Orbitcast in the LA Times (and the flip side of the suspension)

Viva La Revolution!I had a nice conversation with Jim Puzzanghera of the Los Angeles Times over the XM subscriber backlash yesterday. A conversation which led to a very well written article:

"The reaction is mind-blowing," said Ryan Saghir of North Branford, Conn., who runs a blog about satellite radio called Orbitcast. "One of the main attractors to satellite radio is the unregulated content. Once you take away that … you're going to have some upset subscribers."

Even more impressive (at least to me) is that a commenter was quoted in the article:

"I will not support a company that has decided the one true reason they exist no longer matters," wrote one poster on Orbitcast.

Now I wasn't kidding about the mind-blowing part. This is the highest amount of attention I have seen since the Sirius-XM merger announcement (and it's a record for Orbitcast... thankfully I'm running on good strong servers).

The old adage of "any news is good news" sometimes still runs true, and I think it will in this case, if XM/Sirius can handle the situation correctly. This suspension has brought to light the differences of satellite radio versus terrestrial radio, the topic of social responsibility in the media, and (most notably) the regulation of free speech. Imus, JV & Elvis and Opie & Anthony have collectively made the public question what exactly they want to be "allowed" to listen to, although maybe not in the most optimal of ways.

People are actually thinking about this topic, rather than letting the special interest groups dictate it for them. That's important in today's media landscape.

In the long-run this level of attention may actually serve the satellite radio industry, and the "shock jocks" that work for them, quite well. Through adversity comes strength. XM and Sirius now just need to spin this increased attention in their favor.

But for the next 28 days, well... viva la revolution!

brown noseer

kidding

it is mind blowing
that many people would cancel like that
and break their radios when they weren't even fired yet.

life gave bob levy censorship

he cant say hediumisum
lampginellie

sternfan, look at the precedents - when, in recent memory, has a 'suspension' ever been carried to term and the DJs returned to the air?

They're as good as toast unless the mass cancellations sway XM's decision.

well thats dutch door action.

they suspend o/a
fans feel they will be fired
cancel subs
xm only suspends them never
ment to fire them
o/a come back as heros
pest do justice

and they still live in fantasyland

I strongly disagree with the idea that the only true reason for satellite radio's existence is shock-jock radio, or more broadly, the broadcasting of whatever anyone hired by XM chooses to put out there at any given point in time. To me, and many people, it's about many other things (diversity in music and talk content, programmed playlists, reception all over the country, etc). XM setting a standard does not remove all of those advantages.

That article is on Drudge frontpage as well.
so more people are going to start to see what a wonderful little blog this is.

nice job Ryan.

congrats to Orbitcast...moving up in the world

When will ANY of these stories get it right, though?? O&A were NOT suspended for their "crude comments" on Condi Rice and the First Lady....they were suspended for not taking the matter seriously! If, in the end, we find out that XM asked them to take the matter seriously, apologize and move on, and O&A decided to linger on the subject and make fun of their management, then I've got to side with XM: if my boss tells me not to do something, and I do it...I deserve a slap on the wrist (which this suspension is).

If they really are fired, then XM must have felt strong enough that O&A were never going to give management the respect they requested. This is NOT a "freedom of speech" issue. This is a corporate morals issue. Regardless of what you think, XM is a corporation and their biggest concern is their bottom line. They have the right to censor anything they feel may hurt their bottom line. "Freedom of speech" is about protection from the government when you say "Bush is a jackass", it is not protection from your boss when you say it, or say that their "rules are dumb".

Equating SAT radio with shock jocks is a huge insult to the quality of the service.

O&A is the last reason to subscribe to XM.

60 Commercial free music channels
Coast to coast coverage
Digital sound
All baseball
All football
All hockey
All News outlets
Great Comedy

And the list goes on and on ...

I don't think XM will lose 15,000 subs for more than 3 months.

So what - we always knew that shock jocks can't say everything that enters their warped little minds.
People don't want to hear that crap anyway.

Wake up people.

Thank you and everyone else for your support. I've canceled my XM account and sent an individual email to all of the XM advertisers. I signed up for XM to hear uncensored comedy, talk and music. XM has made it's message clear: they are advertising "unleashed" but instead are delivering the paying customers a neutered product.

The whole "respect for management" arguement is rediculous. They are shock jocks. Part of their Schtick is to rail against the "man". They do it, Stern does it, Jay Leno does it on a nightly basis. It's part of what makes them popular. If management played it right they could really make this work for them. Bring them back early siting "customer feedback and advitising and fan response" or whatever, and then allow O&A to declare "victory" and bash them even more.

I also dont agree. XM has to compete in the marketplace for the few americans willing to pay for radio. It dosent strike me as a blow to free speach that O & A got benched for 30 days. What ever happened to the rights of the company? What if O & As freedom of speach is only free to them, while costing the company that gave them voice in the first place millions in bad press, and turning off a ton of new subcribers. All this in a landscape where new subcribers are hard to come by. What ever happened to XMs right to compete.

If this was goverment censorship tryin to move in on Sat. radio id be with you. But this is not the goverment. This wasnt an act of congress. Its the marketplace. Opie and Anthonys rights do not outweight XMs. period

Nice Ryan,

Can I have your autograph, preferably attached to CC and bank account statements?

If you listen to the clip in question...they never didn't take the issue seriously. They just talked about the Imus and JV and Elvis situation and the climate of radio in general. Somethign they have been doing for weeks. They never even mentioned their issue. So even if that is XM's excuse...its weak at best.

my only concern now is the "POWER" this gives to Howard Stern. When his contract with Sirius does run out. will he say he wants to retire and only 200 million per year will keep him from retirement?

Good...glad to see an impact is being made on many different fronts.

hey SternFan do you have a job? What do you do all day besides post? And your the only person who replies to himself. The first 3 posts on this page are you just talking to yourself. You would think that you would have learned to type by now.

sternfan73,
Not much going on? Or are you just THAT obsessive about O&A that you spend most of your day here? Talk about PATHETIC.. it must suck to not have YOUR show in the news for ANYTHING.

This is a great blog
That i visit daily
I also link people to it
daily
Its awesome
Till you have to read
sternfan73 post his shit
like this.
Its annoying

OMG stop that - for a second there I thought it was actually him!

Honestly, I'm more happy about the comments making it to the article than my own silly little quote. But you can still have my autograph... :)

Also, about the equating of satellite radio to shock jocks - that's DEFINITELY not the case. First and foremost satellite radio is about MUSIC.

But many people see satellite as a "safe haven" for unregulated and unfiltered content. So while Satellite Radio doesn't necessarily equal "shock jocks" - it definitely is part of the overall package.

XM has set a new standard all right.. There is now a bar, lowered for the XM personalities. They are saying don't cross this line.. and what line is it? these guys say "fuck" "shit" and other phrases and things that would make your grandma blush.. and they say it knowing they are free to do so.. or were.. If they come back, what will the company do, sanction what they say.. yes the religeous (far) right is listening to them now (and Howard) and going to pick every little thing they say apart.. and even if they come back they will likely be let go. Their contract renewal is up soon isn't it? that will be XM's excuse for letting them go.. and then the 202 can be called sucks dick because it will... BRING BACK THE GUYS (O&A)...

>> So while Satellite Radio doesn't necessarily equal "shock jocks" - it definitely is part of the overall package. >>

Right, as much as it is being able to hear uncensored versions of my favorite songs.

Satellite became about the 'shock jock' the minute O&A signed with XM, and of course when Howard went to Sirius. People are still obviously very much entertained by this medium - so who are people like Al Sharpton or dare I say even the management at XM - to say that we *can't* enjoy those types of programs?

There's disclaimers up and down the channel warning about foul language, and there's obviously the channel-blocking feature which ANYONE can implement. The Imus situation I could almost understand the concern - it's on the public airwaves for ANYONE to hear. But this is comparable to the Sopranos being canceled a few years back because of the Dr. Melfi rape scene - why wasn't HBO or the show itself in danger of being yanked off the air?

Orbitcast rules
and is blowing up
now that
the bbboys have been
fired or maybe
thats just
a
rumor or something
but who cares
because everyday
on digg
and then gizmodo
and then engadget
Orbitcast has been there
which means
eventually
Ryan's server will crash
or he will pay
very large bandwidth bills

They shouldn't have to apologize for what was said. Thats why they are on a uncencored channel.

and xm shouldn't have to pay them
i
love
the way you
guys like the way i type.

your the best.

and yes i do have a job.
its no where near as exciting as your job.

Yeah, the way you type is really a conversation starter. Perhaps rather than trying to type in a manner that annoys everyone & has them just skip your posts you should try working on your piss poor grammar. Now go to your gas pumping job before mom gets mad.

Well, if it's the FCC and the merger that XM is worried about, our next step is to start writing the FCC to oppose the merger. This way you don't have that complicating the issue.

I am truly sorry it has come to this XM. But by taking the actions that you have, you are giving us no alternative.

You are forsaking the bird you have in your hand (your current subscribers) for the two in the bush (potential subscribers) while shedding your biggest hook and that which truly differentiates you from FM – uncensored music and talk.

Why on earth would I want to pay for FM? Truckers like it because they don’t have to change the station when traveling cross country. But the rest of us can simply go back to FM or spend that $150 - $200 we spend a year on XM subscriptions (I had 2 until 6:30pm Tuesday) on an ipod and itunes and listen to REAL commercial free music.

NHL action? The 'Wings games are now on Free FM here in Detroit as well as the Tigers (MLB) so even though I live in the sticks, I can get them on FM now.

Put 'em back, and we'll just forget this whole thing ever happened. Everyone makes mistakes. You are not FM or AM. I know it's hard not think like them; that's where most of you came from.

In fact, if you do reinstate them immediately, I promise to take even greater action than this to support your proposed merger with Sirius to the FCC.

Live Free or Die.

i know you guys are pissed at me. for pointing out
this n that.i know you guys are going through a bad time.but hey i have good news for you guys in SF.
your boys are going to AM radio. HAVE fun.

Sternfan,

I'm so pleased to
meet
The reincarnation of
Alan Ginsberg.
I hope you are keeping
a record
of your posts.
One day
Publish into a book.
I will buy.
I will read
I will
enjoy.

Look, its not as if XM has drawn the line at a unreasonable mark. You can still have naked girls in the studio. You can still say fuck, shit, cock, piss, pussy and what ever else you can think of. You can still do great radio unequaled to anything you can do on FM or AM. But for the good of the company, your not allowed to use XMs airwaves to talk about rapeing political figures. And your also not allowed to slap the company in the face afterward, The company that took you in when you had no home, and downplay their concern for the bottomline, by brushing them off as just a bunch of uptight pricks that dont understand the artistic value of rape.

fuck O & A, (and all their moron fans) not for their comments about rape, but for tryin to turn XM into the bad guy. Fuck them for tryin to make this a matter of free speech and not what it really is, a matter of bussiness

remember boston
remember sex for sam
of course you dont
it wasn't their fault
remember.
just like now.

Good God !

I just watched video of 17 year old girl being stoned and beaten to death in Iraq on CNN. Watching video of an event like that is way more "damaging" than what Imus, JV & Elvis or O&A could ever say. Why is there no outcry when the "news" shows us stuff like that at 7:15pm ?

because its news.
just like xm suspending greg and tony for not taking the apology sirously

the best part about this story being in the LA times is it will bring new people to the site to read sternfan73's misspelled childish rant's. for those of you new to orbitcast try reading the post from the last 5 or 6 stories and see if you agree that sternfan need to find a girlfriend.

Is it really news ? I bet this happens all the time over there but it's only reported when there is some video of it happening. I bet there were quite a few kids eating dinner with their parents that saw that. They'll need councelling now. Just like the basketball players will need councelling after what Imus said.

By the way, referring to them as Greg and Tony is childish. It's not clever.

sirously? did you mean seriously? you are such a walking stereotype.

duchebag and anal is childish
calling them greg and tony would be honest.
something greg and tony dont know how to do.

its what sells you know like its better to say they were suspended for what happend last week as to say they were suspended for taking the situation lightly.

This is NOT a "freedom of speech" issue. This is a corporate morals issue.
syphix , regardless of the reason ,the customer has the right to complain or cancel their service anytime they disagree with the person or company selling the product.THAT'S CALLED A FREE MARKETPLACE.

Please listen to the audio that supposedly got them suspended and tell me at what point they talk about the XM issue. I just listened to it 5 times and nowhere in there do they even briefly mention their situation. If XM was trying to avoid bad press by suspended O&A then boy did they fuck up. They're getting more negative press about suspending them than they were for the comment. Finally, please stop referring to it as a "rape" comment. Rape was not mentioned AT ALL. They were talking about "fucking." Last time I checked fucking was a lot different than rape. Just some food for thought.

I guess I missed a step while I was working. What does a guy that executed bound homosexuals and political opponents have to do with the Times or the O&A suspension?

This is all about the merger. XM subscribers are already preparing to be screwed should this merger go through. Outside of Stern and football, Sirius has nothing to offer except inferior terrestrial-grade repetitive music formats. So, in addition to the prospects of getting their programming watered down, XM subs now have to deal with the political ramifications of the merger dumbing down programming quality before the damned thing even goes through.

No wonder most XMers hope the merger sinks into oblivion.

All I want to say is someone get these boys a kay-ak!

Isn't it funny how there are about 3-4 Stern fans here posting against O&A... I thought his fanbase was in the millions..
