On June 29th, it's all going to change
But many influentials will go out and buy the iPhone on that day. The people who give tech advice to their friends. The ones who everyone turns to for advice on the latest gadget. Those influentials will be waiting on line for a $600 phone, and will love every minute of it.
Sirius and XM are not in the radio business, they're in the desire business. And when thousands of influentials with their iPhones in hand hit the streets, and show their friends what they can now do, there will be one device that people will desire.
On June 29th, the mobile industry will be forced to react to the iPhone, and as such will be releasing their own convergence devices (they're already working on them, in fact). All these new music players/smartphones will try to take it a step further than Apple... and that includes seamlessly integrating into your car.
And it's less than four weeks away. Don't think it'll be disruptive? Watch these commercials and tell me otherwise.

While I love the look and promise of the Iphone, I'll be waiting for Version 2 to pick one up and finally dump Verizon.
I generally don't buy first generation hardware. Let the early adopters endure the inevitable issues common with any first gen release...

The iPhone has WiFi and so will other convergence phones. With WiFi you will be able to listen to Sirius Internet Radio from anywhere in the world that you can find a wireless internet connection. I think people fail to realize that the iPhone will enable Sirius. It is a platform for listening to Sirius at no cost to Sirius. I can't wait to get one and leave the heavy laptop at home when traveling.

The commercials rock, but I think the cost of the phone and services will hinder adoption.
I don't get the whole watching movies on a small screen like that. I have video ipod and use it only for music in my car. I also have a dvd player in my car stereo, but have never watched anything on it. I wonder how many people do that. amp'd just filed chapter 11 because the whole video on your phone thing isn't something people just gotta have.
The gps is definitely cool and the web is great too, but how long does the battery last with all of the functionality?

I was skeptical about sirius until the price came down. now that I have it I couldn't live without it. being freed from the commercials that have invaded every aspect of our lives is awesome.
iPhone and the accompanying services need to become affordable before the masses will adopt...

Yea, I'd switch to shitty GSM Cingular for THAT thing. Kind of lame it doesn't work on the best nework, Verizon.

Hey I didn't know we could have flame wars over cell carriers here. How's that bluetooth functionality working out for you on Verizon Steve? Crippled? Yeah, some network.

What I thought was strange is that it says "Minimum two year" deal required.

Had verizon for years. when i moved to my new house, could not use my verizon phone for crap. had to stand out in my backyard to use my phone. I now have cingular/ATT and can not only use my phone in my house, but also in my basement.

I think maybe YOU'RE a cripple and cannot figure out out to read a message board and follow directions? Not only is my BT NOT crippled, but my phone and my Dell Axim are fucking LOVERS. That's right, I'm on the network and I don't pay out the ass for the data plan either.

Perfectly normal, there's going to be places some work and others don't. Even T-Mobile probably has spots around me that'll out perform other carriers. Actually, if I HAD to go with another carrier I'd consider AT+T/Cingular ahead of some of my other choices. It's just that Verizons overall coverage is impressive and since everyone I know has it it's the best for me.
The exclusivity with one carrier for iPhone=bad for consumers.

Sat rad are far beyond the "desire" point. Its old technology, been around since 03. Its more of a commodity now and as such its really not competitive with the IPhone or IPOD or Ianything.
Its going to find its nitch in cars, as part of the cars entertainment system that comes with it. Most people that buy cars arent 20 years old and spend their time on computers downloading music or instant messaging, they simply want to get in the car and hear news, sports, music, or entertainment. Sat rad meets that need. I-stuff doesnt unless you are young. Generally young people dont buy new cars, or if they do they are smaller so sat rad may not even be in that market.

I've been listening to Sirius on my PPC-6700 (Sprint) for quite a while now. I can listen through wifi, or with my unlimited data plan. I also watch movies on it. Oh and sometimes I make calls on it too. Basically, my phone does everything the iphone will do. But the memory doesn't compare.

I continue to be disappointed at just how heavily articles like this have bit at the flawed notion that the iPhone competes with XM or Sirius. It is NOT competition, but it's an enabler and an enhancement. Enabler in the sense that I can listen now to XM in places I couldn't, by using the wireless internet to get XM Radio Online when I don't have line of sight of the sky, in a coffee shop or office for instance. Enhancement in the same way that my current iPod enhances my XM experience: I can take the new music I discover from XM and store it on my iPhone.
There may be something behind the thought that iPhone will set a new standard in "cool factor" for portable devices, but only to the detriment of devices that it competes with. The efforts to include satellite radio receivers in those devices may make sense, but the Karmazin spin from the merger talk has hid the simple fact that, in the short and medium term, it is too much of a stretch to say they truly compete.

Which, of course, is why these two companies should be working on their businesses, not wasting their time and money on this rediculous merger.
