Grateful DeadSirius Satellite Radio will be launching a new channel dedicated to the legendary Grateful Dead, starting this summer.

Grateful Dead Radio will feature music spanning the band's long and storied career, live performances from the band's own archives, bootleg performances from fans (sweet!), previously unreleased recordings, and even special shows hosted by members of the band.

The Grateful Dead, well known for constantly touring, started a musical revolution in the psychedelic landscape of the 60s. The band kept the hippy spirit alive during in the decades to follow, creating a "devoted" community of fans - and a way of life for many.

"We have fans who've driven hundreds of miles to see us," said Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. "Now you can save on greenhouse gas emissions with Sirius without driving a mile."

Any word on channel number ?

I have been waiting for this. This is great! I wonder, will this only be for a week, a month, a perm. channel? Any details? I can't imagine all of the concerts they could broadcast. Good Job Sirius and the Dead!

Is this one of Sirius' temporary X weeks/month channel or is it a permanent offering? While I'm generally against having one channel dedicated to one artist, the Dead is one band that could pull it off with all of the authorized bootlegged concerts, etc.

If it's just for a few weeks, it's nice but no big deal. If it's a permanent station, that's pretty cool. I wanted XM to do that a long, long time ago.

I hate the Dead. Stupid hippiecrits...

And if I want to hear endlessly self-indulgent solos stretched on for 20+ minutes, I'll turn on "Jam On". It's an excellent substitute for a bullet to the head.

Haha Sirius has Grateful Dead while XM is just dead. Howard Stern always wins.

just got done with phil lesh`s audiobook "searching for the sound" and now this news
good move sirius! for the niche oriented sat industry this is kinda a no brainer huh? lets just hope they(siri) can break away from the template they have followed so far otherwise im afraid all well get is "truckin" 24/7 ala your neiborhood fm station...(fingers crossed)

there is a podcast called "deadpod" that ive been downloading recently and sirius could do worse then to follow the format of this podcast....light on the talkin.....heavy on the groove!

I would suspect that the Dead channel will replace Jam_ON, a la Siriusly Sinatra replacing Standard Time.

FINALLY! I finally have something to listen to as my boyfriend and I make out! No Dead Heads here if you catch my drift!

I love the Dead, but I don't love the single artist channels. Elvis is an anomaly. They still play different artists on Siriusly Sinatra. Jam_On was fine with playing typically 1 Dead song an hour. I'm not saying I won't listen, I just don't think the single artist channels (especially at the expense of another channel) are that great of an idea.

Yuck. A whole channel devoted to one of the worst, dare I even call them a band, myths of the last few decades. Complete waste of bandwidth. Enjoy touch of gray all day. As far as I'm concerned, they're dead, I'm grateful.

^ Mind you, PFreak would be full of praise if XM landed this deal first.

JEALOUS!

Oh well, Grateful Dead Hour on Deep Tracks and my days of recordings will have to do. But yeah, still jealous.

Now they have Jam Band and Dead. Kinda redundant, but i want them both also!

Fantastic news. Thousands of shows to pull material from. I imagine it'll only be for about 2 months like the others. They do have a few Bill Walton shows they will probably play as well.

With Howard Stern, NASCAR, Sinatra, Jimmy Buffet, the Dead, etc. and Mr. Karmazin heading it all up, its obvious why people are going to Sirius en masse. What does XM offer? No shock jocks, just crappy MLB the most boring game on the planet, and the Oprah channel. Not to mention plenty of downtime. Beyond worse than AM, FM, its XM satellite radio.

Ugh! I hate the Greatful Dead! Similar to other posters, I don't like the single channel artists channels either. I love the Rolling Stones and Who; however, I am so sick of them because of those channels. I don't think I ever have to hear "Ruby Tuesday" ever again. If Sirius removes one of my favorite channels (i.e. Underground Garage) for this, I'll be pissed off!

"Not to mention plenty of downtime."

2 days out of 6 years of service = plenty?
Keep doing those drugs.

Dead rules

Sorry,

I wouldn't support this if XM did it. I fucking hate this shitty "band". Any channel devoted to even my top 5 seems a waste of time. If you want to hear one band over & over play their CD's.

Dead Sirius! never was n 2 the dead until I saw the dead live. 2 great moves by sirius content this year. grateful dead and lithium. this is goona rock!

thank god. i've been looking for a place with soundboard recordings since they pulled their shows from archive.net...

if any band deserves its own channel, it's the dead.

I can think of no other band that is more suited for a channel dedicated to them. There is more recorded content on this band than any other band in history. For those that don't take the time to get into the tape trade this is a nice alternative. From the way it sounds it will be a perm channel - one can hope.

The comment about not liking them until they were seen in person was exactly my case. I hated the dead and hated the extremely few times that touch of grey was played on MTV long ago and then I saw the dead in concert and it was pure addiction from there. There is or has never been a band that put so much into their music and fans as the dead and I only caught the last few years. This is great news.

I am getting Sirius tonight because of the Dead, Buffett and Sinatra stations, Plus the NFL...choosing between XM and Sirius was actually pretty easy...

And the person who complained about listening to touch of gray over and over is out of control.... 1 song on MTV and all of a sudden thats their only song? wow. reality meet Pfreak, Pfreak meet reality.

For those of you who can't understand why the Dead would be given their own station...at least you still have budwiser. Appreciating the Dead is like drinking a fine wine. So many amazing performances, so much great music. Way to go Sirius! Let the music play!

Amazing! What A dream come true. Someone mentioned more recorded material than any other band. By far!!! No one even comes near a close second! To all you dummies out there that say "shitty ,self-indulgent,play on too long, etc." - What narrow-minded, non-appreciators of music you truly are. Haven't you ever heard a song you wished would "go on forever"? Or do you just put music on to hurry through one song so you can get to the next song to hurry through to get to the next.... The Grateful Dead took music to new levels- to places no one else could. That's precisely why they're loved, revered by their many fans(more fans also than any other band, by far),and why they are well-respected by their musical peers and contemporaries! Thank you Sirius-I can't wait-enjoy true music fans!!

If you don't like single artist stations - don't listen to them! This is the only thing that matters on any radio today. I signed up 8/1/2007 just to get the dead channel. If this was the only channel Sirius had, I would have still signed up. As to PFreak, sixty five thousand people three nights in a row can't all be wrong. This went on for 20+ years.

before we all go and fire up the bong, and get too excited, let's see what rhino is gonna LET sirius actually play. if you've been to the dead site recently, you'll notice that all the mp3 tunes that have been posted in the "taper's" section have now been converted to files you can only stream (IF you can get 'em to even load.)
rhino has taken the whole dead sharing idea and turned it south. they haven't released anything of note since taking the archives over, even the latest 3 from the vault was weak.
so, i wish 'em well, but after seeing what is going on with the sale of all the dead's material, i wouldn't be surprised if it's all the same old same. yer better off buying the dixpix series.
good luck sirius.
when ya get confused, listen to the music play...

Way to go Sirius!
Ive been listening to sirius for a couple of years now.
Its about time, 24/7 Jerry and the boys
I do not think that the Jam channel will go away... it is here to stay.
I bet Pfreak listens to Britney Spears
With a name like that, youd think he would be hip to it, but obviously we cant tell a book by its cover :)
Ive heard some really cool music... some studio jams that you will NEVER hear anywhere else.
I listen at work all day and everyday, hasent gotten old yet nor do I expect it to.

I love the idea but I've been listening all week and they just keep playing the same songs over and over again.

I Love the Grateful Dead now everyone, read this,
