Kevin Martin subject of Congressional probe
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin received a letter today from Congress that are "investigating allegations from current and former FCC employees and other sources, which we have reason to believe are credible."
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair John Dingell (D-MI), sent Martin the request letter today. The letter was cosigned by the ranking Republican on the Committee, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas.
The letter's charges concern "management practices that may adversely affect the Commission's ability to both discharge effectively its statutory duties and to guard against waste, fraud, and abuse."
As a result, Martin has to deliver to Congress written records dating back 2005, including all e-mails, handwritten notes, phone conversation records, meeting schedules, and whatever else exists in paper or electronic form since January 2005 involving the audit's case file.
In addition, Dingell and Barton also want Martin to hand over any records that explain the Commission's policies on "communications between FCC personnel and outside entities" and any directives involving "limitations or restrictions imposed on FCC employees' ability to communicate with each other concerning official agency business" - among other items.
Martin has two weeks to deliver this information and records to Congress. As Ars Technica puts it, this request "has got to be turning the FCC completely upside down."
Perfect timing huh?

Martin has known this was coming for a long time. This was in the wind about 3 months ago when he either another letter or was informed the committee was going to be looking into his management activities. I hope this does not interfere with his "pledge" to get a decision by end of March, but if he wants to piss off the democrats, approving this merger is one way to do so.

Another waste of the taxpayers money!

I think it is good that Martin is being investigated, but I'm pissed that it is happening now because I fear this is only going to distract the FCC from making a decision on the proposed merger. We could be waiting a lot longer now for a decision. Man, I hate government agencies of all kinds.

Ryan:
Didn't indications that this was going to happen surface last year. A link to this article is being posted on several investor sights and being represented that this is out of the blue and will impede the merger. I swear I remember seeing something about Dingell criticizing Martin and stating he would open a probe or ask that one be opened way back in fall or winter of last year.

This is war against the FCC and president Bush. They want Mr. Martin out of the game.
I think they will fight back by approving this deal in no time!

You are 100% RIGHT Tigerman--Just like the law passed by the senate and the house wouldnt to spite Bush with protecting the country from threats--I wish all would realize this bozo is gone soon, so move on and do whats best for the country--oh yea..Its Congress that has a lower approval rating then bush--wonder why--

The agency, its chairman, and the decisions they make are under the microscope now. If the accusations are valid that the agency has been mis-managed, they should be. It is also very possible that any decision they make, particularly on more consolidation in the media, may be reviewed and perhaps blocked by congress.

Yes, sweeeeeet! Get that f*cker! He handed our airways over to that farce iBiquity and the HD Radio Alliance:
“HD Radio on the Offense”
“But after an investigation of HD Radio units, the stations playing HD, and the company that owns the technology; and some interviews with the wonks in DC, it looks like HD Radio is a high-level corporate scam, a huge carny shill.”

Mr. Martin and his predecessor, 'Baby Cleanse' are the reason I listen to Cuban stations. Nope, I ain't no commie and I don't speak Spanish. But I love the endless variety of Cuban music heard on Havana's Radio Progreso, Enciclopedia and Musical.
Cuban announcers speak with their audience. They communicate, rather than yap in manner of stateside made-over 70s FM jocks who fancy themselves talk host kingmakers.
Cuba's Radio Enciclopedia on 530 KHz and Radio Progreso on 640 feature strong signals of excellent fidelity. Sorry, TeamBLOC, they broadcast in good old fashioned 'buggy whip' analog rather than shonky, harsh, tiresome HD.
Mr. Martin and predecessor 'Baby Cleanse' publicly talked a great game of free enterprise but industry observers noted their private penchant for cronyism.
HD, the tapeworm that killed radio, is a study in cronyism. Incompetence, moribund destructive technology and disingenuous coercive promotions - HD has it all.
What a farce! What a 'carny shill'! Is it any wonder listeners rejected Clear Channel & cronies' ploy to use HD to jam competitors off the air and listeners into submission?
Check out the Sony SRF-59 for $15 at K-Mart - that is, if you can find 'em as they sell out quickly - and hear stations hundreds of miles distant. Fidelity is great and these little Walkmen run for days on a single AA cell.
HD stooge radios devour alkaline cells in an hour or two. Such innovation!
Is it any wonder that Martin is under the microscope for his cynical sellout to BigRadio and betrayal of the public trust?
Mr. Martin and his predecessor allowed a handful of greedy-guts to take over our airwaves and jam them with HD's shrieking white noise. There's no excuse for this.
HD is BigRadio's sleazy scheme to jam public airwaves. Is it any wonder that formerly high-flying BigRadio stocks now are regarded as Wall Street's sewer pickles?

Many of the sites that come up in the search engines just don't have exactly what you need. This one does.
