Sirius CanadaSIRIUS Canada has just announced that they've surpassed over 200,000 paying subscribers within the first year of operation.

This is incredible news considering that they've outpaced rival XM Canada, who announced they had 120,000 subscribers (91k being "self-paying") earlier this month. Sirius Canada has held a dominating position in Canada, with a retail marketshare of more than 70% year-to-date according to NPD.

Sirius Canada broke 100,000 subscribers back in May, and launched on December 1, 2005. So they're pacing about 100k subs every 6-months. That's impressive.

I think Sirius has done much better in Canada due to their superior Canadian content. XM has mostly produced "neutral" content, that is equally usable on both sides of the border. Sirius, however, has many channels that are uniquely Canadian.

wait one minuite.. Sirius canada has 200,000 subs anounced today 82 days (91 days per Q) after XM canada reported 120,000. At XM canada'a slow Summer pace (as seen in XM/Sirius Q3 numbers) that puts XM canada at 160,000 at the end of November. Has retail and OEM picked up in canada? or has Chrysler shipped more Factory installed units in September like they do in the USA every year? I think the split is much closer than they are leading us to beleive.

Agree with Johnathan, Sirius has the better Canadian Content, thanks to CBC. I see more XM in Halifax than Sirius (the XM van, XM stickers at stores, shows...) yet everybody I run into who has Sat rad has a Sirius player. One reason they say they get Sirius is the better footprint- as told by the store staff.

Sirius' canadain channels are great, IMHO. But that's not why they are winning the sat. radio war up North. The Canadian channels only number about 5. Its the other 130 channels that are the deciding factor. And, just like in America, when people have a choice with the content, they choose Sirius.

But then again... Sirius still counts cars sitting on New Car Lots as subscribers...

I think Canada can be very fertile ground for satellite. Think of it: a relatively sparsely populated country that stretches the continent, making terrestrial radio a lousy proposition by comparison.

And not a single mention of Howard Stern...

Ryan, when Sirius released earnings, someone mentioned that the wording in their filing sounded as if they might be counting Canadian subscribers, too. Do you have any info on that?
