Just when you thought that every possible sport could be covered on satellite radio, Sirius goes ahead and signs a multi-year deal with the National Lacrosse League (NLL) making Sirius the exclusive Official Satellite Radio Partner of the NLL. A marketing agreement is also associated with this deal.
Starting today, Sirius will air the NLL "Game of the Week" show live throughout the season plus the Champion's Cup Playoffs. Sirius will also broadcast a weekly one-hour show later this season that will feature highlights, news and analysis.
The NLL coverage is exclusive to both Sirius Satellite Radio and Sirius Canada.

Please tell me they didn't pay for this.
Probably over paid for it like they do all their programming.
Most popular in North America, lacrosse is Canada's official national summer sport and the fastest growing sport in the United States.

Some people need to get out more......
If you have to tell people something is popular, then by definition, its not.
See, it is Sirius, so they most likely paid like $100 million for it and Stern will be on Letterman with a LAX stick to promote it next week.
I guess I am just stuck with that baseball thing on XM.
Rich is right. It is the fastest growing sport in the United States.
Before there were around 150 spectators of this historical sport and now there are over 200. It's taking North America by storm.
Up in Canada curling is a huge sport. Maybe they should put that on the radio too. Is the link supposed to give some kind of weight to your comment? Soccer's the next big sport too right? Everyone else in the world loves it. Lets get that up on sat radio. If they paid anything for it they overpaid. What a waste of bandwidth.
What next? Checkers?
Great, XM, just great!! You missed another attraction. If Sirius signs the ADAA, I'm switching to Sirius.
(ADAA: American Dodgeball Assocation of America)
Come on guys, ease up on Sirius here. I'm sure they didn't pay much for it. They may even have been paid to carry it. Either way, Sirius has alot of open space in the summer without the MLB, so it doesn't hurt to fill one station with this game of the week.
Wow that really surprises me given the close relationship and deals the NLL has with the NHL.
Is it worth it to have on the radio, who knows but some people think that having baseball on the radio is a good idea.

So by your opinion baseball is not really popular since people have to constantly tell me that it is popular and how entertaining it is. Hell baseball on TV is rediculous to watch.

Yeah and Oprah and Baseball have really helped to.
Future sport additions:
Surfing
Chess
Ballroom Dancing
Frog Jumping
Bowling
Lawnmower Races
Eating Competitions
Darts
Juggling
"Fastest growing sport" doesn't mean anything. The smaller the amount of spectators a sport has, the easier it is to say that "the amount of spectators has doubled over the past year" or something to that effect.
If you start the year with 5 spectators and end the year with 15 spectators that means your fan base has grown by 200% (but it's still only 15 fans) Sirius will have to consult the Howie math textbook in order to spin this into a good pickup for the company. And I'm a dual subscriber, in case you're wondering....but Sirius has got to stop signing these crappy deals. (don't even get me started with the Jaime Foxx channel)
i can't believe sirius didn't mention this at ces. i guess they didn't want to blow their wad.
One of many Lacrosse organizations that has over a 200k membership did a demographic study of its membership and found:
US Lacrosse’s over 200,000 members are...
family oriented, educated, active and affluent!
Of our adult members:
* 59% are married with children
* 84% have a four-year college degree
* 46% have an annual household income over
$100,000 a year (67% over $50,000)
* 75% own their own home
* Running, golf and bicycling are the most popular
sports for lacrosse families

I wonder what the data is from Canada where Lacrosse is vastly more popular? I can understand why some make fun at the move by SIRIUS by looking at the demographics. Lack of knowledge is a fearful event.
rich, better sit down or you'll get dizzy from all that spinning. admit it, this contract is laughable.
its ok rich. you don't have to defend sirius to all the xm fans. baseball could switch to sirius and pfreak would say how stupid that was and how everyone he knows watches it on tv. and soccer is on sirius pfreak. now lets talk about listening to the pga on the radio.....
lets say this silly sport can sign up 50,000 in the US and Canada, because its nowhere else, that approx $600,000 a month. Not bad. I bet that the English league soccer might bring is 100,000 or so. In the small group of people I work with less than 15 there is 1 guy that likes soccer and was excited when I told him about the soccer on sirius, I know he will get sirius when he is ready to go to satrad
Wow, they readlly do have soccer? I had the service for a year and never even knew. What a complete waste. And by the way, PGA on the radio does indeed suck too.
Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the US, according to some, but it's not the fastest. According to George Carlin, it's not even a sport, it's a "faggot college activity." Others claim NASCAR is the fastest growing, while others say it's soccer. Amongst amateurs, bowling has seen a massive resurgence in the last several years, especially in high school athletics. But it doesn't mean the PBA should be broadcast on the radio.
Regardless, there are very few sports that translate well to radio (play-by-play, not simply discussion). Baseball is by far the best for radio, with football a close second. Basketball and hockey are almost too fast in terms of the amount of action and how quickly the ball/puck changes hands. It really depends on the announcer, so if the announcer blows, so will your listening of the game. I put lacrosse in the same category as hockey and basketball. Soccer is simply too boring for TV, let alone radio.
To sign a sport for broadcasting, just to say you have that sport, is silly for either company.
Baseball is by far the best sport for radio? That is probably true because it is by far the slowest most boring sport to WATCH, unless you are actually at the game.
Lacrosse sells out the Buffalo HSBC arena folks, as well as other arenas around the country. Watch a game and you'll be hooked. It's hard hitting and fast - sort of like hockey - fastest game on two feet!!
