New Anti-Merger Satellite Radio Advocacy Group

Satellite RadioEnter the "Consumer Coalition for Competition in Satellite Radio" ("C3SR"), a group of law students at the George Washington University who have formed the organization in protest to XM and Sirius Satellite Radio merger rumors.

"The competitive duopoly in satellite digital radio created by the FCC in 1997 is clearly at risk," according to Chris Reale, one of C3SR's founding members. "If the only two companies operating in the satellite radio industry are permitted to combine, consumers not only will lose their choice, but they will be totally at the mercy of a monopoly provider."

While I agree with his statement and it's admirable that a consumer advocacy group was formed (albeit, based on rumors) I'm not exactly sure what affect they could have. It's the response of the subscribers themselves (would it be a positive or negative response? no one really knows what would happen yet) that would make the most difference.

While this is good that they formed this I think the FCC would block any attempt anyways, especially after what the chairman said.

The USA needs more Attorneys. The second oldest profession, and very similar to the first.

Judging by NAB complaining and how the FCC neutered all our FM transmitters, I imagine a lot of red tape would magically appear the moment Sirius and XM tried to merge. They're both claiming to be in the black now, so why bother? Since their satellites and receivers are so different, there wouldn't be many costs to consolidate, at least until the existing birds fall out of the sky.

The first is waaaay more honest and deserving of respect. That being said, how do we know these guys aren't affiliated, or are taking $$$ from, the NAB?

They are lawyers in training, after all...

I mean, who has that much time on their hands to be involved with this? Law school is supposed to be hard.

Just wondering...

Sounds like something as stupid as the NAB would try. Hiring a "rent a crowd" like these phony "protesters" is right up their alley.

Let's see where the money comes from, shall we??

Real Attorneys don't go to GWU. They must have been thrown out of their Community Colleges.

Quick...want to guess who clerked last summer for a firm that represents the NAB?

Was an XM subscriber for over two years. Decided to try Sirius. Big mistake. The "on air personalities" never shutup. Why would I want to pay for that. Going back to XM...
