Zune

The much anticipated Microsoft Zune has been officially unveiled today and no - it doesn't include satellite radio. So sadly, the speculation was wrong, but then again, so was the iPod speculation.

The Zune, which comes in three colors (black, brown and white) will pack a 30Gb hard drive, a built-in FM tuner, 3.0-inch screen, and 802.11 WiFi.

Rather than rehash everything, you might as well check out Gizmodo and Engadget because those guys have more than enough photos and info to keep you entertained for a while.

Unfortunately, because of the FM-support, Zune will now be filed away into "The Competition" category until something changes. Accessories are also available that solidify this position, just as the Zune Car Pack, which is a FM-tuner with AutoSeek and a Zune Car Charger.

Check out a couple big ol' close-up shots of the Zune for you lazy clickers after the jump...

But you can stream XM or Sirius...Right?

Let's see:

1) Expensive - Last I heard this brick was going to cost $300 - $50 more than the equivilent Ipod
2) Heavy, restrictive, plays-not-for-sure DRM that's bound to frustrate the hell out of a good portion of users.
3) Big, ugly form factor with fake click wheel. Yecch. Microsoft Design is an oxymoron.
4) FM Radio support? No one cares. If they did, one of the iPod competitors might be more than also-rans.

Honestly, this P.O.S. might cut into existing Windows-only mp3 player sales, but Apple (and Sirius/XM) has absolutely nothing to worry about.

If this was really competition for Satellite Radio, I'd be worried, but I don't think this product is going anywhere. This thing has failure written all over it.

You may be able to stream XM or Sirius...but so what? I have my Helix, which ROCKS, and I have my iPod video, which ROCKS. I'm all set. When I want to listen to just sat radio (which is most of the time), the Helix covers me. When I want to listen to a specific artist from my collection, the iPod covers me.

And I think brown is a very approriate color to this particular piece of...

does it use Windows Media Player 10? you know .. the one that has XM embedded already?

Yawn.

so they entered a already saturated market with a product EXACTLY like everyone else's?

HUH?

oh well billions will let you do that i guess.

Man, who buys a brown of *anything* related to electronics?

And why exactly is this being reported on - because it *doesn't* receive satellite radio?

Here's a newsflash - neither do the new iPod nanos. Where's the article on those? (j/k Ryan)

What? No XM?

No one will beat apple unless their MP3 player offers BJs.

"No one will beat apple unless their MP3 player offers BJs"

I'd buy That for a dollar!

Of course, if Microsoft made it, it would suck your dick for three days then bite down hard and start talking in a man's voice. SucksForSure.

Did you just quote Robocop???

Nice.

I see no reason anybody would buy this over an iPod. The wifi is even a joke when you read about it. keep trying Microsoft

Hey thats trussels job!

oh microsoft
thanks for making apple look better!
u make the word "compeititon" look so easy....
no matter what microsoft puts in its player..i'm not buying it...my ipod rocks!!!! no need for a wanna be ipod
go apple!

I seen this in person for the first time last night... It was actually a cool player...

Don't get me wrong, I still perfer the iPod compared to it, and I always will...

I would have liked it a little more if it wasn't so big!! Its HUGE!
