Opie & Anthony on CBS Radio is paying off for XM

Opie and AnthonySo said XM Satellite Radio CEO Hugh Panero during yesterday's conference call:

"Moving to an update on the Opie and Anthony show, the syndication thus far has been a major coup for XM. Its availability in seven major markets at launch and the addition of 12 more markets have expanded the show’s exposure, XM’s branding, and O&A’s exclusive content. Within the last 90 days, customers citing O&A as a reason they subscribe to XM have doubled.

Moreover, O&A broadcast radio ratings are on the rise, and thus we expect the XM brand, which is embedded in those broadcasts, to drive continued awareness and ultimately attract more subscribers desiring XM’s exclusive O&A content."

There's something to be said (at least from a chest-thumping standpoint) for the ability of "shock jocks" to convert their audience to subscribers. Maybe they don't get a piece of the action (maybe they should) but the bragging rights are there.

We've seen the influence that Howard Stern has had on Sirius subscribers. If Opie & Anthony really want to show their arch rival how much clout they hold, it behooves them to do the same for XM.

According to Panero, it sounds like it's working.

Hoo! Hoo! Failures.

Hugh Panero said that the number of people that are buying radios because of Opie and Anthony has doubled. My question is how many were buying because of them before? His statement doesn't mean much without knowing that.

But yet, people will still complain.

Rising ratings and citing O&A has doubled...yup their failing. Prediction of a future comment:

Stern Zombie: "They are only getting ratings because Howard isn't on FM anymore. If he was and O&A were on FM as well; then they could succeed. But because Howard isn't there they are failing."

Hoo Hoo - I can't comment on this from the hamptons, Robin

O-A are the the bigest personalitys to hit radio ever!

why would anyone listen to hoo hoo well they cant he's too busy going to the hamptons

i mean have you seen the bbboys numbers on radio?
in the july 25 ny daily news they had a report on people listening at any given moment. the bbboys killed mother fer!!!
look at these numbers outta NY.

stern last year 229,700
DLR-40,500
O-A-67,700
we killed baby we killed remember we always win in the end baby.

opie and anthony WE NEVER TAKE VACATIONS!!!!!

sternfan73, can I buy pot from you?

The fact that O-A listeners and pests keep bringing up Howard proves that he is numero uno.

Opie and Anthony are kings without a kingdom.

The thing is they talk about Howard after every move they make. Howard rarely does this. He has mainly mentioned them in passing while O&A go on for 45 minutes to an hour when they talk about Howard. To deny being 0w3nd is ridiculous.

On Hugh's comments. It's great that O&A are increasing exposure and brand but the problem is that it's doing NOTHING for the number of subscribers. Sirius has trounced and embarassed XM in net adds and it's absolutely due to Howard effect. Previously growth had been all in XM's favor. Howard has most certainly been a factor in reversing XM's advance.

Wow..its funny how they do not even give the number that they doubled.
"customers citing O&A as a reason they subscribe to XM have doubled."

from what?

Especially on the day that XM announces a wider loss, etc, etc...Sounds like spin to me...

"opie and anthony WE NEVER TAKE VACATIONS!!!!!"

That's why they completely hid the week that Howard first aired. Of course they don't take vacations. They can't afford to! With the shitty contracts they sign, they have to work 9 to 5!

It may be increasing exposure but it's not adding any subs, just look at their numbers.

>> With the shitty contracts they sign, they have to work 9 to 5! >>

Yeah, that's the reason. :-P

How about because they're not completely burned out on their careers yet, and they actually *enjoy* doing radio?

I still don't see why people compare O&A to Stern. Stern was on radio for 25 years. O&A have been OFF terrestrial for 4 years. How can anyone expect them to have higher ratings than what Stern would/should have? Or even higher ratings than Imus at this point.

That being said, O&A should stop comparing themselves to Stern. Maybe then these tiresome comparison battles will end.

The last line of your post states "So far it appears to be working." Really? Is that why subs are down so much, because O&A are reeling them in? This company had 6 million subscribers at the end of 2005 and JUST passed the 7 million mark yesterday. They were suppossed to have 9 million by the end of this year, but guidance has was lowered to 8.5 million. Now that has been lowered to a "range" from 7.7 million to 8.2 million. Yea, O&A are reeling them in. It really seems to be working so far. Give me a break.

The CBS show is unlistenable with all the friggin' commercials.

Frank Z, there is no stern effect, remember? Shouldn't xm's sub predictions for Q3 be more like 7.3 to 7.4 million? I could see a possible 7.5 mill. But why do they think they can draw over 800 thousand this quarter? This is only by memory that they had 6.9 at Q2's end.

OA are finally establishing themselves. but why did it take so long? They have been around for some time. Maybe its cause of that big nosed Jew from long island.

Orbitcast = XMcast: Apparently the wording of that last line can be miscontrued as something I wasn't trying to say. I changed it from "So far, it sounds like it's working." to "According to Panero, it sounds like it's working."

O&A have yet to prove whether or not this strategy will actually work or not. Saying that it has "doubled" is an easy thing to say if the number is very low.

Last I remember, 4% of new XM subscribers cited O&A as a reason for subscribing. I'm not sure if that has changed to 8% or not. Time will only tell.

sorry guys for my last post, for some reason i thought Q3 but xm's predictions were for years end. my bad

taking the word of a man who has now lowered guidance TWICE this year, really tells me he does not know what the hell is good or bad for his company

NOBODY and I mean NOBODY can seriously accuse Ryan of being XM biased. he owns both and he touts both XM and Sirius. I bet, and I have not checked, but I bet if you counted up the posts here they are pretty evenly split. He is all over hte Stilletto thing. Fact is XM puts out more press releases than Sirius, but even still, I KNOW this week there have been more posts about Sirius and that includes all of the XM news that has come out.

You can hate XM and O&A but do not let that Stern Zombie-ness cloud your opinion about this site. Just because someone does not post 100% Sirius and 100% Stern does not make them all about XM.

Se the problem you have is that today is Friday so no live Stern for you eh? Is he on his long ass Hampton's vacation yet? And don't ramble on about how he has a better contract. That may be, but Stern's Contract and O&A's contract has nothing to do with us... As listeners we should want as much live programming as possible.

I just counted and as of this time, the front page has 20 posts. 9 are about Sirius and 11 about XM. There was a lot of news about XM (New exec and quarterly reports) and it is STILL almost even, so don't bitch about Orbitcast. you are not going to find better info about SatRad anywhere else... Especially not on the SFN, dumba**!

The Squeaky Wheel, you have a great argument until you brought programmin content into by slamming Howard and Sirius. Howard had a great show today I do not see any Sirius fans bitching about it here. It is sad that when Howard takes a friday off the people that bitch about it most are XM fans. That is sad.

this morning was the friday show.its live with john hien , bababooey and ralph.

xm gross subs-926,281
xm deactivate-528,269
xm net subs-398,012

the syndication is a coup for us. o-a as a reason they have subscribe to xm have doubled.

huge must be doing some booey math .we gained a sub and o-a gained a sub. but we lost a couple of subs.but o-a gained a listner.and yes i mis spelled huge name

O&A don't talk about Stern as much as some people would believe. Then again, a lot of people believe anything.

Brian, I will believe the O&A comment but you have to believe that us Howard fans don't care about fridays. If he takes off so be it there is much more on his 2 (TWO) channels not to mention the rest of the service to keep us content.

I've cancelled two receivers in the past month. Only to activate 1 more at the same time, with another one coming off 3 free months in about a month.

Transfers are also counted even though they are also counted in the additions also.

I bet if Ryan removed some users from here that posted one under 1 name, 3-5 others would be removed at the same time because of posting under mult. names.

NOTE: To someone who says that we talk about howard and that he's our number 1 target. I have a question for you......

WHY DID YOU(A HOWARD FAN) CLICK THIS ARTICLE AND COMMENT ABOUT O&A? If O&A didn't mean anything to you and was a non-issue, then why are you here????
But wait.....your here because you care about O&A and their successes as of late.

>> I bet if Ryan removed some users from here that posted one under 1 name, 3-5 others would be removed at the same time because of posting under mult. names.

I bet if we removed the Sirius defenders and the XM defenders, this would work out for all sides, regardless if they liked it or not.

And by we, I mean Ryan, typo in that post.

Only bad thing about that is that he may lose visitors if he did that and advertisers like to know the demo and visitor counts of a website before they invest in it.

I must admit that i'm rather annoyed. I may have a fanboyish feel in a way but in my non-fanboy posts I get attacked with an "opposing" post(ex. top 10 hardware story with a comment by sternfan73).

Before then I really didn't want to come back to read what someone would write after reading my post in this thread, because people are so predictable here. Thats the part thats so annoying.

i did not attack you in the other post. you said it did not count wal-mart sales.i said like it would make a diffrence.

WAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!

>> WHY DID YOU(A HOWARD FAN) CLICK THIS ARTICLE AND COMMENT ABOUT O&A? If O&A didn't mean anything to you and was a non-issue, then why are you here????

You're right, it's mostly about smashing O&A and their recent success - there's been no Stern-specific news of late on this site, so apparently they're getting restless & agitated.

If everyone would comment strictly on the posts related to their satellite service of choice, this site might be somewhat less chaotic and nasty at times...

i love to come on here and defend stern & everything sirius.and will do so as long as the moderator is fine with it.i've been called idiot several times and it doesn't bother me.its just good old fashoned fun.

btw pete. just last week there was a story about the stern film festival winner and people went on there to bash stern.

also although i dont care for their show i did respect them for being on sat.radio.then they went back to old boring radio. to me thats selling out and i lost repect for them.i know it opens up a lot of exposure for them but hugh and even O&A should of gone out there and sold themselves to the country.

>> btw pete. just last week there was a story about the stern film festival winner and people went on there to bash stern. >>

I don't advocate that either, because ultimately it brings the trolls out of the floorboards.

I posted under that article, but it was to defend an anti-O&A comment, which always seem to manifest themselves no matter what the subject.

>> to me thats selling out and i lost repect for them >>

Yup, $500 mil is good ol' blue-collar radio, right?

not $ but content wise.they can go make kazillon dollars. look at leno in the 80s he was one of the funniest comics out there then he took over the tonight show and he not as good because hes gotta sell to people in middle america.

Bad example - Leno still does standup. Care to try another?

an example not a great example but it was an example.

hugh said the numbers doubled. ha! if only 100 people signed up for xm before, then that means they only added 200 new subs.

so all these people signed up to xm for o&a, then heard how crappy the last 2 hours of the show is, then cancelled. that explains the 500k churn last qtr.

my question is...if the first 3 hours of their show sucks, why in the world would you pay $12.95 a month to listen to the last 2 hours?

I just canceled my xm subscription, why should I pay for o&a when I can get them for free. I'm on the road from 6:30am to 8am and they just do their clean show. I get to catch a half hour of their "dirty" show on the drive home. Not worth it.
