Sirius StilettoLooks like the pre-order pages on SIRIUS Authorized Retailers websites like Crutchfield and TSS-Radio are now back online.

This news comes following information that Wistron NeWeb, the manufacturer of the Stiletto, has received FCC certification today for Stiletto and its car kit.

Meanwhile sources have indicated that the arrival date for the Stiletto is September 27th. This is not confirmed and may vary for different retailers, so let's just say "the end of the month or early October" to play it safe.

yippee!!!

A poster on xm411 has links to the pdf of the manual. Looks like the standard battery protrudes out the back, while the slim battery is the extra one that is flush. Also, the Wi-Fi seems to have limited usefulness outside of the home based on the types of networks it will work on. Finally, the storage of 2GB is misleading - the manual only allows 10 hours of "love" recordings (individual songs, compared to up to 50 hours on the Inno/Helix) -- it is pre-partioned for "love" recordings, bulk recordings of blocks of music (not sure if you can delete songs from the blocks) and MP3s.

"Love" recordings, you mean they don't even allow you to have live recordings? They must be love huh?

Satellite Radio Superstore is accepting pre-orders as well.

Interesting, when the S50 came out nobody cared that it could record 50hrs of programming. Just the fact that it was not live.

Now the Stiletto comes out as a live portable, and people start to criticize it for having limited recording abilities!

"Wi-Fi seems to have limited usefulness outside of the home based on the types of networks it will work on"

Someone was saying there is a workaround for that. Besides adding wi-fi at all is a step in the right direction.. riiiiiight? Future models may allow for authentication.

iband, you can thank the RIAA for that. going forward any portable dsr that allows you to save individual songs will be limited to 10 hours. even if you had a 4gb that could store 200 hours. the rest of the memory can be filled with mp3's and blocks of programming.

"Someone was saying there is a workaround for that. "

Someone said it, but he didn't know what he was talking about. If the network you're trying to connect to requires authentication (i.e., "logging in") you can't use it, and if the network requires you to accept a "user agreement" you're out of luck.

Probably a harmless but marginally useful addition -- but apt to generate a lot of hype in the media, which is just in time for Sirius.

Strangely, what would seem to be the most important functions for WiFi connectivity seem to have been left out (downloading content to the device either from either the Internet or a LAN, both which would seem to be much more useful than merely streaming 32kbps content from SIRI's servers).

"streaming 32kbps content from SIRI's servers"

What happened to the SIR at 128kbps?

You have to pay extra for Sirius Online Plus (CD quality). And thats for the PC, not this unit. And ive seen the pics of the actual unit. *hugs Inno*

I wanna know if I can download Yahoo music wireless ? .. This feature would make it worth $500.00 to me.

No more computer downloads..yeah baby... bring it home !

Wow guys, I've read the entire PDF manual, and you guys are spreading alot of misinformation here.

First, what makes you think the 128 stream is only for PC? Why would that be the case? You have made that up, with all do respect. In fact, I think its more plausible to believe that the announcement of 128 just weeks before the release of the stilletto means its for the stilletto too. Why wouldn't it be?

"Also, the Wi-Fi seems to have limited usefulness outside of the home based on the types of networks it will work on"

What is the basis for this statement? The PDF specifically discusses how to login to networks which require authentication. So, yea, you can't use someone's wireless network without their permission, but that's no different for any laptop either. The point is, if its a free hot-spot or if your at work and have the authority/password you should be able to use the wireless network, just like you could with your laptop.

Why do you people post so much mis-information? Did you also post the information that Stern is going to terrestrial radio?

>>> What is the basis for this statement? The PDF specifically discusses how to login to networks which require authentication.

You're confusing "authentication" with "encryption". The device will handle the encryption used in wireless networks. But some networks require you to "logon" and be authenticated as a legitimate user to have access. Many networks also require the MAC address of the device to be authorized.

>>>> The point is, if its a free hot-spot or if your at work and have the authority/password you should be able to use the wireless network, just like you could with your laptop.

This is partially correct. Many free "hot spots" (e.g., hotel lobbies) require you to accept "terms of use" using a web browser before you are granted access. These will be inaccessible to the Stiletto since it lacks any browsing capability. Otherwise, free hotspots should be fine.

As to offices, some will allow this kind of use, but many won't. If you would be allowed by your employer to stream Sirius to your PC desktop, I suspect they're fine with the Stiletto, too. Of course, why do you need the Stiletto in that situation?

>>>> First, what makes you think the 128 stream is only for PC?

First, let's see whether any such 128kbps streams exist -- all I've seen to date is rumor and speculation. If it turns out they have 128kbps streams, it is entirely possible (even likely) that those who pay the extra fee for it would be able to receive them via this device. But a review of Sirius press releases indicates they have not made a statement about it.

The business case for the 128kbps is pretty hard to make -- not enough people will pay the extra $3/month to cover the cost of the additional bits plus the fixed overhead costs of maintaining two sets of streams. If they want to provide it to enhance the service, that would be great -- just don't charge for it.

Because the internet stream has 0 sports channels. besides Stern that's all I listen to during the day.

I don't think I need the 100. I was all hyped about the s50 recording capaility and never really used the function.

The inno would be awesome if it worked with sirius. Since it doesn't, its worthless.

Okay, I think I got it. Sirius has Stern. XM doesn't have Stern. Stern is the only content on all of radio that is worth listening to.

Why bother with 120 other channels?

let me clarify. XM and Sirius both have music, right?

XM doesn't have:
NFL,
ESPNRAdio
ESPNews
NBA package
NCAA package
Stern

All important satellite radio features for me(maybe not for you). I didn't buy SatRad ONLY for music. In fact, I bought Sirius for everything BUT music since I can get music anywhere anywhere on this wonderful thing called the internet. All those other things are time sensitive features that can't be gotten easily anywhere but Sirius. Since the internet stream only plays 1 of those 6 things I mentioned, its not helping me at work. Since XM has zero of those 6 things period, XM is worthless to me. Get it now?

acually , xm has ESPN radio and ESPNews so now your down to 4 . in the case of music your punk rock channel is a punk rock/rock/rap combo (that my brother who has had sirius for 6 months) and he says sucks compared to XM because it only has time to play hit songs . my sport is weight lifting i don't care about football or baseball just talk radio and great music . although the stiletto looks great i'll stick with my inno .

I am hoping that authentication will likely be supported later in time. This would support some 'network' hotspots, namely with 802.1X authentication such as T-mobile Hotspots and BOINGO Wireless. Most of the major 'networked' hotspots companies support 802.1X authentication.

As for supporting 'captive portal' sites, such as in some hotels, etc. that redirect you to a web page to accept terms or login. That feature isn't available. However other WIFI enabled devices do support it (without a full browser). It's possible they could add this in a firmware update, I don't know how much demand there is.

If this problem affects you (or the 802.1X login issue), then you should definitely make your thoughts known once the product launches and it is proven that these things aren't supported. It's likely they can release a new firmware to allow them if there is enough demand.

However, the Stiletto does support WPA-PSK authentication and WEP according to the manual. This should take care of the majority of home and small business networks.

From what I see it doesn't support WPA using RADIUS (WPA Enterprise / WPA with ID/Pass), but will have to wait and see if this is certain. Also, it does not support 'hidden networks', namely networks that do not broadcast a SSID. Some Linksys (and other brand) devices allow you to do this, but the devices are usually set to broadcast a SSID by default.
