Senator Dorgan opposes Satellite Radio Merger

Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee and a member of the Senate Commerce Committee and Appropriations Committee, is the latest on Capitol Hill to publicly oppose the XM-Sirius merger.
Dorgan sent a letter to DOJ Assistant Attorney General Thomas Barnett and FCC Chairman Kevin Martin opposing the proposed deal.
In the letter, Dorgan cites the FCC's condition that prevents one SDARS license holder from acquiring control of the remaining license.
Dorgan writes that "Little has changed since their initial licensing in 1997. While other forms of audio have sprouted up around the country, such as terrestrial radio, webcasting or mp3 players, the companies have no proven beyond a doubt that these forms amount to competition."
...funny, I didn't think that terrestrial just sprouted up since 1997. Bah, semantics!
Dorgan concludes, "I cannot believe that this merger will result in lower prices or increase diversity. And I cannot believe that the public will be better served by this merger. As I said in April and I still believe, this isn't even a close call. I urge you to reject the merger proposal by XM and Sirius."

Any idea what the stats are as far as which of the two parties has more reps in favor of the merger and which has more against? I know we had that letter with 70+ representatives saying they were against the merger, and now at least one senator from each side has come out against...Brownback for the Republicans and now Dorgan for the Democrats. Come to think of it, I can't remember seeing anything from ANY House or Senate members who were for the merger.

This whole merger proposal has taught me how crooked the whole setup is. It's obvious that however a politician benefits from the NAB that is what they base their decision on. This is so blatant. I will always remember the guys who tried to stop this, and will be sure to vote against them every chance I get, because I know they are easily swayed and don't use common sense.

Well Mr. Dorgan, Kevin Martin seems to like the a la carte pricing. He must be bankrolled by the NBA.

Be happy O&A are on there at all, considering XM doesn't gives 2 sh*ts about those two hacks.

Either it's deja-vu or I have the memory of an elephant.... but aren't alot of those pics on that chart taken straight from Orbitcast? I *know* the O&A/Howard one is from this site without a doubt

Looking at the picture I come to the conclusion that what is so bad about all those products that Sirius and XM provide. I can see the O&A and Howard (from a tight government official prospective) negative aspect but what is so wrong with little steven and bob dylan, etc.

What is his point by showing all of those pictures.

Yeah, and the NHL comes before the NFL, so it's OBVIOUSLY the biggest sport in radio...

jon: our representatives/senators behave kinda like a bunch of retarded third graders...if you don't show them lots of pretty pictures while you are you are speaking at them, they'll just sit there and draw pictures, drool, and eat boogers.

I find that chart to be shallow and pedantic.
Yes, shallow AND pedantic.

As an XM & Sirius subscriber from North Dakota, Senator Dorgan has lost my vote should he decide to run for re-election.

I actually feel like I understand now. Thanks

It's about time he said more about it. He said he was against the merger at the Senate Hearing months ago and was very open about it with Mel sitting right in front of him. He's only just now sending a letter to the Commission.

what, now you going to talk down to us?

John is absolutely right. sen. dorgan is no friend of NAB's on most issues. its laughable if you think that dorgan would do anything because NAB asked him to. some of you might try harder to wrap your minds around the fact that reasonable minds can differ. there's alot of people, sat radio subscribers, consumer groups, politicians and others who really believe that ending all the competition between xm and sirius might actually be bad for consumers.
