Sirius Shuts Down 11 Repeaters
Sirius has filed a special temporary authority request with the FCC to turn back on 11 repeaters that were operating or built differently than the original specification.
The locations of 10 of the repeaters were slightly different than the original STA's terms (within 10 miles, and roughly half of them within 2 miles). Also, 10 out of the 11 were operating at or below the authorized power-levels and Sirius is not aware of any interference. Other out-of-spec issues include beamwidth, orientation, sectorization, or height.
Either way, their off now. Sirius is sorry, and they would really really like them turned back on. Pretty please FCC?

They only have 187 repeaters in the US, these 11 shouldnt be missed by many. Unlike XM who have 800 repeaters.

And those 800 really helped xm get more subs last quarter right?
These things are placed at cell towers and are springing up all over. i can't believe sirius got in trouble with the size of their cabinet. i work at cell towers and satellite radio repeaters are the least abtrusive.

Now that's a blast of pure reason. Stu-stu-stupid.

"And those 800 really helped xm get more subs last quarter right? "
NO... but they XM keep 'em.
Anyway... XM just shut some down too, to be FCC complient. Both companies are doing as they are told.

well icedick lets brag about xm's fucking repeaters then

Okay... The large number of XM repeaters gives me fewer drops and better reception, something that has been a PROVEN sorespot with many Sirius owners over on SBS. You can be in denial all you want about Sirius' horrific reception, but I don't have to worry about that thanks to XM's investment in technology from the get-go.

okay.....now prove how that helps get new subs. content wins.

It's kinda hard to listen to any content when you keep getting drops from not having a substantial repeater network, ain't it.
Technology is required before content.

icepik- Content brings the subs not the reception. And how is it that XM has a high churn?

Philadelphia is still down, been down for 3+ weeks. Several calls to Sirius CSR results in statements like "It should be back up soon" and "Maybe later this week".

these 11 ARE affecting lots of people in PA and Del. We haven't had Sirius since 10/16. Any idea when it will be back. Sirius staff doesn't know anything or isn't telling.

"okay.....now prove how that helps get new subs. content wins."
Yeah, that's what I thought too. Turns out you have to be able to hear the content for it to win. Who new? The Sirius dropouts in metro Los Angeles make it impossible to listen to. XM sounds a lot better.
Sarcasm aside, I think Sirius sounds great (content-wise) compared to XM but the signal issues chased me away. XM coverage is virtually flawless.

any time frame for when they will be back up....its hard to get a signal here in philly

It's end of January now, and Sirius repeaters are STILL down out here in the near suburbs of Philadelphia (Conshohocken to be exact).
It said in the original article that only 11 were taken down, I'm guessing that number needs some revision.
I actually got "Business Sirius" for my work's hold music... because we work in a high rise, and the repeaters have gone down, I've had to suspend my work subscription.
I wonder if there's any further word on this.
