Just 2 weeks after its debut, the Sirius XM iPhone App has surpassed more than 1 million downloads. But what continues to amaze me is that the App has remained as the #1 top free music App - having reached that status only 12 hours after its launch.
All this, despite not featuring Howard Stern.
"Reaching
more than 1 million downloads so quickly is a strong testament to our
world-class programming and Sirius XM's instant brand recognition,"
said Sirius XM Radio Inc. President and Chief Content Officer Scott Greenstein. "Our goal is to give people access to the best audio entertainment
wherever they go with what we think is the best music and audio entertainment
application available on the App Store."
You know what would be a masterful move? To wait until the momentum begins to wane, and then issue an App update which would include additional features and the "contractual rights" issues with Stern would get magically fixed.
...or maybe to execute the above "updates" in phases, to maintain that momentum over an extended period of time.

The only reason why people are downloading it is because Apple changed their policy of rating an app without buying it first. Look ate the ratings, people hate the app for a number of reasons.
GREAT PRODUCT, LOVE SIRIUSXM, BUT THE STOCK STILL CONTINUES TO DO NOTHING. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS CO? Are we headed for delisting and or reverse split.
and here we go..... let the insane comments begin about Stern's revelance and how O&A are responsible for the app's success. Rumor has it that the app is not well reviewed. As soon as the "contractual issues" are fixed I'm jumping aboard with the app until then I keep listening via Pockettunes...........
There'd be even more if the Canadian App store had it available to download.
The momentum caught everyone by surprise, I think, but the effect should be scaring the hell out of SXM management.
37999 of 57252 reviewers rated the app one star. That's a bomb. And these users are likely reviewing the app as they uninstall it, since that's when apple asks for a 1-5 rating.
I think the interest in Sirius XM was way higher than expected. And the execution was worse.
So what is SXM gonna do about it?
Maybe they could include o n a.
I'm sure if they did, it would double or triple the downloads as the roach army has a lot of influence in the entertainment world.
This is all well and good, but what about an official Windows Mobile app? They wouldn't get as much press but come on there are way more WinMo phones out there.
Can you find out how many people deleted the App after the free trail ? And why not talk about the rating for this app ?
So what took them so long?
Now if AT&T can deliver us a halfway decent 3G network that doesn't go down & cut out so often, we'll be in business.
This is more a testament to the people signing up for the free trials than anything else, Dummy Greenstein. I think that of those one million, many (like me!) downloaded the app on day one not realizing Howard wasn't on it. I haven't used it even once!
Just because something has been downloaded a million times means that it's a good thing or even a success. I would be curious how many people actually continuing using this app after the trial period. I downloaded it, discovered there was no Howard Stern and immediately deleted it. I represent 1/1,000,000 of that group. This app is just the Transformers movie for apps.
How many of that 1 million kept the application on their phone and are paying for subscriptions? I am technically still an XM subscriber even though I every time I call to cancel they keep giving me free time to change my mind. I was really looking forward to this app to change my mind, but when I found out there were additional fees, I am doubtful I will keep service (I will take all the free service, though ;)).
With free options like Slacker and Pandora, why would I pay for the same music? Sirius/XM really missed the boat here. They should be focusing on the content that differentiates them (Opie&Anthony, Stern, MLB, NFL, etc.) from these services. People have been talking about this app for close to a year and the fact they have not been able to work through these contractual issues is very disappointing.
But how will they monetize this to the company's benefit? I still expecto to see another major, major sub loss announcement.
P.S. - Please tell Mell to stop pitcing the free app every break. It's getting rather annoying.
What about all of us in Canada?
When will we get to see the Sirius app for our iphones?
Who wants to bet that Howard will still take credit for this App's success? It will have to wait till he returns form yet another long vacation break.
Ok 1 Million downloads and how many people deleted it right after they downloaded it?
Well you can start with me.... 1
THE APP IS GREAT PERIOD END OF STORY.
NOT ONE APP OUT THERE THAT HAS THE BEST TALK "AND"
MUSIC!
ITS NOT FEATURED BY APPLE ON THE ITUNES SITE BECAUSE IT SUCKS COME GUYS WITH THE CRYING AND BASHING.
I was one of the 1 million downloads, but I only had it for the week trial. With the fee increase for subs coming due to the royalties I can't see paying even more for the service just to listen to it on my iPhone. Should be available free to subs or at least people with multiple subs.
Hmmm... 38k complaints/bitching/whining out of 1,000,000+ downloads of a first release app. Not bad at all. That's less than 4%.
And all that without the almighty Howard.
Scary to say, but that alone will probably raise an eyebrow or two when Stern sits down to renegotiate in the extremely near future. Think he will still want to be around when they offer him 400% less than his previous coup?
Rosie O'Donnell is the future of satellite radio - shoot me now.
Have any of you actually read the comments on the bad reviews? 9.5 out of 10 of them are one star b/c of no Stern...which is a legitimate gripe, but most of them say nothing bad about the actual app. The app itself is not a piece of crap, its actually quite good.
Yes and yes. This company is going down the tubes.
This app like siriusxm is a turd. It takes a few days for people to figure it out but soon enough most come around and realize paying for radio is for newbs and suckers. Melvin can fool the ignorant with his "merge" MONOPOLY games but most iPhone users understand that there is much more and better media available on the iPhone without having the siriusxm app wasting space. A million might have downloaded this mess, and way over 3/4's of a million have already deleted it for the trash it is.
I find it very interesting how deep the hatred and jealousy of Mel, Howard and Sirius is. It only proves how powerful of a platform they have and why they are the leader of the digital revolution and why these little NAB testicle radio panzies are getting more and more desperate by the day. The level of envy and hope for failure is at a new high and the further along Mel takes Sirius, the louder and more frequent the cries are. This site is a sesspool of these types of anonymous losers that have multiple screen names, pid by an almost bankrupt Clear Channel.
More and more reason to keep loading up on this stock and why Sirius will continue to slowly drain the listeners from terrrestrial.
terrestrial is dead
It is funny that out of 23 comments, most if not all are negative. I am a Sirius XM subscriber, downloaded the app, and use it every day. If someone actually used the service, he would know what value it has. Because the majority has written something negative about it, it leads me to say BULLSHIT!!! I want to thank these Sirius bashers to allow me to accumulate more and more shares at prices that will triple in the next few months.
I totally agree with Joe Smith in regard to the app. It's fantastic and I am an old XMer who doesn't give a crap about Howard. I use it every day and appreciate that the sound quality over wifi is so much better than my portable inno.
The bad reviews are not a reflection of the app because a) they are almost all about Howard Stern not being on the app and b) if 1million downloaded, there are clearly a lot of people using the app who haven't rated it. They're probably just enjoying using it.
I guess I feel for the Howard Stern fans that their favorite shock jock isn't on the app, but I always worry about them. Seriously, you can't listen to any other music or talk on the app? Do you just listen to Howard Stern 24 hours a day? Also, serious question, do you guys all live in New Jersey?
On an unrelated note, Joe Smith, I wouldn't get my hopes up about making shed tons of money on this company...
haters, haters, haters, just cancel your acct. with sirius and go back to FM radio and enjoy!!!
@ iloveoprah
Does it really matter why they like Howard? Who cares they choose to spend $12 (or more now) a month to listen to him thats their perogative. I am sure MANY of them listen to alot more than you think but for them on their morning drive Howard is what it's all about for them.
I picked up Sirius (two years after his move to Sirius) for Howard every morning I listen and at work and during the drive home and any other time I listen to other channels. Who cares why I or any other people got Sirius/XM we all have specific reasons for it and lets face it each reason is a legitimate reason as they wouldn't get that kinda content on terrestrial.
I think people are a bit upset Howard isn't on there cause at the end of the day with the facts it doesn't seem like "rights" issues are exactly the reason why. Could be wrong but this is the thoughts of many out there, plus when Sirius announced it was a making an app Howard talked it up how awesome it would be to have his shows available on an iPhone.
I am overall very happy with the app. Guess Howard isn't as big of a deal afterall?
For the "merge monopoly" idiots, what is done is done... Get over it.
If Howard were on the app all 1 million downloads would have been because of him. Since he's not, it's a failure and all 1 million people deleted it the moment they realized Howard wasn't on it.
It's only rated poorly because of disgruntled Howard fans giving it one star, everyone else is enjoying it.
And the reason Howard isn't on it is because he wants more money to be on it. It's not "out of his hands". Anyone that believes Howard wouldn't be on it tomorrow if he wanted are only lying to themselves.
I figured I would give it a try. I have a premium streaming account so no problems. Start to click on stations and I need to upgrade to best of XM too. I have not deleted it yet but I will. Why list the stations I do not get?
The bad reviews are 40% Howard, 20% lack of sports, and 40% outrage at paying an online streaming fee.
This company is starting to remind me of Blockbuster Video!
Eventually, the app has got to bring in new subs, because how else with no retail and few car sales would anyone join SXM?
I would think that 38K 1-star ratings is not an issue and could be viewed positively if this is occurring when people uninstall the application.
1 Million copies downloaded.
- 38K Negative reviews (mostly Stern fans)
- 20K positive reviews
------------------------------
942K people who did not provide a rating because they either 1) did not uninstall the application or 2) did not provide a rating.
942K unaccounted votes is much more significant than the 38K unhappy Stern fans
I dont know who to believe. You guys confuse me. I have had Sirius for 7 years and wont get rid of it. 3 Subs + internet all day in the office. I have too many shares to bother telling you about. $3 would be great. Switching from BBerry to Iphone this month. Not sure how it will work out but I do know that my 2 stilettos, and s50 are working great. Howard needs to get back to work. Replays suck.
I find it funny 38,000 people rate it one star, but 1,000,000 downloaded it.
I would say that is a huge success!
Wait till they release apps for other smart phones!
When clear channel goes bankrupt, Sirius will get Rush Limbaugh and 10 - 30 million more subs! IMHO
Terrestrial radio is a dead business model, stale play lists and annoying commercials. IMHO
Why would a company with a namesake like Howard Stern put him on a app that isnt specifically related to Howard. Why do think his website is seperate from sirius'? After this app runs flat, they will release a Howard Stern app. Most of you think Howard is missing because of money, he is under contract, his contract allows him the rights to his own content. Why clump his product with the likes of O&A, oprah, or the narrow music channels. You people underestimate a person who has decades under his belt in radio and showbiz. The only reason this app would get low ratings is because so many of you want satrad to be more like an mp3 player rather than what it is, an fm radio replacement.
I'd be willing to bet most of the bad reviews/ bad ratings came straight from the spouse of the horses mouth.
Howard had to have told his minons to do so. And the hoo hoo heads followed suit.

1 mil without the king of all mediocre programming. I thought everyone who subscribed did so just for Stern, there goes that theory.
this app is flat, and Howard Stern will be back on good old FM radio soon.
It is not an FM Radio replacement. Satrad was an alternative to FM which offered programming not available to the FM masses. New music, uncensored comedy, uncensored talk, etc. Replacement implies it offers the same things (the direction of the music channels) as what FM offers. HD Radio would be considered a replacement.
You're still here? LOL! So, you expect consumers to pay for new, shitty HD radios that don't even work? On all of our cars we dropped Satrad, after the three month trial periods. Satrad is no better than testicular radio on steriods. BTW - the new Webcaster Settle Act breaths new life into Internet Radio - Pandora, Last.fm, Slacker, etc shall live an rule! Who the Hell needs testicular and Satellite radio, when one can create their own "personalized" playlists!

Sirius XM’s app has an average rating of just two stars out of a possible five. Of its 56,952 user reviews, just 8,822 give it five stars. But 37,818 rate it a single star. And most of those do so citing Stern’s absence as the reason. So while it’s true that Sirius XM Premium Online is the the top free app in the music category, it’s also seems to be its leading disappointment. Makes you wonder how many of those one million downloads were deleted, either after the user noticed Stern’s absence or the $2.99/month subscription fee. (from Digital Daily)
"Who the Hell needs testicular and Satellite radio, when one can create their own "personalized" playlists!"
I'll listen to Satrad to hear music I wouldn't know to add to my "personalized" playlists.
I easily tire of listening to what I have already heard. If you want new and fresh SIRIXM is a logical choice. 'Satrad is no better than testicular radio on steriods.' is a stupid and uninformed opinion, but you're entitled to it.
One million Downloads..... But How many deletions? The app itself is nice, but after listening to FM Radio without commercials and intrusive DJs, it isn't even worth it.
Oh pocketradio..... So desperate to try and spam about HD Radio when in fact it is only getting more and more popular. As we have seen even a little tech company called microsoft is including HD Radio technology in some of it's products. Oh well pocketradio your FUD is called out yet again. Nice try, it must be so sad to be pocketradio watching HD Radio grow larger and larger making the future of AM and FM radio bright. SO bright that even Howard Stern is being forced to return to good old FM radio with HD Radio.
Back to pocketradio aka tinky winky land were truth is avoided and FUD and ignorance are the name of the game.

Four things that most blinded idiots fail to see:
When you skim the 1-star/2-star reviews, they are mostly whining that Howie is not on the app. The app is not bad, the people reviewing it just don't like it because Howard isn't on it.
There is no possible way to see who deletes this app, so saying that "1 million people deleted it" is just ignorant speculation. I'm sure a lot of people still have this app despite not including Stern, because, as hard as it might be to believe, some people like to listen to Sirius XM's music content .
Howard doesn't want to be on the app. It's that simple. So, don't hate Sirius XM for it, hate your money hungry hero. He is not an idiot, he probably said give me more money and I'll do it. It's anybody's guess why he wanted to be excluded, but it's not Sirius XM's choice, they aren't that stupid either.
One more thing that isn't completely correct, but is partially true is that O and A are driving sales. Since they talk about the app, of course some people will go and check it out, and those people probably don't care one way or another that Stern isn't on the app, therefore they keep it. However, this can be said for all the other channels mentioning the app, and their listeners doing the exact same thing.
I have to give Sirius XM credit on this one. The iPhone app works perfectly. I have had zero issues with it and am enjoying it. People are blaming Sirius XM for Howard Stern not being available but Howard Stern himself should be blamed. I know Sirius XM is filled with incompetence but they are not that incompetent. If Sirius XM could broadcast Howard Stern’s channels on the iPhone app they would. They can’t because Howard Stern would want more money. That is the only explanation here. Sirius XM is not intentionally deciding let’s not include Howard Stern just for the hell of it. You would have to be retarded to believe that. For once I can actually say stop blaming Sirius XM. Blame Howard Stern if you want to blame anyone.
Commonsense, if your belief is correct that means Howard Stern is easily the biggest piece of shit in all of media. Is this man god or something? He is above everyone else? It is all about Howard Stern apparently. Screw the rest of Sirius XM. What bullshit. Howard Stern is easily the most selfish prick to be employed by Sirius XM if that is the case. Sirius XM didn’t sign him to be his own product. He was signed to help the Sirius XM product. There will never be an app dedicated to Howard Stern. He is either part of the Sirius XM app service or not. By the way there are many Sirius XM hosts who have there own separate website and are under contract by Sirius XM. That is absolutely a meaningless and false statement.
i downloaded this app and the only thing that is keeping me from deleting it is the simple hope that sirixm will eventually offer the premium streaming for a one-time flat rate. otherwise, i would have deleted it upon arrival. no, not because stern was not a part of the lineup. sterns were the first channels i removed from my lineup. i would have deleted it because i could not use my 32k stream for this app. i'm a lifetime subscriber. i went lifetime so i would not have to pay anymore to get this service. had i known beforehand that a premium subscription would be required, i wouldn't have bothered downloading this. at the very least i would have thought that allowing lifetime members access but at the free 32k bitrate would have been the fair thing to do but they chose not to do this. let me be clear- i am not in favor of this app not because i can't pay the extra 2.99 a month. i can, but since there is no option for lifers to subscribe to the upgraded stream for a one-time payment, i'm not going to get it. i'm not for this app because i have an online subscription, but they want me to pay more because i don't have the right online subscription. so as it stands right now, i'm listening to my talk stations in 32kbs in the car (which sounds really good btw) using other apps which is the only thing i listen to on the service. if i want to listen to music, well, isn't that what the "ipod" section of the iphone is for?
here's the thing that should make a lot of people mad who were upset about the rate increases- remember how much of an online campaign sirixm put on telling people that they need to hurry and lock in the lower rates by march 11 (and you get the free 32k stream btw which is also going away)? how much less of an outrage would there be if they said straight up that the new app would require the 128k stream?
when given a pr choice since merger of either option a or b, sirixm seems to take option c, which wasn't offered and was the worst option available.
I know that this is not in context with the article but I'd like to say that I find your new drop from the top advertising extremely distracting and annoying. Every time I scroll to where I want to read that thing pops down and blocks where I'm reading. Then I have to close it. I'm not reading it believe me so it's not working as an ad. If you frustrate people who arrive at your site they will stop arriving.
ctkatz,
Face it siriusxm suckered you into paying for a lifetime subscription. siriusxm will be gone in the next few years, they have lost millions of dollars and millions of subscribers and the debt is growing by the day. siriusxm isn't in it for the long haul, they are suckering consumers like yourself. Don't feel too bad though, siriusxm fooled the FCC into thinking a "merge" wouldn't be a MONOPOLY. You'd be smart to delete this virus off your iPhone, this isn't the first, nor will it be the last time siriusxm will sucker it's customers. Melvin will always be out nickle and dimeing with his tin can.
This app proves yet again paying for radio is for newbs and suckers.
Wow, this is probably the most idiotic Stern-Zombie post I have ever read.
Howard is old news. I love the service. I can't find anything that compares to it. Even my dad, who isn't great with technology and doesn't like paying for services like this, just got a 2 year subscription after losing his free service in his car. He loves the Greatful Dead channel and the alternative rock stations. My friends have Sirius and love it. I recently got two of my co workers to subscribe. Everyone has a right to hate the service, but I on the other hand will be a subscriber until the service ends. I got my first XM subscription when I was 16, two and a half years ago. Had I been that age when satrad was formed, i, along with my father, would be subscribers from the beginning.
This App sucks, it's not really free, you have to pay and the programming sucks . Sirius XM sucks, it's like FM with no commercials.
Rememer, XM had nearly 10 million subs without Howard. Too much credit goes to this guy, and he had nothing to do with the amount of subs that signed up for XM. The app is too expensive for the iphone, if you don't get all the content then how can you charge the same price as a radio sub?
I downloaded the app to have for a free week, then unless they lower the price to $6 bucks, then it will be deleted.
The real numbers (is Sirius releases them) will actaully be who is going to pay for it. Millions download free apps but only some pay for them.
HELLO... hellloooww.. ....ellloooowwwww ....eellllloooooooowwwwwww
RYAN ..Rryyann ..yyaaaannnn....?? Are you still here? ..heerre? .....eeere
Say goodbye to the SXM iphone app, as of today it is #25 on the free downloads and about to fall off the charts entirely.
Ryan is looking for good Sirius XM news, but there is not.
The Sirius XM app for free! That's a lie.
Yeah Ryan what gives? No updates for nearly a week.
Surely there has to be news. Maybe you can talk about O n A since no one else is.
Maybe you can ask them what the view is like from total obscurity.
Keeping pest under control for 50 years. I'm the Orkin Man.
Hasn't Stern been on vacation since 2006?
10 days without anything going on. Sirius/XM really sucks.
or Ryan has just given up on his site

Yes, this site is RIP and has been for a long time. No forum and 1 article per month and no matter what the topic, it winds up being Stern vs OA arguments - pathetic.
They hate it because there is no Howard on it. The Howard factor makes the user ratings irrelevant. From competent users who have used, they all at least think its decent to great. NO one hated it, or complained about anything resembeling a fatal flaw in it. You should think before you post. Try it. Its fun.
THIS IS/WAS A VERY GOOD SITE FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS THAT I KNOW I HOPE THERE ON VACATION. THANKYOU FOR THE GOOD READING
Just for kicks, I listened to Howard's first show back after his most recent vacation. Or as much of it as I could stand.
Everywhere I went, people were asking me what my opinion was on the Michael Jackson thing, hoo hoo. I couldn't wait to get back on the air to talk about it, hoo hoo. Now some fake prank phone calls. Terrible. This is the #1 radio show?!? Well, it sounds like #2. Meaning, crap.
O&A predicted what he was going to say two weeks before he said it, and they were exactly right. There is not one ounce of originality or passion left in Howard's show. I've never heard a person less interested to be doing radio. Anthony Cumia does a better Howard than Howard does at this point.
Ratings be damned, there is no reason to pay this fool a penny.
Retire.
Well Smiteboy we all know you're a closet listener.
Who really cares about MJ? Do you? If o n a could predict what Howard was going to say before he does then why does their show suck and their ratings suck?
o n a made a lot of predictions - we'll change the face of NY radio and they certainly did that. Wasn't there something about how they were going be the top show? Nostradamus neither of those two trannies are.
Funny I never had the desire to listen to o n a and would rather take a dump than tune them in.
Is this the only way o n a can get publicity when drones like yourself have to mention those two has beens?
I'm the Orkin Man keeping "pests" under control.
I admit Howard's show is inferior to his FM shows. Which is why I love the SiriusXM app! This app is the only way I can get Jay Thomas, O&A, Alex Bennett, Ron & Fez and about 10 other channels that I trust and depend on. I went out and bought an iTouch just for this purpose. $2.99/mo is nothing, and I don't even have a job. It's amazing how people bitch and moan about such a trivial amount. I have 3 subs (including one with Howard) and they're worth every penny. I have the AOL radio app and the Talk radio app also. All 3 are great little apps, quite frankly, but the exclusive content on the SiriusXM app makes it the winner.
It's easy to get 1 million downloads with a free app...once people see that they have to pay $13 a month to listen to that awful programming, they issue their one-star rating.
These sat-rad douche-suits are obviously continuing with a terrible business model that is only about milking as much money as possible out of each subscriber while providing less content.
Please, O&A could not hold on to *ANY* FM stations that were in fact HANDED TO THEM... They are B-O-R-I-N-G!! WXRK was rated #21 during the O&A tenure in their HOME market.. The new NOW 92.3 (top 40) is getting higher ratings than O&A..
Oh I'm sure smitebore and the other fruits who worship o n a will tell you those numbers were skewed or part of some conspiracy to keep them down. Or maybe they were number one. Yeah right, that's why they are unemployable in regular radio. Bubba has higher ratings then o n a ever had.
Don't you know? o n a are the greatest show no one listens to or cares about.
They will continue to toil in mediocrity forever. When Stern does retire, they still won't succeed. Even on his deathbed, Stern would generate higher ratings and listenership then thow two losers.
Funny how the SRI/XM app is now not even ranked in the top 50 on iTunes. Pandora is still there... been there for over a year.
