Rep. Bobby Rush backtracks on Sirius-XM minority channel support

Rep. Bobby RushSenior House Energy & Commerce Committee member Bobby Rush (D-IL) has backed out of a letter about the Sirius-XM merger he had co-signed to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin only the day before.

Rush, along with Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY), stated in the original letter that they had "fully supported" Sirius' and XM's voluntary commitment to dedicate eight channels for minority ownership.

In a separate letter a day later, Rush now says that he and Towns had a "miscommunication," and that while he advocates setting aside channels for minority ownership, he says eight channels aren't nearly enough.

"While I certainly believe it's important to dedicate channels for minority ownership, I do not believe a mere eight channels out of 300 total in the combined entity represents an 'important and realistic effort to address the dearth of minority ownership'," writes Rush.

"I firmly believe that XM and Sirius can designate far more channels than eight for minority ownership" he added, suggesting a number of channels closer to the 35% of the population that "people of color" represent.

While still a supporter of the merger, Rush says the 8-channel set-aside fails to
satisfy his "advocacy for a more aggressive policy that emulates the real diversity of the American public."

What an ASS?!?

How do they have a miscommunication? Whats so fucking hard to understand about 8 channels. I guess he just got a little confused, DICK!!

He misunderstood, you see, he thought they meant 8 satellites worth of channels for the minority.

How about if xm and siri have a number of minority channels that reflects the ratio of minority channels that terrestial radio has.

LOL This is some funny shit! The total blame for this mess goes to Mel and Gary. Hell no to the merger.

I don't get it... do they want minority programming, or minority ownership? They can buy stock in SIRI all they want. They can buy ALL the SIRI stock out there if they want to own it.

Shareholders OWN Sirius, and Congress has no right to steal it from us. They can require programming, but they can't divest ownership. You CANNOT remove life, liberty, or property without due process, and no one addressed me about who can own what.

This is horse-trading, and it's ILLEGAL. They can LEASE Channels. They cannot OWN channels. Shareholders paid for those birds, and the hell if you're giving that away.

Again, is it PROGRAMMING? Or is this a giveaway to satisfy Jesse Jackson?

sounds like he got pressured by the interests and was probably forced to retract his original letter which was HIS honest opinion..(before he was "contacted"..
.
"My question to you is “Why?” The Companies currently have one of, if not the most, diverse programming lineups available to be heard on one service (if the merger is approved). It would be difficult to find anything comparable, even if you include cable and/or satellite TV. All you have to do is pick what you want to listen to, and you have it.

Worthless mouthpiece.

He must have got confused in the miscommunication and now he's haggling like he's buying a car.Damn, now Satellite will have to go talk to their manager after seeing if Rep. Bob Rush needs a soda or coffee.

What's next, free radios and subscriptions?

Are any of these guys aware that the President and CEO of XM is an African American. I have a feeling he might own some shares of the company as well.

He's also on the NAB payroll; check 2006.

Geez! If we were splitting a watermelon up I could understand all of these minority rights...

You see, you give these motherf*ckers an inch and they take a mile. I am sure Jesse Jackson and his buddy Chester Davenport of Georgetown Partners probably also got to Bobby Rush. I am a Union Electrician and a Democrat, however, UNDER NO circumstances would vote for Barack Obama for these very reasons. Whats next, enslaving the white man? Reparations? Any white working man who votes Obama is nuts. Pull the 8 channel offer and cancel ALL the minority programming, they probably are the lowest rated anyway. I am sick and tired of being a political hostage to these racists BLACK fuck$. Next they will want all "their" channels free.

Is it not possible to expose the blatant blackmail that is in play here? Congressman Rush along with Jesse Jackson, Chester Davenport, and others are holding the Sirius/XM Merger hostage in order to get their pound of free flesh. They are asking for 20-35% of the spectrum under the guise of some type of appeasement to minorities. It is an outrage, since almost every respected group that represents minorites including the NAACP and Lulac have endorsed the merger. There is already a large percentage of diversity on Sirius and XM. Where does Barack Obama stand on this issue. How about Jerimiah Wright. This is circus and needs to be exposed!!!

I hope they prosecute everyone involved with the hold up on this merger to the full extent of the law. Maximum fines and sentences be imposed. I bet a savvy District Attorney could find something one someone here and go after them. Let's see .. bribery, coersion, laundering of assets.

I'm done! I like reading Orbitcast, but this merger news makes me sick! Isn't there more important things for Bobby to do in IL then trying to get handouts from the FCC.

They are going to take what Rev King did back 20 years.

They are the ones that want to be different,

Whats a Majority channel?

What a travesty. Maybe racism wasn't so bad after all.

Fucking whore!

We need more man channels because we are a minority. Being a man, I want 20% of the combined company too.

Why not just "carjack" the next satellite launch?

Why all the suprise? Jesse Jackson et al have been doing this for years. Not just satelite radio but all major corporations get the shake down. Pony up the $$$ or they will fabricate a boycott and label the company as racist. Hell, even NASCAR got shook down a few years ago and named majic Long Johnson as some sort of diversity guru. Which means, he doesn't do much and makes a lot of money and NASCAR gets to prove it's not a racist entity.

I'm left-handed. Where's my minority channels--I want 8% of the 300 channels to reflect my proportion of the population. But I still fully support the merger. (Did I say that right, Chester?)

He miscommunicated again.
What he meant to say "Now that I have my bribe from Georgetown Partners, I say that we need more minority channels."

i am sick and tired of these minority orginizations demanding anything. they don,t have the balls to put there money where there mouth is. they want freebees and handouts . while the shareholders take all the risk? sooner or later this rev. al and rev jessie business model will come to an end.
put the vote to the investors about giving away there hard earned money to these lazy good for nothing jack asses, my guess would be a unanimous NO

Geesh...... ANOTHER colored guy from Illinois "F"ing things up for whitey.

Perhaps President Carter should ask for XM/Sirius to also give stations for Hamas and others so they can call for Jihad

Nice find Mat.

Just anouther paid off douche. These people are scum. I might buy off Congressman with my govt stimuls check. Pathetic.

put a fork in me, I am done! While your at it, pls thank the government for wasting time on this merger and not addressing the real issues of this nation. Ugh!

Expect more of this if Oboma is eleceted. in every asspect of our lives

What the hell do they want then?? twenty percent?? thirty??? do they want a fifty-fifty split?? do they honestly think anyone wants to have that much shit on their XM or sirius reciever??

I am not a racist nor am I predjudiced against blacks...I thnk everyone should own at least one or two...

Lets bring back slavery...just this spring till I get my garden in ...OK?

While everyone is in the spirit...can we bring back slavery just till I get my spring garden in ...I mean ...c'mon...it wasn't so bad....was it?

Chester Davenport...Sounds like you could keep your underwear in it and sit on it too!

Reparations and Jesse Jackson's 'illegitimate children'

"And so, my fellow Americans: Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country."

?President John F. Kennedy

Reparations for slavery, another illegitimate offspring of has-been civil rights "leader" Jesse Jackson, have hit the news.

The fading and desperate Jackson, who for over 30 years has built a lucrative career on the backs of black Americans, has paved the way for some of his "offspring" to push for reparations, a plot that if hatched will destroy the black community and divide our whole country. Among Jackson's chief "descendants" are trial lawyer Johnnie Cochran, Harvard law professor Charles Ogletree, and Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., who, among others, have banded together on this unholy crusade.

Masterfully, they have performed the two tasks on Jackson's lifetime "To Do" list:

Indict contemporary white America for something of which it is not guilty.
Demand money, and lots of it.
I can almost see a single tear roll down Jackson's cheek.

For blacks who live in the most opportunity-rich country in human history to demand money for the sins of 140 years ago is absolutely shameful. For white Americans or any Americans – many of whose ancestors weren't even in this country at the time of slavery – to pay reparations is a deep injustice.

A closer look at reparations shows it to be a divisive and evil plot. It is only the latest in a long list of ploys by the modern-day black civil rights movement to control the black community and divide the races. First of all, very few whites even owned black slaves, yet the reparations movement indicts all whites by virtue of their skin color. If this isn't racist, what is?

Second, the debt of slavery has already been paid through a major war. For all those in failing public schools, I am referring to the Civil War, where many, many whites died so blacks could be free.

Third, blacks benefited enormously from American slavery. I have often said that I thank God that my ancestors were taken to America in boats. Had this not happened, I could be in South Africa right now with Nelson Mandela, and really be in trouble.

America has granted every wish of black Americans. It has made government the head of the black family; it has integrated the schools and neighborhoods; it has given blacks welfare and affirmative action; it has even apologized through Bill Clinton. There is simply nothing else that America can or should do. Blacks should feel fortunate to be citizens of this country. We are blessed, not enslaved, and those who say otherwise are enslaved only by their own hatred.

As President Kennedy might say if he were alive today, "When will blacks seek to give back to this great land instead of seeking for ways to loot it?"

The effect of reparations would be among the most devastating the country and the black community have ever experienced. There would be hell to pay – we would see an unparalleled backlash. Whites and blacks would be divided like never before. But you don't hear Jesse Jackson ever talk about this inevitable catastrophe – and he's supposed to be a leader with the well-being of black Americans first in his mind.

This shows that Jackson and his "children" are not striving for blacks' well-being, but for personal gain. I don't believe for a minute that average blacks would actually get money earmarked for reparations. The money would likely go to Jackson, Cochran, many of the black preachers and others and would stay with them and their interests.

Just as money that is given to supposedly "rebuild" black communities after they've been burned down by blacks in riots (read "justified civil uprisings" if you're Maxine "No justice, no peace!" Waters) this cash would likely be distributed no further than from these "leaders'" right pockets to their left.

I must say that I don't believe reparations will end up being paid out. Most whites don't want to pay money for something they're not guilty of, and 30 percent of blacks have sense enough to see through this nonsense. But the very fact that we are seriously allowing this ridiculous debate is itself divisive and inflammatory.

It is time that all Americans of goodwill stand up and say "No more!" A veil of darkness is descending upon our nation, and Jackson and his "legacy" are proponents of this evil. We must refuse to stand by and let these thugs in three-piece suits lead our country to hell.

Unless we want to see division like never before, and the utter destruction of the black community, we must stop reparations now.

When will blacks seek to give back to this great land instead of seeking for ways to loot it?

What a great line...

NO! to "merge" MONOPOLY

Its unfortunate that these guys like Davenport, Jackson, and Rush, are f*cking it up for their race. It's easy to see them do this and think its indicitive for all blacks. I hope that one day, these idiots stop embarrasing other members of their race by using skin color as a ticket for handouts, because honest, hard-working blacks are the ones most hurt by these shakedowns.

One day people of color will see how much Jesse, Sharpton, and the rest of these idiots that subsist on the "propogation" of racism in America have placed them back in the fields instead of letting them prove their excellence in a color-blind world.

Damn, thats good prose there, eh?

Typical "blackmail",,,I always wondered where the word originated.

Wait until next January,,,there will be the Reverend Wright Channel at Sirius 100.

Has anyone emailed Rush Limbaugh to see why he hasn't spoken out in support of this merger nor against this blatant blackmailing of American liberties and enterprise?

I'd love to get him speaking about the so called "American" representatives that are speaking out of whichever side of their mouth will be fed the most money and free gifts.

The only ones that Sirius and XM should have any obligation to are the stockholders. A lot of people, including myself, have invested in these companies and have taken a risk; financially supporting this fledgling industry and supporting it out of a love for radio and recognizing that terrestrial radio is simply inadequate. It isn't just about trying to make money - there are still people out there who love listening to good radio and need it as an alternative to television, which for the most part is nothing but mindless nonsense that appeals to the lowest common denominator. What the hell is up with the notion that you can just get free handouts and special treatment because you happen to be a "minority". We are all minorities in some respect. If you are a white guy, there is a very good chance that you will never be employed by the National Basketball Association anytime soon. Talk about being a minority- I own satellite radio and support the merger! In the total realm of the world of radio, I am like a blip on a radar screen. Satellite radio commands less than 5% of all radio listeners. No problem with the FCC dicriminating against a minority in this case, but any freeloading moocher of color that wants something for nothing is given undivided attention by them. How about the thousands of people who put their ASS on the line investing their hard earned money in companies that are a threat to no one. Hey FCC, have you seen the competition out there? Every week there are alternatives to Satellite radio being offered to the public - it's almost impossible to keep up with the technology. You (FCC) are looking absolutely pathetic in the way you have botched this merger situation. Have you no shame? Stop pandering to "minorities'' and start paying attention to what the majority want in this country. What do we want, you ask? We want the merger approved, God Damnit!

It's people and things like this that create racism, not end it.

"I don't get it... do they want minority programming, or minority ownership? They can buy stock in SIRI all they want. They can buy ALL the SIRI stock out there if they want to own it.

Shareholders OWN Sirius, and Congress has no right to steal it from us. They can require programming, but they can't divest ownership. You CANNOT remove life, liberty, or property without due process, and no one addressed me about who can own what.

Again, is it PROGRAMMING? Or is this a giveaway to satisfy Jesse Jackson?"

Adios amigos this merger is never going to happen with this kind of give and take and take and take going on... this isn't negotiation, this is childish pushing to the limit and then pushing a little more and more and more...

http://www.fcc.gov/transaction/timeline.html This is a good laugh I just reread this I wonder when the last time any one at the fcc read it.

So the NAB bought themselves another greedy politician. I wonder how little they got him for. I'm looking for a Mothers Day gift and time is getting tight. May be just the ticket.

"I am not a racist nor am I predjudiced against blacks...I thnk everyone should own at least one or two...

Lets bring back slavery...just this spring till I get my garden in ...OK?"

You naughty bastard!! .... wait a second.... ummm I'll take two as well I've got shit that needs doing around the house....

Aren't the satellites private property? Do these guys also want free rides on airplanes, or free admission into movies and sporting events? If I was having a barbecue in my backyard, would this guy feel entitled to just walk over and take the biggest steak for himself? These guys seem not to grasp even the most fundamental concepts of "free enterprise". If satellite radio is such a great idea, which they clearly seem to think, might it be worthwhile for these "minority interests" to simply BUY (lease, whatever) one of the channels? Granted the interests of "minorities" may be valid, but why does that entitle them to this technology FOR FREE ! ! ! ! ! And furthermore, since when do we cater to the minority? I always thought "majority rules".

I don't understand the logic: I'm in a minority, therefore I'm entitled to free stuff. Actually, this is not minority logic, it's BLACK logic. It's a mental illness. Being BLACK, Mr. Rush, doesn't entitle you to free stuff ! The Asians or Latinos or Indians or Norwegians aren't demanding free channels, why are the Blacks? Why do black people think they're entitled to free stuff??? Why don't blacks launch their own satellite radio business so "white" interest groups can demand free channels?
