Sirius XM iPhone App made official

UPDATE: The Sirius XM iPhone App is now available!

Sirius XM on iPhoneOne of the major unveilings at today's earnings call was that Sirius XM Radio Inc. confirmed what sources close to the company told Orbitcast in the beginning of this month - that an official Sirius XM iPhone App was indeed in development.
"On another exciting front we have been testing a number of initiatives to make the Sirius XM content and experience more ubiquitous," said Jim Meyer, Sirius XM President of Operations and Sales. "Sirius XM has been working on an application that will allow subscribers to stream our internet content to their iPhones and iPod Touch devices."

Sources told Orbitcast that the Sirius XM iPhone App would be available for free to subscribers, and would stream the Internet Radio service direct to Apple's iPhone and iTouch devices.

"When released, this application will permit an estimated 7 million U.S. iPhone users and additional iTouch users to access Sirius and XM internet content," said Meyer during the call. "This will allow existing subscribers with a paid streaming subscription to access our content."

The company added that the upcoming iPhone App will also allow new customers to subscribe to our service without having to buy a radio.

"This is a large an interesting opportunity that will maintain our subscription based economics while providing customers easier access to our content through means other than our traditional satellite based platform," Meyer continued. "We are currently in rigorous applications testing and plan to launch in the second quarter."

What are LUCY, TOP TRACKS, and XM CAFE? Are thoes new channels for the App?

Those are old stations its just a mock up. I cant wait for this, the sooner the better with this app, finally can take Pandora off my iphone. I was sad deleting the Starplyr beta the other day, now I can smile

I beleive they are old XM stations that were rebranded/removed when they merged the line-ups.

That's an old iPhone App mockup from last summer - I apologize for the confusion from the channels being shown. I'll get another mockup later tonight.

It's too bad Lucy wasn't on there. I miss that Station.

How about a Verizon Dare app.

There are a few Blackberrys out there! What about a BB app?

I'm really up for this. I just hope that the Nicemac people didn't get screwed.

I thought this was already known. How about when they plan to release it.

They did not say it was the second quarter of this year or next year. They have been sooo slow in getting this done I have to wonder. Get on it and release it now!

When I was a windows mobile user, I listened on my phone at work, but since I switched to the iphone, and I barely drive anymore, there was no point to having a subscription. When this app comes out, I'll most probably sign up again for the internet stream! good job sirius!

fuck mel. it's the hardware cost stupid. oh, and fuck howard too. and fuck anthony and opie and everybody

thj

Now debt-ridden, failing, desperate siriusxm is hitching its lies to the iPhone... Whats funny is most with a iPhone are smart enough to:

A)Know the iPhone is a handheld computer and has many other better and free options when it comes to audio choices.

B)Know any siriusxm app is a crutch

C)See right through Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin lies.

what are they going to do about us windows mobile users? sure, siriusWM5 still works, but starplayr is a better app.

@Ranger: Note the bolded sentence in the post, they plan on releasing it in the 2nd quarter of this year.

No, Pandora, AOL Radio etc are not better options as they dont offer me my full slate of sports coverage, they dont have howard or bubba or scotty f. They dont have Jay Thomas, or Jim Breuer, yes they have music, but thats a bonus to a sub like me.....to have music on my sirius, hey but it appears you dont like it, but I love the hate you put out there

So again...The Blackberry users have to bend over and pay an extra $7/month to get it streaming on their BB phone vs. Iphone users get it free??? Why? Can someone explain why they would do this?

Wouldn't it be cheaper, faster, and better PR to buy uSirius/Starplayr? Why reinvent the wheel and waste MORE money? Release the effing thing already.

Note that the second quarter begins in 3 weeks.

Than G-D Ryan. Now we just need Sirius to pick up MLB and the 2 biggest issues are solved. How could Sirius even consider going into the regular season with baseball only available to XM subs?

Hopefully after the iPhone app they hit Blackberry and all other phones as well.

MUSCLE13,

The perception is that these are still two seperate companies. They need to simplify everything, starting with running this enterprise as if it was ONE company, not two. No wonder some people have no idea that a merger took place!

Now if they could only give me back my online access! I paid for a 3-year plan to lock me in on my rates and was supposed to get online access for free, but every since yesterday I haven't been able to get online. I called them and they could only tell me that they knew about it and were working on it. This is making me mad!

I may be mistaken, but I was under the assumption, that Sirius did not have enough bandwidth to carry the MLB, NHL, PGA and all college basketball games along with all the NFL, Nascar and NBA games? Am I wrong?

Can someone explain why Sirius gave the guys at Nicemac a deadline to be done with the app? Instead of telling them they were wasting time since their own app was already in the works? And then they release an outdated photoshopped pic??? Now we have to sit tight with our hands over our asses patiently waiting AGAIN... Nice...

The wireless service providers should block Mel's half baked, cockamayme, doomed to fail, iPhone, iTouch streaming plans. Talk about a waste of bandwidth.

Ryan - I was just goofing on the fact that Sirius killed these channels. Trying to bust Sirus/XM's horns, not yours bro.

here's the question, if no one is going to pay $13 a month to listen to FM Radio without commercials, what makes them think they're going to pay $13 a month to listen to FM Radio without commercials on their iPhone? When there are so many other ways to listen. Whether it's the has-been shock jocks (Howie, O&A, Tubby the Love Sponge), the washed up comedians (Breuer, Jay Thomas), or the All the all Martha Stewart/Oprah channels, what really is there that makes it worth paying good money for radio? I say nothing.

Steve:
I don’t know what problems you are having, but I extended my plans for 3 years and mine is working fine. Have you logged into your account on the Sirius web site and set up your free Internet radio account? If you already set it up, maybe you just need to change your password (so you know what it is) using your online account.

Here is the URL to sign in and make the updates:

How about this. Cancel your Sirius subscriptions, pirate the shows you listen to, and import them through itunes.

If Sirius is determined to prevent their fans from listening on the iphone, F Them. The stiletto is garbage with terrible reception even outdoors. Even the newer radios have terrible quality unless directly connected.

As an early beta tester of the NiceMac/Geek's Toolbox applications, including the iPhone app, I can say that their USirius was extremely well-executed and I had virtually no bugs or defects in running it. I was very disappointed when the test abruptly ended and the iPhone, Macintosh, and Windows SiriusXM players were effectively turned off when the servers supporting them were no longer available.

So, now we are waiting for SiriusXM to reinvent the wheel. Unbelievable!

I find it amazing that some people think pandora and Sirius Xm are even in the same catagory!!!! I could not live without my Sirius Xm radio. The numbers show that millions of other people feel the same!!! Howard Stern introduced so many of those listeners to the world of Sirius Xm ( myself included). I know when I google info about getting Sirius on iPhones, fellow apple users are so excited for this app!!!!

You cannot stream audio by way of the cell phone network. It's physically impossible.
