MSNBC, CBS Radio suspend Imus

| 48 Comments | No TrackBacks

Don Imus on Rev Al Sharpton's showCBS Radio and MSNBC have both said they are suspending Don Imus for two weeks after his reference of the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.”

While CBS Radio issued the suspension without a statement, MSNBC said "our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word."

The suspension begins next Monday so as to air the previously scheduled Imus radiothon in support of the Tomorrow's Children's Fund, the CJ Foundation for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome research and the Imus Ranch planned for Thursday and Friday.

Imus continued to apologize on his show as well as on the Reverand Al Sharpton's own radio show, who also continues to call of Imus' firing.

So what's your feelings on this? Do you think Imus deserves to be fired? And if that does happen, should XM or Sirius offer him a job?

LOL!! What a dipshit! Imus and CBS deserve each other.

I'm sure that asshole Sharpton will make him grovel for a while before moving on to the next pointless topic...

I dont think Imus should have caved! I am sure with this being in the news...and is so Controversial, XM would be the perfect fit for Imus. With Opie & Anthony not being censored anymore...he would be a perfect fit.

That...That's terrible I'm Sorry!

He should go to Sirius, since they have a nasty habit of hiring morons anyways, i.e. Howard Stern.

The guy is a jerk, and Sirius is the only place he should be allowed next.

Does anybody honestly believe that Imus would bring in satellite radio subs? I highly doubt that. His ratings on free radio aren't good. Why would anybody pay to listen to him? I hope he stays with terrestrial. When Stern was on terrestrial it was almost laughable to compare the ratings of the 2 of them. Stern is the biggest draw in radio.

Ask yourself, would you pay to listen to Imus in the Morning?

i'm not a hugh fan of his but if MSNBC broadcast his show he must have some fans .if you look at all the crap sat radio has already picked up ( at least he's in radio )i don't see why xm or sirius wouldn't pick him up .

Imus would bring nobody to satellite. He is such a sad soul. Imus supporters are shouting, "He has a charity!" That "charity" was paid for by his listeners and it's basically a vacation ranch where sick kids come down once in a while. Fire this idiot, not because of his innocent comment, but for calling people "niggers" behind the scenes.

1. Imus is not funny.
2. We ammended the Constitution in 1791 to protect from "abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press."

I gotta echo one of OnA's sentiments, which was "they're gonna fire him for this?!?!?!". It was a comment CLEARLY made in jest, and there's much worse shit being said on a number of other shows on a daily basis... Fired no.. but I think that's what's gonna happen... In terms of Imus on satellite, nay to that.. his best days are behind him..

One of the watercooler answers on the TV station said, "Nah, he shouldn't be fired, give him a job on satellite radio, where he can rant all he wants and nobody will listen."

Reverand Al Sharpton is one of the reasons racism will never go away. If it was a black radio personality who said this we would never heard anything about this. Racism will never go away untill the black person has to follow the same rules as everyone else.

"i'm not a hugh fan of his but if MSNBC broadcast his show he must have some fans ."

Well, yeah, he has SOME fans. STATIC would have SOME fans. He's on MSNBC because simulcasting his radio show is cheaper than having to produce a REAL TV show for four hours per morning.

IT's not about liking or hating him or his show. The news has gone crazy over this. It's a sequal to the Michael Richards breakdown. To suspend him for two weeks is insane and talk of him being fired? Come on, I know the climate of radio has changed but this just proves that one mis-step and your out. Forgive and move on Rev. Al, Imus is a cranky old man but the times I have heard him I don't hear him spewing hate on his radio show.

I want Dave Chappell removed from the TV everytime he or anyone on his show Says Honkey or Craker.

Reverse racisam is just as bad as Racisam

2 weeks? Heh. He prolly had a vacation coming up, anyway. Either way, CBS would never fire that unfunny old retard.

Sad as it is, he's their highest rated personality...

They should've kept DLR...

:)

XM 202 with O&A, R&F, and Imus in the afternoons. Hmmm, I'd hate to see him fired, but that could be interesting, or throw him on talk radio XM 165.

When will people learn that they may be held accountable for their actions? Probably when morons stop trying to defend them.

Some people should leave joke-making to actual comedians; otherwise, you may just sound like a fucking racist idiot.

"I want Dave Chappell removed from the TV everytime he or anyone on his show Says Honkey or Craker....Reverse racisam is just as bad as Racisam"

Is it as bad as shitty spelling?

No he should not be fired at all. This really is some PC bull$hit. Sharpton should be shot. Why does anyone listen to this joker?

I completely glazed over that comment, mikehunt. Apparently, I can't read retard very well.

Funny observation that the known Stern fans that visit this site are condemning him - could it be because the I-Man once made life a little rough at DubyaNNNNNNNBC for your radio god?

Puh-lease...if Stern had made this comment, you'd all be facing the other direction.

i was quite shocked when i heard about this. i thought imus was dead.

Dunno how this turned into a Stern defense topi...oops. never mind I just saw who posted.

This isn't the first time Imus has said stuff like this. It may be the first time you've ever heard it, but its not a new occurrence, at all. Imus is known to call people the n-word. Can you say the same for the guy you love to bring up into conversations? Does O&A do it? didn't think so. Stop ASSuming, peter.

with all the reaction this is causing, you wouldve think he called that basketball team a bunch of Sparkling Wiggles.

Ryan,

Why do the niggers think that just because they don't have jobs, that us white folk shouldn't be able to have them?

Lord Westfall

Westfall, thats a pretty bad comment, but I do agree that Its a double standard when it comes to racism, I think that Blacks are more raceist against whites then whites are against blacks, but if a black person calls a whit person a cracker, no one ever says anything about it, but if its the other way around, the lord help us, the whole world is doomed, the media in this country sucks

This entire incident sickens me. It should not even be a blip on the news radar.

Imus's arguably off-color comment is so benign that the popular, vitriolic reaction to it from individuals and the media is what is the actual problem. Al Sharpton is of course at the helm of it all, lapping it up like the all too eager attention whore who thirsts to create racial controversy where there is none.

What I have seen in the past few days from Imus's detractors is best described as a mob of phony, self righteous jackals. What is really surprising is that none of them seem to have the intelligence to examine their own behaviour let alone comprehend that what is at hand here is not a case of bigotry but rather a case of reactionary thoughtlessness.

I long for the day when popular media's ability to express itself is not limited by the smallminded nature of those who deem their offendedness a worthy reason to legally stifle and silence all speech which does so.

Simply put, Imus has absolutely nothing to apologize for in this matter. It is Al Sharpton, Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Whoopi Goldberg, and the many publically decrying this man with their own hypocrisy who need apologize.

If Imus is to be fired over this nonsense then so should his detractors be removed from their places of work.

So much for land of the free and home of the brave. Apparently it's really more like land of the litigious and home of the callow.

If everyone really wants to strive for a better America, it's this type of behaviour that many are all too willing to display that needs to be ended.

I've been a big Imus fan for years, but I did not hear the comments he made. Frankly, race jokes and stereotypes are a big part of the show, and most people can laugh at these and themselves. The spectacle of Imus having to go hat in hand to a race hustler like Al Sharpton, who exploited the long forgotten Tawana Brawley to get headlines, is quite ridiculous, but then again, our country has become one big media circus.

A-MEN Thrawn:

While we're at it, I think we should make Asians build more railroads and bring the Jim Crow laws back. Do the Injuns have any more land to steal?

It's in bad taste but its OK for black men to call black women "nappy-headed ho's". It's not OK for any other colored or noncolored men to call them that name. Even though what Imus said was really in bad taste, why was this news? Why'd he get suspended? Chris Rock gets away with this.

This was just another excuse for all the media whores to come out of the wood work to make a big deal over a non issue. I am so tired of all the politically correct pansies having to complain over mundane issues. It's disgusting and does nothing but perpetuate the sad state of affairs in this country. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are two huge hypocrites and I call for them to leave the public eye since all they seem to do is make themselves look like complete morons. I'd be ashamed of either of them were a representation of my people even better why must there be people like these two in the first place? They only maintain this stupid racial issue so they can have job.

Yeah, because white people should talk about the difference between niggers and black people. That bit could have only come out from a black comic. Although, I do agree that the "nappy headed hos" comment was harmless. This has been blown way out of proportion, but the guy is an idiot that has called people niggers behind the scenes. I don't know. If he gets fired for this, I guess it would be great since more people will be aware of how horrible regular radio is and get satellite.

My previous comment said that the reason MSNBC runs Imus's show is because it's cheaper than having to produce a REAL TV show. This is from the New York Times:

"If the calculation were purely financial, both CBS Radio and MSNBC would have strong incentive to keep the program.

"Beyond the rights fee it pays to CBS Radio to simulcast the program — about $4 million a year — the MSNBC show costs the network only about $500,000 a year, which is a modest expense for a three-hour daily program. If the channel had to replace the show with three hours of regular news coverage, 'it would cost far more money than that to produce' an MSNBC executive said."

"Imus is known to call people the n-word."

Links? Facts? Didn't think so.

Stop speculating on the man's personal life and look at his professional broadcasting history - 2 supposedly 'racist' comments in 20 years does not equal a firing, sorry.

Imus was trying to be funny - quoting a line from a Spike Lee film - and failed. Give the guy an extended vacation and be done with it.

My observation was simply that the known Stern worshipers on this site were pretty quick to bash Imus, no doubt taking the lead from their radio god himself. Meanwhile, Howie's been getting away with murder for years simply because of the color of the woman in the dunking booth. She rolls her eyes or says, "Now now, Howard...", and everything's okay.

Gimme a break.

"Links? Facts? Didn't think so."

hahaha. okay. Here is the link via NPR is you'd like:

BROOKE GLADSTONE: Earlier this summer one of Imus's second bananas, Sid Rosenberg, made a joke in shockingly bad taste about tennis players Serena and Venus Williams. Imus fired him. And then promptly re-hired him. He explained that back in the bad old days of his own drug and alcohol abuse, people gave him about 50 second chances. Imus is all about forgiveness. But he admitted in an interview with Mike Wallace a few years back that he hired his staff to make racist jokes.

MIKE WALLACE: You told Tom ANDERSON, the producer, in your car coming home that Bernard McGuirk is there to do "nigger" jokes.

DON IMUS: Well I've n-- I never use that word.

MIKE WALLACE: Tom?

TOM ANDERSON: I'm right here.

DON IMUS: Did I use that word?

TOM ANDERSON: I recall you using that word.

DON IMUS: Oh, okay, well then I used that word, but I mean-- of course that was an off the record conversation-- [LAUGHTER]

MIKE WALLACE: The hell it was!

Please don't try to call me out again. Thank you.

is = IF you'd like. durrrrrrrrr

Pete, Imus admitted in calling an intern a nigger on Larry King's show. His excuse was that he was drunk.

couldn't find the transcript for that one, Jorge. I know about that as well.

Does anyone know how his removal from MSNBC today will affect the charities that would have benefitted from the Radiothon. Is Rev. Al going to step up and try to help generate some of this lost revenue for children with cancer - or has he just decided to claim victory and walk away??

we love his show he did not go to far I or my coworkers 200 or more some are black like me we will never put on msnbc see ya.

If CBS radio fires Don Imus they would be caving to manufactured pressure and a campaign of "gotcha" that only cann succeed if they can not step back and see the whole picture.

Imus' remark was insensitive and innapropriate, stop the presses, so what is new here?

I have been listening to his show for a long time. At times he is a complete ass however he is also the real deal, and those that listen to him have overlooked it when his ranting went over the line.

Even though I am no longer fat, I was for many years of my life and I can't tell you how many times he has said innapropriate and downright mean things about fat people, just ask Chris Carlin. It never made me turn off the radio, or ask for his dismissal or anything such as that.

I realize that not being a black person I cannot say with any credibility how a black person would feel after hearing his comment.

I do feel nevertheless that a man who has done so many good things in his career should not have to be put through the wringer just to satisfy an angry mob.

I will never again buy any products from those advertisers who gave litle thought to their withdrawal.

I hope CBS does not fold to that phony racist Al Sharpton like MSNBC did. I will never watch that station or channel 4 again.

I am a cancer victim, diabetic anf recently declared legally blind. I am 54 yeras old and understand the terrible nature of the Imus statement directed at the great young ladies of Rutgers. Looking at what he has done to help cancer patients and in particular the children should not be dismissed. I think that if cbs executives, Imus and minority leadership get together that it is a tremendous opportunity to make a signicant difference in what is broadcast over the air waves. I am totally disgusted with msnbc and was a regulat viewer. That will change. No longer will I watch. I know I am no one important and just one voice. But, I have lived the life, walked the walk and realize what cancer does not just to the victim but the people who he or she loves. Thankyou for the time. Keep Imus on and take the opportunity to make a big change for the better.

We must realize that MSNBC is a far left "progressive" network (can you say Obermann???)....in other words....they think there are too many of us, and not enough of them....boycott MSNBC!!!!!!!!!! Let"s hit them in their sponsorships.........

Don Imus, who appears to be a shriveled and sour old man, gets his jollies by saying vile things about talented young women (not all of them black) who have no voice there to defend them. So they are all "nappy-headed 'hos'"? I wonder how hard Imus would laugh if some would-be "wit" called his daughter the same thing. I fervently hope that the days of dirty old men like Don Imus, Howard Stern (and their ilk) hogging the early morning airwaves will soon be over.

CBS must be owned by a bunch of balless pussy's. black's like chappell can call white's honky's, cracker, etc. and nothing is said, but you listen to the biggest bigots and shit disturbers around, jesse jackson and rev. sharpton and cut your own throat by firing Imus. you deserve what you get and i hope you go under. this political correct crap has got to stop. it is making the american people so thin skinned they can't even think for themselves. all of you involved in firing Imus go to hell.

what imus said was wrong
but he should not have been fired
i will boycott any one who has
commercials on cbs radio or television

I think Imus was railroaded. Black commedians are allowed to make derogatory "white" & "black" statements constantly and that is acceptable. No one complains, no one gets fired, no one apologizes. Ever watch Dave Chappelle? Has Jesse Jackson apologized to the Duke University young men? I think he & Sharpton are only there to jump on the band wagon any time they can against white people. The facts in any case are strictly optional...they just want to be out in front beating the drum & to draw negative attention to any racial issue. When the facts come out they slither away. If it were truely the issues they would have been leading the protests a long time ago against the vile language & racial slurs made from those entertainers & comedians who make millions from doing far worse than Imus ever did. I think MSNBC & CBS were wrong in firing Imus. They are holding Imus to a journalistic standard that has not existed in this country since the 50's - 60's...but not holding the black rap singers or comedians to the same standard and I am angry. I think we should boycott MSNBC, CBS, & ALL the sponsers who were so quick to pull their advertising off the Imus show. I think we should call our cable & satellite companies & request they remove MSNBC & CBS. Let Procter & Gamble products sit on the shelves. Then we'll see who has the last say.

well this country is more devoted to minority then majority latinos having thier work boycot day nothing was changed i think a white american work boycot day should happen guess what would happen the country ? would come to a freeze hell most black folks have it 365 days a year so that wouldnt be an issue this country is going to the dogs as one past russian czar said americia will be commuist and not a shot will be fired besides im not racist as i hate all mankind.the only species that does not give back to nature but destroy it and guys like al sharpton need not to be even spoken about this is what he wants he is suposed to be a man of god. number one thats a joke he usually runs his mouth and most of the time ends up with a foot in it...just plain no class. this black america is your hero? wonder why your dead last in every nation of the world even in south americian countries the darker is allways looked down upon SAD FACT OF LIVE there will allways be underdogs this title has been chosen for the black race
