How can anybody be surprised by this? The rumor has been in just about every newspaper and internet article for at least 6 months. Its been the most written about major media merger rumor in history.
>> whats with the puzzle piece pin on mels jacket? >>
Clearly they were doing a big jigsaw puzzle on the table in the conference room and Mel got a piece stuck to his jacket when he fell asleep during the XM portion of the merger talks.
As if this should be a surprise to anyone... it just proves what I have said it here in the past... satellite radio IS NOT the be all, cure all... Terrestrial HD Radio and Internet Radio already spell the death knell to satellite radio...
So let XM and Sirius twist in the regulatory agency winds and then get buffetted by all the inevitable lawsuits and by the time the merger is finally approved, the only winner will still be Stern and his attorney...
Want to bet on the future? INTERNET RADIO over your cell phone... and pretty much everywhere else...
"Want to bet on the future? INTERNET RADIO over your cell phone... and pretty much everywhere else..."
Wow radio on my phone. What is next a mobile phone that can receive phone calls? Sorry but I use my phone for business. Answer me this how come the NAB doesn't complain about mp3 players and other fm modulators.
No wonder they're smiling. If this merger goes through, these two stand to make buckets of money. The caption should read, "CEOs shakehands in effort to stick it to the consumers." Now look for the higher prices and less channel choices. Satrad will suck if this goes through.
I had no idea this had already happened. I received a newsletter from Kim Komando's web site and just found out. http://www.komando.com/howardstern/
(WARNING: Explicit Emails from STERN viewers on the link...IMAGINE THAT!!!!)
I know for my family we will cancel all of our accounts.
We went with XM radio due to them being the choice that DID NOT have Howard Stern on. We prepaid for the year for all of our radios. I wish we could get the cost of that plus the cost of the radio's back, too. We would NEVER had subscribed if we would have known this would happen. We are only a tiny percentage of $ coming in for these companies...but I refuse to give even the smallest amount of money to Howard Stern. It's really sad. Can someone explain how this isn't considered a MONOPOLY?
I saw Mel Karmazin interviewed on Charlie Rose. I can only envy his success and wish I had the business acumen, interest and fortitude to make these business deals. I see his rationales for merging XM and Sirius from a business standpoint. As someone who subscribes to Sirius and loves it, I would completely enjoy more programming especially with respect to liberal talk radio, PBS and other educational networks. Of course I would love it at a lower price. Personally, although perhaps not a liberal anti-monopoly position, I like the merger and simply hope the diversity of programming on satellite radio remains and averts any subversion of our freedoms. I worry about the ethics of businessmen though as the public interest has been compromised so disastrously in other business arenas.
I would also tell Mr. Karmazin and other media moguls not to worry too much about the internet. There is something to be said for listening to radio AND television in the comfort of a chair. I am online a great deal and every minute that passes, although loving the internet, I hate it at the same time. It is physically very difficult to stay online hour after hour. There comes a time when one MUST get up go for a walk, listen to radio in one's car or elsewhere or watch television not from a microscopic cell phone or the rigidity of a computer but from the comfort of a living space even if it is while one is walking on a treadmill or sitting a couch!

Well, at least Hugh's out.

Hugh was doomed (and the merger assured) once Ryan called for his ouster.

I plan to vote NO when my vote card comes.

Terrestrial HD Radio. So you get CD quality commercials. HD radio is the one that is doomed.
