Sirius Sportster 5: Up close and personal

Today I also had the chance to play with the new Sirius Sportster 5. As everyone knows, I'm a big proponent of color displays becoming the norm for satellite radios (if nothing else, to have them look like something from 2007, not 1997).

But the Sportster 5 doesn't just have a color display - Sirius took it a little further.

The Sportster 5 has the ability to change colors to match your car's dash lights. To many people, especially those who want to maintain a "factory look," this is extremely important. Have a green dash? No problem, the Sportster 5's color display, and the backlighting for the knobs and various buttons, all can change colors to match.

My only gripe is that the color display is a pretty poor resolution. It's not nearly as crisp and clean as I would have hoped. Combined with the abstracted channel artwork and the display will make many a passenger ask "what the heck is that?"

For future versions I'd like to see a higher resolution display, and some album art (or in-studio images) as icing on the cake. I understand that it can't be distracting (as you should be driving and not staring at your radio), but just as the PAD data changes, so should the imagery. Either way, that's my wishlist for future iterations. For now, let's just enjoy the multi-color chameleon backgrounds, and the bonus 60-minutes pause/replay buffer to boot.

WOW! That resolution is sure really LOW.... Better go for the Higher resolution XpressRC, nad the Why the F$ck are the letters in block? The RC looks better..a lot better

sorry, I didnt mean block, I ment, they just dont look as clean and crisp as the RCs

Wow- that looks awesome! The resolution won't be an issue because this radio sits 2.5 feet away on the dash board.

great looking color background..

sorry to say this... it is not very well made AND... it has PROBLEM!!!!!

1) FM transmitter's power is reduced to not usable at all...

2) The cradle and the radio is a MIS-MATCH.. you can not prog. the 'Parental Control'.. the default 0000 will not work UNLESS you dock it with Sportster 4's cradle... Tried it on 4 different unit for Circuit City.. all of the units are doing the same thing.

3) Menu occationally will lockup. Must power-down and power back up to make the radio work again.

4) This radio actually feels 'cheap' compare to the Sportster 4 it replaced.. the dial switch is very poorly made.. if you turn it too fast the channels will only move up or down by 2 or 3 channels at a time...

:(((((((((((((((((((((((((((

This is the worst unit....you cannot pick anything up using the FM transmitter. Sirius should be ashamed!!!!!

i have this unit and i think the volume it TOO quiet. I need to have my car raideos volume at 80% from max to get any decent sound form it. i don't know if this issue just lies with me but with the FM transmitter not working at all. im not all to impressed with this unit for the 200$
