NAB is "astonished" by DOJ approval of Sirius/XM

NAB vs Satellite Radio

The National Association of Broadcasters is disgusted. They're hurt. They're angry! And quite possibly even... astonished!
"We are astonished that the Justice Department would propose granting a monopoly to two companies that systematically broke FCC rules for more than a decade. To hinge approval of this monopoly on XM and Sirius's refusal to deliver on a promise of interoperable radios is nothing short of breathtaking."
That's the statement issued by the NAB following the DOJ's approval of the Sirius-XM merger.
What's even more astonishing is the NAB's reasoning for expressing such dismay: breaking FCC rules and under delivering on promises. C'mon, is that the best you've got Dennis? You've had 400 days to prepare for this moment... and you give us that?

Wait... have any radio stations broken any FCC rules? Like maybe... indecency rules? Using your logic, all those nasty rule-breakers shouldn't be allowed to merge either. I'm sure your members would love to hear that bit of knowledge.

The NAB should stick to calling bloggers "nattering" instead, it's far more effective.

The Least Suprising Story of the Day

I mean really, I thank them for mentioning me in that little thing where they mentioned Orbitcast comments. But really, REAL MEN DON'T CRY!!!!

The day they pay royalty fees is the day i listen to maybe some words these guys say.

I expect to see the HD-DVD player/ HD Radio bundle at Best Buy by next week.

Ryan, they don't use words, they just cry, make excuses, and babble. Words usually means something coherent has to come out of it. The NAB doesn't even know what coherent means.

I hope the FCC still has the common sense to block this thing, there is still hope.

I like how people who break FCC rules in a dirty way are running their mouths. What's worse, smoking pot or buying pot? According to the government, buying.

The common sense to block this thing?

This isn't the Soviet Union buddy. There is no reason why it shouldn't go through. The hurt feelings of fanboys doesn't equate to a monopoly.

OMG -

WAT A COMEBACK!!!

TY orbitcast - for doing such a great job of covering this thing....

It won't be blocked. There has NEVER been a DOJ approval of a merger and the FCC denying it. They MAY put some restrictions on it, but no denying it.

Hey David Rehr, maybe you can go back to selling beer....... hahahaha
The NAB spent about $8 MILLION lobbying against this merger.......lol

Then get rid of the CLONES O&A.

Hey Ryan ,

How about a picture of the Sirius dog , taking a dump on a picture of David Rehr ? Can you work some photo magic ?

As "fans" of sat radio at least get the facts right.

It's NOT a merger. Sirius is buying xm.

-AND-

TIme to upgrade to HD radio. No support to any monopoly.

"DOJ Approves Sirius/XM Merger"

"The statement also dismisses claims by HD Radio that a merged Sirius and XM would exclude competing technology from car stereos and other equipment."

"Lack of interoperable radio key to XM+Sirius merger approval"

"In an unusually sideways argument from the US Justice Dept. this afternoon, the fact that both XM and Sirius satellite radio services have been unable to create an interoperable radio device for the foreseeable future, has been put forth as evidence that a merger between the two entities -- which the DoJ approved this afternoon -- would not reduce competition between them."

The fuckers at iBiquity are packing their bags, now! Struble will have a complete meltdown!

Earlier today I sent the NAB an email. I think it read something like "suck on it, douchebags!"

The best part of the merger is Rehr's humiliation.

seriously though -- u have to admit, it doesn't make a lot of sense to use the 'interoperable radio' argument as reason for approving the merger. DOJ is basically saying, "break the rules and we'll use your rule breaking to legitimize a merger!" kinda whack.

I think the FCC would prefer caving to the NAB, but can't at this point. They may deny the merger by approving it with conditions so silly, neither XM nor Sirius will want to move forward with it.

I've had XM for over 6 years...if this merger goes through, I think we will see more drastic changes from the perspective of XM subscribers than Sirius subscribers. Sirius will gut XM like a fish. It will be Sirius Radio with what someone thinks is the "best of XM" -- MLB and a few stations. Just my opinion and I hope I'm wrong...

>> Sirius is buying xm.

Sirius can't pay its bills as it is; they aren't buying a damned thing.

The Sirius shareholders are giving up half their equity to get XM. A hell of a good deal, if it is possible for a "good deal" to involve receiving shares in a satellite radio company.

Stack Pointer, wait, I thought the merger wasnt going through?

Oh and the cost savings of the two at least will be the $4B that im sure will cause a few buy backs over the next few years.

Don't believe me? Stay short on Sirius and XM until 2010. I'll stay long. You don't have to match my total position, you can just buy with whatever money your mom gives you for lunch that you dont use on those jujy fruits.

I'm serious, put your money where your mouth is. It's no big deal to talk smack online, throw that cash into an account to cover your short position. and well see what happens.

"Lack of interoperable radio key to XM+Sirius merger approval"

What a twist. The key is its availability to consumers!

IMHO, Stack wins this thead with his "if it is possible for a "good deal" to involve receiving shares in a satellite radio company." comment! Best line in a bad day for dual-subs.

I expect FCC approval this week or as fast as they can because the radio was made.

Never did i think the NAB was against the merger and i still do not think they are.
They would love to have Sat Radio as a member. They had to put up a fight to look good for the members. They know sat radio is not going away so having it as a member is better than nothing.
Anybody else think we will see Sirius as a member?

John, the NAB exists for its members (current) and they are terrestrial radio. I recall an interview with Mel over a year ago, where he said he approached the NAB about membership and was denied. They weren't interested.

"RonAndFezNoonTo2:40" Haha... points for originality :-) But 2:42 would probably be a little more acurate.

If there's one thing about this process that made me pro-merger, it was the realization that Clear Channel and the NAB were dead-set against it. From my perspective, anything those b**tards thought stunk were probably the best thing since sliced bread. This whine just confirms that feeling for me.

Now if I can get baseball on my Sirius units, I'll be one happy boy!

After 400 days of reading all short interest loser BS comments, finally you can all eat your shorts!
Don't bet against Mel! You bunch of F-kin losers. Time to crawl back under your short rocks.

Thank you Orbicast for always providing the information I needed to stay positive.

Long time SIRI XMSR investor.

Ryan, funniest picture of all time.

I wonder if Rehr actually can do that without a helmet?
