some hanging on by a thread.
