Three years ago we first learned that Sirius was preparing a new geostationary satellite called the Sirius FM-5. In May, the Sirius FM-5 satellite was delivered and shortly afterwards the satellite was launched on June 30th. And just recently Sirius XM Radio Inc. announced that the Sirius FM-5 satellite was put into service to augment its existing satellite constellation. So the question is, as Sirius subscribers - have you noticed a difference?
The Sirius FM-5 is located in a geostationary orbit position over North
America (approximately above Texas, at 96 degrees west longitude).
Sirius XM says that the new satellite "provides improved signal penetration and reception" to subscribers.

The company also says that the Sirius FM-5 significantly increases the broadcast power of the total Sirius network - focusing power in areas of peak population, such as metropolitan areas on the east and west coast, as well as significantly improving reception when driving under heavy foliage.
But the real test of the benefits from the Sirius FM-5 satellite is the experience from subscribers - especially heavy users that would notice changes in reception.
So have you noticed a difference? Sound off in the comments below.
(Side note: I know I have a lot of catching up to do, look for an influx of new posts coming over the course of this week. My invitation for guest contributors is still open - email me here if you would like to contribute articles to Orbitcast)

I live in Northern Maine, and still lose signal in the 3 places that I used to lose signal while driving to work. Guess it doesnt help me at all. Still better than FM...and I get it free because I am a Sirius/XM retailer, so the price is right.
Yes 2 bars in a building with steel roof!
I haven't driven enough since FM-5 went live, but I do know that in the weeks leading up to the new satellite's activation, my service in areas of heavy foliage and on roads in deep ravines was significantly worse. I wonder, were they repositioning the other birds or had they otherwise turned down the power on them? Did anyone else experience this?
I am in Atlanta, and have noticed no improvement.
In fact, since the first week of June, the signal strength in the north suburbs of Atlanta is really weak. At first Sirius said some towers were being repaired and then on a followup call they told me that nothing was ever wrong.
Could it be the new CLEAR wi-fi service that is city wide is effecting Sirius reception? The service was turned on in Atlanta around the same time the Sirius signal went to crap.
Sirius won't give me a straight answer except telling me to reset my radio, which isn't the problem at all.
Nice to hear from you again! I can't speak for everybody, but in my case the difference in signal strength and reception has been profound. I haven't had to adjust/redirect the antenna in 3 weeks; before this satellite was activated, I would have dropouts all the time - sometimes lasting for 5 to 10 minutes. The Sirius FM-5 has been a revelation in terms of my sat rad listening experience!
I agree. The drop-outs on my drive to work (a one-lane, heavily wooded road) were frequent and long. However, in the past few weeks, I have noticed a marked change in signal strength, with drop-outs very rare if they happen at all.
I live on Long Island, and every morning on my way to work, I have signal problems. However, it's only at that time in the morning. The rest of the day, I have no problems at all.
I haven't seen an improvement recently, but I hope there will be one soon!
My sirius signal no longer cuts out when driving thru bridge underpasses, like it did a few months ago.
No!
I live in the Washington, DC area and Sirius reception is still terrible here.
btw, I have yet to hear an official explanation of how FM-5 works. It seems to me that something else must have been shut down to allow it to be activated. I have heard lots of speculation about changing the previous sats from 2 active at any time to only one active but this is just speculation - - nothing official. If anyone has an official explanation from the company of how this fits into the system RF plan, please post a link. Thanks
I listen in Louisville, KY. I have noticed a stronger signal. The signal is not lost immediately when pulling into the garage. I am able to get a good signal for my stilleto in the attic as well. Never could do either of this before.
I guess I've been lucky because I haven't noticed any signifcant problems...
I live in the Atlanta area and apparently my home is in a satellite gulch. When I moved there in January, I could no longer pick up the signal with my Sirius boombox's regular antenna, and dropped the service. In my car, it is very in-and-out as I drive through this residential area about 10 miles from downtown. On my daily commute it has to stop and link at least four or five times as I drive in the area. I have noticed no difference at all and was assuming the satellite wasn't really online yet, but maybe it doesn't affect my area...?
Glad to see you posting again!
I'm in mass and I used to get drop outs 4 times a day for about 30min. (antenna was always facing west/south west) I could tell cause all my delay on the receiver would be used up due to lost signal.
Haven't had this problem in what seems like a month or so. ZERO drop outs. So far so good!
Is it Sirius/XM? Or Sirius? Very confusing.
Hello all!
Sirius Satellite Radio has always been inconsistent in my area! I stopped my subscription to Sirius some time ago! When I read about the new Satellite launching on June 30th, I decided to reactivate my receiver in August since I figured the new satellite was operational! To make a long story short, I thought everything was working better around the 15th of August. On the 22nd, Denver was playing Seattle! I placed my antenna in the usual east window and needless to say the signal flickered out as usual! I thought to myself that I'd never consider Sirius again! I'd let my trial expire and leave it at that! On August 30th, I turned on the radio again and noticed it was having a good signal. I was using a window I normally use for XM. I again thought, this is ashame! It works well when it works but it will go out again! I checked for the time of a game my wife wished to watch on TV. I checked the signal again some hours later and noticed it was still coming in well! I checked at three in the morning and the signal was still doing great! I haven't lost Sirius again! I figured they must have just activated the new satellite! Sirius works as well now as does XM here! I now use a south facing window rather than an east window in my house. Perhaps the Washington DC gentleman should try a south facing window. My old PNP2 Sirius receiver is acting like a new radio! Quite often it would take five to ten seconds for a signal to lock into place. Now a new channel takes a second to lock in, maybe a half a second. My PNP2 is the first plug and play radio Sirius had available. it isn't capable of a best of XM package so I'm told! Since my wife likes her football, I'll renew Sirius! it will cost me roughly $466 to renew my three XM radios. I don't have it this year! I'm hoping a new skeme will be in place one day where one can have more than one radio on an account! Right now, with all the added costs, multiple radios is out of the question. Sirius Satellite Radio Division should be congradulated for a job well done! No doubt those XM engineers served them well (grin smile)! It is thumbs up for me here! Perhaps I would have had a different view of the merger if it worked this well before but that's water under the bridge! I'm so pleased it is working so well here now!
Keep up the great work! I do enjoy Orbitcast!
Jim
I have noticed on my Flights ! My Stiletto is working much better and on several flights from Nashville to Houston and back and Nashville to Dallas and back I could pick it up the entire flight.
I'm in Central Maine and I can actually get a Sirius signal indoors now with a car or home antenna. Definitely a significant change indoors. In the car is about the same as it was. In my case in the car it's been great, even with the SIGMA on-glass antenna.
I had dropouts every so often in NE PA before this bird went active. I've noticed an improvement, with little to no dropouts like before. I'm fairly happy with this new improvement.
noticed the last few days with the portable radio. had two bars. i never have two bars.and no drop outs while i'm going for my morning walk.
my stiletto now works inside my house without wi-fi....definite improvement in connecticut
In August I had a lot of fade outs. I use a Stiletto in my home and the antenna is positioned in the north west window. As of September I have had no dromp in signal. In my bed room I have an antenna near my south west wall. I use it for xm but now sirius comes in also. So the signal goes through the wall like xm. As some of you may know, sirius is supposed to launch another satellite in the last quarter of 2010. I think it is called serius fm six. I wonder what that one is for? Does anyone know? Ryan, glad you are back. Thanks for all you do with orbitcast.
My reception seems to be worst lately. I thought something was wrong with my radio, but this maybe explains it. I'll get back to you as I'm now aware of the new satellite and try my other radios while driving.
Yeah I agree the sound is much better. O n A come in much clearer. They still suck and aren't funny but it's much clearer.
Is there anything they can do to make them more interesting?
I definitely have noticed an improvement. I live in NJ and have the antenna positioned on the side of my house facing south. Unfortunately this was the only place I could conveniently put it. I used to have dropouts at various times of the day lasting at least 2 hours or so. During that time, the signal would be mostly null occasionally breaking in for a few seconds and then dropping off again. It was extremely annoying. Now, those problems are gone. I get consistent signals ALL day and it is great. I love it now. Never had any problems in my car so I can't comment on that. Thank you SiriusXM.
Actually in the past few day's I've had more drop outs than normal.... have they changed their signal strengths to the normal satellites along hoping that this new one would pick up the loss?
The craziest part of this is that I mounted my residential external antenna on the cone of my Direct TV dish. The dish also points to a similar point of the sky for my region, so I know I have a very clear view and should have a near perfect signal at all times. Yet the frequency of dropouts has actually increased.
If they're so bland, why do you continue to listen? Also, way to sound like an idiot. An extra bird in geo.stat isn't going to make a difference in clarity, just signal integrity. The bitrate for talk stations has remained the same = you're blowing smoke in an attempt to sound witty, which you're not.
At my office in Covina, CA, the SIRI signal used to cut out from about mid morning until later in the afternoon. Now, I'm consistently getting 2/3 of a full satellite signal day and night.
At home, I dismantled my Echo Repeater system. The individual desktop antennas work just fine. Again 2/3 bar from the Sats. Before FM-5 the Echo Repeater hooked up to an outdoor antenna was the only way to get reliable SIRI reception inside of my house.
I wonder why I'm not getting FULL sat reception from FM-5... I have some XM units and THEY all get 100% sat signals everywhere. But only 2/3 sig strength for SIRI. With an outdoor antenna, I used to get 100% signal from the original three SIRI birds. But now, just 2/3 with the powerful FM-5 signal. Strange. Reliable and better, but strange.
FM-5 is supposed to be pumping out more juice than either of the XM satellites. I wonder if SIRI is throttling back on FM-5's power to perhaps squeeze 20 years of life out of their new bird. (Speculation only) It also may be that ONE slightly more powerful SIRI bird can't put out as much usable energy as TWO XM birds.

I live in Portland, OR and I have noticed improved signal reception. My truck used to cut out due to heavy foliage, but this hardly happens anymore. Good job Sirius!
YES A HUGE IMPROVEMENT IN NORTHEASTERN MARYLAND NO SIGNAL DROPS WHATSOEVER. CRYSTAL CLEAR IT JUST ENHANCED MY INVESTMENT IN EQUIPMENT 2000%
Much better reception now in South East. I can use my Stiletto 2 in the house without the external antenna. Nice!
Yes! I'm 40 miles NE of Atlanta. Up until recently the signal was marginal on my boom-box and I had to reposition the antenna at different times during the day. Now the signal is locked in all day with 2 and sometimes 3 bars. (full-signal) Much better!
No change here in Southeast Missouri.
I knew something was different! Totally forgot about this bird. I recently moved to a new home and I've been laying 900sq ft of flooring. I've been bringing my radio inside and attach it to the boombox. Normally I would have to put the antenna out from under the eave of the house. I was shocked when I found my radio worked in one room with the antenna sitting in the window facing south, under the 6 foot metal canopy. I was shocked it worked! I kept waiting for it to drop out as the satellites moved.
The Sirus FM-5 satellite (really RADIOSAT-5) replaces one of the two Molniya signals. The Sirius satellites broadcast the whole 4 MHz that they are assigned. There are three groups: two satellite and one terrestrial. They can't broadcast a portion of the signal. It's all or nothing.
The XM satellites, by contrast, each broadcast two 2 MHz signals and can be made to do any combination which proved itself when the problem with the solar panels was discovered and they had each one broadcast one half of the 4 MHz signal for that particular RF ensemble.
I'm in central PA, in an apartment with windows facing east and south (i.e. completely blocked from the sweet spot, supposedly over Minnesota). I used to tape my external antenna to a six foot cardboard tube and hung it out my window with a counterweight to listen to Sirius in the morning. Now I put the antenna on any windowsill and I get a steady two bars - and right now the antenna's in the middle of my apartment about 12 feet from any window and I have one bar of signal with no dropouts whatsoever (and I live 180 miles from the nearest terrestrial repeater). This is great - reminds me of when I was in Pittsburgh and lived near a repeater!
Also, I drive through the mountainous / tree-covered roads of northern PA and used to lose signal on my Stiletto consistently. With the new satellite, I lose signal much less often (about 20% of the time I used to).
I'm in Minneapolis and my Sirius reception completely changed. I've had Sirius for 4 years and have always listened to it at work and at home with no problem - the location of my antenna never impacted my reception. They've always right by my docking stations. Starting last Saturday, I just get "acquiring signal" at work and at home and I can't get a signal regardless of where I move my antenna (outside, windows, any direction) or by changing out antennas. Car reception is just fine, however. The Sirius tech support is a joke...they just told me to change antenna's which didn't work either. It didn't even register a response from them when I said that I've had no signal problems for 4 years. So this is a tough thing to swallow after 4 years of being spoiled!
I just noticed that on my way to work (From Palmdale, to downtown LA), I do not have the drop outs under overpasses that I had in the pass. I just looked at my signal meters at work, and in the past I would only get the terrestial signal at my desk, now I get both, about 75% on the Sat and 100% on the repeater.
Chris, EXACT same thing for me at my office near Minneapolis, even down to changing antennas. Very, very frustrating.
Chris, same thing for my husband and myself. As far as we know this started over the weekend (Sept 19 or so). He works in Mpls and I work in Moundsview. Both of our systems are stuck at acquiring signal. We took both units home (about 12 miles from Moundsview) and they work just fine. Tech support said my antennas were bad and the guy would not listen to reason. Not sure what to do now but it definitely is a Sirius problem not my equipment.
MINNEAPOLIS: Just talked to Sirius about the "acquiring signal" issues in Minneapolis, MN. They are going to check the repeater(s) for the area and call me back. Hope this is the problem. It's been down all week.
Janelle--Any luck?
Hello!
There are 3 of us in an office downtown Minneapolis that have had service with no problem for close to 2 years. Last Saturday, September 19, there was no signal and has been no signal since. We called last Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and today (Saturday). On Monday the 21st I was told there was a repeater down, which is a ground based broadcast site (because of all the tall buildings in MPLS) and told it would take 4-6 business days to fix. I was told it would take 4-6 business days again on Thursday the 24th and today the person guaranteed me that it would be fixed by Thursday October 1. It definitely is not a radio issue, although that is what they are telling people and they want to troubleshoot the radio. It is their issue and they are in no hurry to get it fixed. They won't let you talk to a manager and I want to cancel my subscription and couldn't do that either (I am paid through February 2010.) Any suggestions on what to do? They also will not credit you for more then $10.00.
MINNEAPOLIS: Well as you can see, Sirius never called me back on Friday. I called again a few minutes ago and got the run around about the antenna again. After I got a bit angry, the tech did some voodoo where he said he sent a signal to one of the radios to "make the signal stronger". Not sure what happened with that since out of the blue the call was disconnected. He said he checked the repeaters and they were up and functioning. I will continue to try to get through to someone. Vicki- it sounds like your negotiation skills are much better than mine since you got much further into the belly of the beast than I did.
All the times I have called, they have tried to tell me it is my radio antenna, as they have told you. It is the ground signal which I think they call the "terrestial" (spelled wrong) signal because of all the buildings here in Minneapolis. I just told them to NOT tell me it was my radio because of all the others NOT getting reception. I sent a letter to the Minnesota Attorney General yesterday. I am also going to look into contacting the FCC. Don't let them fool you. They can't send a "signal" to your radio, it isn't Charter or Comcast we are dealing with were they can send a signal to your modem. I am so ANGRY with them....
Oh great. I am on line with them now and they are saying they are no problems in Minneapolis, it is my radio. Here is the case number they gave me 11496C2. This is the first time in the 5 times I have called that they have given me one. I am calling 888 539-7474 and getting to number 5 tech support. PLEASE CALL!! Go ahead and use this case number. GOOD LUCK! Vicki
MINNEAPOLIS: Just got off the phone with Sirius again. They said they do not have an ETA on when the issue referenced in case # 11496C2 will be resolved. They also would not add my comments to the ticket as that is not how they do things. I made it clear that's why they don't know how wide spread this is. She said tech support has no way of testing the repeaters- that has to be done by the engineers that must be dispatched to the location of the repeaters. That means the joker that I talked to yesterday was just plain blowing me off. It sounds like they have not even looked into the issue referenced in the case # as I'm assuming they didn't open any case # until Vicki finally got through to them yesterday. I'll keep the pressure on as I hope all of you do as well. Can't listen online since my company blocks streaming audio... argh!
Same here in Fridley, no terrestrial signal. I did find some interesting information about the 3 repeaters in the twin cities here http://www.dogstarradio.com/sirius_map.php?state=Minnesota
From this it looks like Repeater #143 is having some issues. Too bad Sirius is dragging their feet on this, might have to invest in a outdoor antenna to get better satellite signal at home.
MINNEAPOLIS: Today is the day our signal is supposed to be fixed in Mpls. I checked on the radio located in Mpls and it is still not working. I don't have the other radio sitting in Moundsview since I took it home so I could at least use it there. I'll bring that in tomorrow. Everyone on Mpls please keep us posted if you start to get a signal. I'm guessing something has changed (obviously) and they are going to force us to buy stronger antennas. Lame.
Same results for me -- I tried calling sirius for the 3rd time to get an answer other than "our repeaters are fine, it must be your antenna". I even tried using the case number from the previous post with no results .. So frustrating!
I'm in Minneapolis and just got Sirius radio. I can't get it to work at all. It looks like other people are having similar problems. This sucks.
FRIDLEY, MN - I sent Sirius an email yesterday telling them that their repeater in Minneapolis is down. They have responded to me by telling me I should re-send an activation signal to my radio. This makes no sense at all, I get satellite just fine in my car and outside with the radio in my boom-box. My guess is that Sirius is trying to save some money by eliminating terrestrial repeaters in smaller markets. I know St. Paul is supposed to have a repeater as well, does anyone in St. Paul or points just east of there have any trouble getting the terrestrial signal?
I tried calling last night. After telling them that I had upgraded my firmware, removed my battery, and all this other stuff, they finally said "Well, we can't guarantee a signal". I can't believe it!
I just called Sirius again tonight. The first technical support person sent a signal to my radio multiple times and said he made no connection. He then said he could not help and transferred me to someone else. After being transferred 3 or 4 times and about 20 minutes on hold I spoke to someone. He told me to buy a new antenna or a new radio. After telling him I shouldn't have to do that he said he checked and Minneapolis has not reported having any problems. Clearly, he does not know of the rest of you calling in from Minneapolis. He said an email is being sent out tonight and the Minneapolis area will be checked on tomorrow. I'm supposed to call back tomorrow night to get an update...
MINNEAPOLIS: Traded an email with Sirius today:
>> Message: Just want to send one last update to Sirius from a whole lot of subscribers in Minnesota. You guys are total losers for not helping us and more and more people are finding out that their radios are stuck at "acquiring signal" since Saturday, September 19. Many of us have repeatedly called and you have done nothing but give us the run around.
Once my subscriptions runs out in December, I'm done. I've been a customer since 2006. I will never recommend your service to anyone.
------------------------------------
Thank you for writing us here at SIRIUS regarding your signal issue with
your receiver in Minnesota. We deeply apologize for a delay in the
response. It just happened that were experiencing some challenges in
the system that resulted to the dalliance of our action on your
concerns. Please note that our most important goal at SIRIUS is to
ensure that we are doing everything we can to resolve our customers
issue. We would like to research this issue so that we may assist you
with a resolution. Please reply to this email with the following
information:
>>Do you realize how many times I have relayed this information to Sirius? This is so unbelievably disrespectful. You really think we have no idea how to work our radios?
- Did you see anything in the area that might obstruct the signal?
>> If your worthless support center was worth anything it would already be documented that I have two radios. One in Moundsview and one in Mpls. These radios have been in the same spot since 2006 and working with NO interruptions until Saturday, September 19.
- Does this happen at specific times of day?
>> YES, it does happen at specific times of day- ALL DAY!
- When did these interruptions start to happen?
>> Here's some new information for you... Saturday, September 19, 2009
- Where is your antenna located?
>>Sitting on top of the wall of my office cube. Same place it has been for four years- pointing towards Mpls (South)
- What brand and model of satellite tuner are you using?
>> Don't you know? You can't look up my information?
I have two radios:
S50 and Sportster 4
Some brilliant support person said he downloaded some files to the S50 to make its signal stronger then he hung up on me. Still no change.
- What does the display on your receiver read when the sound is
interrupted?
>> ACQUIRING SIGNAL BUT both radios work when I take them home about 12 miles North of the Moundsview location.
This information will help our engineers determine why this is happening
and find a resolution.
>> Doubt it since your engineers haven't come back with anything so far or could it be that your support center never passed the information onto them?
Someone must have finally figured out the cord was unplugged -- Sirius terrestrial signal in Minneapolis finally restored around 2:30pm Friday Oct 2 .. After a two week outage hopefully it will stay!
I sent a few more complaint emails and got some very useless responses today. However, at around 2:30pm today I started getting a Terrestrial signal! I was trying it out at my office in Plymouth (just west of Minneapolis 10 miles) this morning and could barely get a satellite signal (because I'm indoors). Now, I'm getting a great terrestrial signal! Maybe our complaints paid off?
FRIDLEY: YAY!!!!! The Terrestrial signal is back in Minneapolis!!!! Somebody went and plugged the extension cord back into the wall....YAY!!!!!!
Hello! I came to work at 4 pm and guess what, my Sirius radio is WORKING!! Let me know if any of you are back up in the Minneapolis area. WOW! 13 days to get it fixed! I do NOT think that is very good customer care at all. I won't be renewing my subscription at all when it is up. Funny thing is that I called again earlier today from home and I again was told by the person who answered the phone that they were not aware of any issue with any signals in Minneapolis. Thanks for all the info and help and good luck to all of you!
MINNEAPOLIS: Unbelievable! I have not tried it but if Dave in Fridley is getting a signal, I'll get one too on Monday. Thank you to everyone who pushed the point. No idea what was wrong but frankly, you never know who you are dealing with until you have problems- then it's all downhill.
Good luck everyone!!
Janelle
MINNEAPOLIS: Just one final comment- Sirius is back up for me both in Mpls and Moundsview.
Thanks!!
Janelle
oct 6th 12:15 pm. After experiencing the same issues as the rest of the Minnesota metro area, the restored signal dropped out......and its been out for 3 hours. Do I dare call these bozos again?
I am down again in MPLS. At least I got to listen to the Vikings/Packers game last night. This really is horrible.
And I called AGAIN and as usual, they have no issues in the MPLS area. Tried to cancel again, no luck. Anybody else having issues?
Minneapolis Sirius outage...Everyone call this number. 1-888-635-5142. That is not the normal customer service number. It is Corporate Customer Service. Call them and ask for Margaret or Patricia. If neither are available someone else should be able to help. You should get through right away.
I also called in, just to report the outage of a terrestial repeater. They swore up and down that they dont have a issue and it was I that was "lucky" I got a signal for 4 years in the office building that I have received reception. They suggested I put my antennea by a window. ( gee thanks!)
Monday and Tuesday till 12:15 I had six bars of terrestial signal. Now I have the black X of death. Hmmmmmmmmmm
MINNEAPOLIS: Just talked to Margaret at the number above. Wow. What a difference that call was. She credited me for a month of service and I didn't even ask for it. She wants everyone who is having the problem to call her at the number listed in Eric's post. She says it appears to be a repeater issue. Please call her if you are having issues... Janelle
Minneapolis OUTAGE: I called the 1-888-635-5142 number Eric listed. THANKS!!! It was a huge difference. Everyone, must call that number and speak to either Margaret or Patricia. They are finally starting to acknowledge that there is a problem and it's not my radio or antenna. I've been fighting their normal customer service line for more than two weeks now. Everyone PLEASE CALL! We need to achieve critical mass in order to get action taken on this. Again... 1-888-635-5142. Margaret or Patricia.
The signal is back on in Minneapolis.
And now it is back down.
I also talked to Margaret. Very nice to have someone that seemed to know what was going on. She took my ph # and zip code to narrow down the area that is being affected. In the last 1/2 hour I am getting terrestial signal off and on, I believe they are working on the issue.
Janelle? How is it working for you?
The signal was only up for 15 minutes.
The signal came back at a few minutes past 11am Minneapolis time.
I called the number to report my issues. Of course when they called me back the signal was back up. She said a tech was sent out to fix the problem. Got my credit for a month of service. I work across the street from the Minneapolis transmitter and its been loud and clear for 30 minutes now.
MINNEAPOLIS: Margaret called me around 10:30AM to say that there was indeed a repeater down and that a tech was enroute to troubleshoot. She will call when it has been repaired or there is an update. This is the SECOND phone call from Margaret- after two weeks of no response this darn near brought tears to my eyes! Dare we hope this will finally get resolved?
MINNEAPOLIS: The signal is back up in Mpls. Can you please confirm if this is the case for the rest of you.
MINNEAPOLIS: Down again...
That is an agents ID # not a case # it will not do a thing....
