Radio Execs on Satellite Radio at Bear Stearns Media Conference

RadioThe Bear Stearns Media Conference 2007 kicked off in Palm Beach, and terrestrial radio bigwigs Les Moonves (CEO, CBS Radio) and Bob Neil (President/CEO, Cox Radio) presented today.

Les Moonves essentially steered clear of the satellite radio subject, simply stating, "We're local and [satellite radio is] not." (Les should win an award for that statement, because it's truly perceptive.)

Bob Neil on the otherhand took the subject head on, comparing the XM-Sirius merger to the game of Monopoly (get it?) and equating the merger to the owning of Park Place and Boardwalk with hotels on them.

"It's just too tempting when you have the monopoly," Neil said. "It's just never in the interests of consumers to have a monopoly in one space."

Hello, Pot... meet Tea Kettle. Guess what color you are?

This talk of monopoly by radio broadcasters is ridiculous. Obviously if the merger would present a true monopoly, there would be no competitors. However, the howls of the broadcasters regarding the "monopoly" shows they view themselves as competitors.

Are these guys really pretending that Clear Channel is not a monopoly??? I like how they tried to get one over during the hearing prompting one of the Senators to say, "funny, I thought you were talking about Clear Channel for a second..." CLASSIC!

Ain't this the truth...

The fact that Neil is a hypocrite does not and should not change or detract from the fact that he's excatly right. It IS never in the interest of consumers to have a monopoly. We should use his words against him and against the satellite radio merger, not ignore them because he is as guilty as XM and Sirius will be if it goes through.

Man do you guys have a clue about the radio industry? Clear Channel a monopoly??? Thats just about as ludicrous as saying Sirius and XM would be a monopoly. How may thousands of terrestrial radio stations are out there not owned by Clear Channel? There are about 1 million internet radio stations out there. How many does Clear Channel own? Terrestrial radio competes with Satellite Radio, internet radio, ipod/mp3 players. You can't have it both ways. If Sirius and XM combining is allowed it is absolutely ludicrous to call any radio company a monopoly including Clear Channel. Its all radio.

NAB is scared of satellite radio competition with terrestrial radio. Its that simple. Thats why they are fighting.

Think about this. When every car in this country has a satellite radio factory installed and you are a terrestrial radio company what do you do? There are 230 million cars on the road. If in a decade, half of those cars will be listening to satellite radio and half of those cars will be listening to terrestrial/HD radio, what would you do if you ran a terrestrial radio company or in NAB's case, represented most of the terrestrial radio companies? They could lose half their listeners. So they fight. Is this a surprise to anyone? Competition fights. Its to be expected.

Funny Ryan. Very Funny. Rush Limbaugh in 600+ plus markets is local. RIGHT! Clear Channel and CBS radio broadcasting in every major market in this country and their stations available globally on the internet is LOCAL! SURE LOL!!

Clear Channel owns over 1,500 radio stations. Cbs owns only about 150. Cbs actually owns a small number of stations.

They dont comment on the merger, because they dont care. Thats for the Nab and their member stations, which Cbs is not.

Watch for Cbs to own one or both of the satellite companies in the next 5 years.

Clear Channel owns 1,500 terrestrial radio stations and how many tens of thousands terrestrial radio stations exist today? Clear Channel is not a monopoly. Not even close. CBS owns multiple radio stations in just about all of the top markets in the country. What about ABC radio? How about Citadel? People thinking Clear Channel is a monopoly tells me one thing - People don't know anything about radio.
