Satellite Radio tax gets reversed

Sirius A controversial plan to hike up taxes on "nuisance" items such as non-diet soda, manicures and satellite radio has been removed by New York State leaders today.

Phew! That was a close one.

Governor David Paterson, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver jointly announced Wednesday the agreement to eliminate these "nuisance" tax hikes as part of the proposed 2009-10 budget.

How will they make up the difference? Through funding provided by the federal government, of course.

Aside from taxing important things, such as satellite radio, the decision would have imposed tax hikes on items like clothing under $110, sugared drinks, digital downloads, haircuts, manicures, concerts, movies, health clubs, bowling, golf, and skiing among others.

The State of New York had originally planned to extend a sales tax to Satellite Radio as well as to Cable and Satellite Television. State revenue from this "nuisance" tax was estimated $136 million for 2009-2010, and $180 million for 2010-2011.

Now we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief.

not really,

we still get taxed in VA. Dumbest nickle and dime tax in the history of this country

idiots. Taxing fun things that people buy is a great way to stimulate the economy.

thank god this did not happen Since i work in the soft drink industry this would of killed my job and put alot of people out of work.

Satellite radio is a nuisance???

You'd think a guy like Paterson would be thrilled to have an extensive set of audio options in an otherwise video-intensive world. Sheesh...

We need to keep track of which legislators suggested these taxes so that we can ensure that these monsters never get elected again.
