Sirius XM makes "Best Of" and A La Carte official - Orbitcast
Satellite RadioSirius XM Radio Inc. have officially announced what we've all known for a few days now: that the Best of Sirius and Best of XM (as well as the first-ever A La Carte radio) packages are now available.

Some subscribers have learned that some of their radios are not compatible with the Best Of packages. The company addresses this, albeit without further details, in the press release by stating that: "Most subscribers can add the premier programming without purchasing a new radio."

If you want to add "The Best of Sirius" channels to XM, call 1-866-9SIRIXM (866-974-7496) or Sirius subscribers can add "The Best of XM" channels by calling 1-888-7BESTXM (888-723-7896). And yes, both Sirius.com and XMradio.com now have full details.

In a separate press release, Sirius XM officially unveiled the Starmate 5, which is immediately available now from many online retailers (*cough* such as Orbitcast's own sponsors *cough*).

I still have some questions (such as the NBA, lifetime subs, and radio compatibility) about the Best Of upgrades that I'm hoping on answering today. If you have questions yourself, please submit a comment to this post and I'll do my best to get them answered.

I would like to know when I can add an XM receiver to my existing Sirius Account to get a family/multiple radio discount.

I can not see how this WOULD NOT be allowed.

What exactly is the issue that is preventing some radios from not being able to subscribe to the service particularly OEM radios.

I'm a Sirius subscriber, and have a question on the "best of XM". Do you think these are going to be the final packages, or are these starting out packages to see how the public reacts? There are quite a few XM music and talk stations I like that I would love to see added to the "Best of XM". To expand on that, I would hope the "Best of XM" is more than a handful of channels. Isn't that a slap in the face to XM programing?

Any word on interoperable receivers and sub plans for those radios? I know it was supposed to be some time toward the end of 08 beginning of 09.

i have a lifetime sub although my radio doesn't work anymore i still listen on line. can i get these shows on line with my subscription?

Interesting part...

"SIRIUS subscribers can add "The Best of XM" channels featuring...play-by-play of select NBA and NHL games..."

(Emphasis added)

SELECT games?? Not all??

I FOUND OUT THAT OUT OF MY 4 RADIOS ON MY ACCOUNT ONLY 2 WILL QUALIFY FOR THE BEST OF PROGRAMMING. MY ORBITER AND SIRIUS 1 ARE NOT ELIGIBLE.THE STARMATE AND THE SPORTSTER 4 ARE.I WENT OUT INTO MY ACCOUNT AND CLICKED ON MY EXISTING RADIOS AND IT WILL TELL YOU YAY OR NAY.I TOO WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE OF XM CHANNELS OFFERED ON SIRIUS.PERHAPS OVER TIME AND LIKE PREVIOUS COMMENTS THIS IS JUST A STARTER.I FOR ONE WANT XM PUBLIC RADIO. THEY HAVE SHOWS THAT PRI HAD BEFORE IT LEFT SIRIUS . I DID TRY TO ACTIVATE ON LINE AND IT WONT TAKE MY CREDIT CARD INFO. IVE TRIED 16 TIMES. I GUESS I HAVE TO CALL/ITS THE CARD THAT IVE BEEN USING FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS TO PAY FOR MY SERVICE..GO FIGURE.

Ryan, is there any word on why all third party XM Online apps have stopped functioning?

Thanks

So far, it sounds like Chrysler and BMW radios can't get the best of. Doesn't sound like most radios to me. I smell a class action suit.

Ryan, is there any word on why all third party XM Online apps have stopped functioning?

Thanks

What about MLB and Indy Racing broadcasts for those of us on Sirius?

The question is if they really are one company why treat us like we have to deal with two. Cancel out the duplicate music stations and merge together the original or exclusive content so no matter what receiver you get, you get the exact same content.

I added the "Best of XM" to my Sirius subscription on Monday and it has worked great since. My only issue is that when I listen to my Stiletto 2 via Wi-Fi I cannot get the XM channels. I verified with the channel guide on Sirius's website that some of the XM channels are available online, but cannot access them even through the online web player. I know that XM has the sirius channels on their online player. Anyone know what the issue with that is?

Select games. Great that means that when ever cindy crosby is playing that game will be one of the select ones. Now of course the NBA will be more important but those NBA post game interviews are going to be horrid. Alex Ovechkin speaks better english.

Has anyone else been having problems listening to XM online? I've been unable to access it for days, and unsurprisingly, tech support is utterly and completely unresponsive.

What channels will we lose?? they can't add channels like this without us losing something.. when they bring one more football game on Saturday they take a channel off (202).. if they added all these channels and we haven't lost anything then who is lying about what??

I think it's going to become a bandwidth issue. Look at how many channels play-by-play uses on the 'home' satellite system, now you need that many on the 'guest' network.

Do any OEM radios get the "best of"? I signed up for the 'best of sirius" 2 days ago, and there's nothing yet in my Hyundai. They did tell me it would take about 3 days for it to work - not sure why it would take so long, but...

I have prepaid 3 years on XM (until 2010). I called to add 'Best of Sirius'. They could not just add it to my existing plan. They wanted to refund me for the balance of my 3 years, start a new three year plan and then add best of sirius. I asked why I can't just pay the 4 bucks on a credit card monthly and she said they do not offer best of sirius as a stand alone package. they only can bill full XM with best of sirius together. I told her no thanks.

Ron-- Wonder if you might have the same issue I did.

My original XMRO account was tied to my ORIGINAL XM receiver. It died about four years ago. I've been through a Roady XT, an Xpress, and am now on another XT. My widget (I'm on a Mac) stopped working recently, and I decided to try it the ol' fashioned way through the XM site. Lo and behold, it told me that my account was suspended because my reciever had been deactivated (and the last receiver change was in April, though XMRO worked until last week).

Might want to check and see if this could be it...

You can add Volvo and some Ford radios to that as well.

I believe the SL2 uses servers at Zing to do the interent radio. They probably have not been updated yet. When Sirius does channel changes it usually takes them a couple days to get these servers inline.

It sounds like XMRO is flaky in general lately.. I have no problem with the XM channels. However I upgraded to the Best of Sirius plan (which says it includes online access). The Sirius channels work great on my radio, but the online player says I'm not subscribed to them.

@ otaku91:

The BuildAGadget player is still functioning (though the worldmusic channel renumbering needs to be recognized).

On a previous story here I saw a picture of a Skyfi2 which happens to be one of my XM recievers along with a Myfi. So it looks like The Best of Sirius will work on my recievers.

Ryan, could you please get the XM Radio Online issue answered? I and three coworkers were using the Yahoo Widget to play XM, and now all of a sudden its dead. I have tried Starplayr and every other 3rd party app and none of them work.

This is not helping keep current customers satisfied, and its not leeching subs. If I am paying for a couple of radios already and do not have access to a window to setup a unit in my office, then I should be able to use an unobtrusive music client to access the content we are already paying for. Its RIDICULOUS that I have to run their fucking awful web based client that I have to touch every few minutes to keep it from disconnecting. This infuriates me and my other coworkers are also very unhappy. I even sold them on car units by them listening to my computer for a while.

SIRIXM, this is NOT helping. You are only pissing off your current customer base even more!

Signed up online yesterday at 6 AM and was listening to Howard by 6:15 on my Inno. Not sure who thinks that Martha Stewart is a "best of" channel. When I tuned in, they were using a blender to make smoothies or something. Not exactly riveting radio ("ooooh, look at that beautiful color!").
I had Sirius but switched to Xm over reception issues. Very happy with this now. Is Howard and the Playboy channel worth an extra 4$ a month? Not sure but this is my primary entertainment. I don't have cable and my tv never goes on. I have satellite radio on all day. I sleep to it. I would like to see them throw in NPR and a few music channels that are missing from XM. One thing I have noticed - Opie and Anthony sound very amateurish and - well, stupid - next to Howard who is, despite his vulgarity, a bright guy who knows how to keep a show moving along.

Are we going to see advertising any time in the near future?? 90% of people do not even know they merged. If I was waiting to buy after the merger, I would still be waiting.

I'm not impressed with the amount of Sirius radios that are unable to get the best of programming. It feels to me as if Sirius is giving the shaft to those subscribers who have been with the company for years and have the same radios that built this company but are now being told "Screw you, you want the rest of the programming, go get a new radio." If the radio is more than two years old, chance are you are not able to get the update. Even worse is those with the factory installed car radios are in the same boat.
I'd be willing to put out an extra 4 dollars a month for more sports programming and future offerings, but pick up a new radio to pay for a higher subscription, no thanks.

Long wait time to add the best of sirius to xm... high call volume!

I thought I read here (in the comments under another post) that a Sirius lifetime subscriber said they had to pay $150 for the XM channels ...

Thank you for asking my question. I guess I will have to wait for Sirius to update their webplayer before I have any hope of getting the update to my Stiletto 2. For all you Sirius subscribers with the "Best of XM" package do you all have channel names? Mine just has XM and then the channel number. I see XM subscribers with Sirius have not only the channel names but logos already and everything. Seems Sirius is slow to the game on this.

I added Best of Sirius to my older Skyfi2 units no problem, tried to add Best of Xm to my Sportscaster replay and no good, very odd that the XM Skyfi's can take it and the basic equivalent on Sirius cant, time to cancel the Sirius and get another Skyfi2

the press release mentioned above has this sentence: "Best of Both Packages Will Be Available on Existing Radios"

i have an early radio, and it's not available. sure would be nice if they'd offer me some kind of rebate if i wanted to get a new radio.

My Sonata was up and running with Best of Sirius in about an hour after I got off the phone. Maybe you need to refresh your signal.

On XM, it seems I have to add the Sirius channels best-of package each radio, so my first radio becomes $17/month and each additional radio becomes $11/month instead of $7/month.

I say, "Feh."

How do you refresh your signal?

All XM radios support the "Best Of" and all of them already support the future "A La Carte" option. It's always been a feature of XM to support seamless channel updates and conditional access on all channels on the platform.
It's the Sirius receivers that cannot do all of these features, unfortunately. Remember when Sirius tried to put in the sports tier channel mirrors (trying to be like XM)?? That came off the birds a day later since so many radios got messed up by it.

I hope the future platform will be based on the XM technology. The Sirius technology feels like its from 1990s Russia.

@Aegrotatio: I have three XM radios and only have the Best of SIRIUS on two of them. It's possible.

And how can there be a "class action lawsuit" over this?? It's an OPTION. You're still getting the same channels you had PRIOR to the "Best of" offerings. You haven't lost anything, you just haven't GAINED anything.

You can sue someone for anything but if I had to guess I would say a suit would be based off the press release linked above were it says

" Best of Both Packages Will Be Available on Existing Radios"

"Following the merger of SIRIUS and XM, consumers will be able to obtain the best of both SIRIUS and XM, on any of today's satellite radio devices with one monthly subscription"

And its not just old radios I bought a car in March with Sirius that can not get the best of channels. I decided to pay for the Sirius unit based on all the info released by Sirius and XM.

Will there be portable players that get Sirius & XM in the future? Sure would be nice if subscibers that are unable to get "best of" get priority.

well i orderd the best of sirius channels on my skifi2 they popped up on the radio within 5 miniutes im loving it i got rid of the old sportster radio

I have the Orbitor so i cannot get the Best Of or A La Carte package. I'll just wait for the interoperable radios to come out being that i dont feel like the "best of XM" is really the best. What about the music channels?

I found out the news today when I came across this site, which I surf every couple of days.

Actually, I haven't paid for my XM service in about two months, due to the expiration date on my cc having changed. I tried updating it on the site and kept running into technical issues and holding for them was a no no.

I had just read the article while I was on hold so I asked them to update my card on file and add the Best of Sirius onto my account. Five minutes was all it took, and I went to my car to check on the update.

At first, some of the 100 channels were missing, then about two mintues later, I noticed ch 101 had been moved to 97, and the NFL now occupied a bunch of the 100 chanels, up to 115, I think.

Quick and painless. The NFl is a must have for football junkies like myself. I'm not usually on the road on Sundays, but when I am on my was to the bar or friend's house, I'd like to know that I can listen in and not miss any of the action.

Heck, it's $4 bucks a months. One dollar a week.

Worth it!!!

I have a Scion xB with the dealer installed OEM XM Tuner. Basically it is a Toyota OEM and I was able to add The Best of SIRIUS without a hitch.

Elmo it is my understanding that the streaming via Wifi for the Sirius Stiletto comes from Zing servers. Until Zing updates their servers to stream the Best of XM channels and also figure out a way to know if you have a family plan or not, well you get the point.

I know in the past when SIRIUS has moved, removed or added channels, it took Zing about 2 weeks before it was streaming on the Stiletto via Wifi.

I can understand the frustration that many are feeling. This does appear to be a mess for many that never knew their recently purchased tuner would not be compatible. I guess I am blessed that my Scion OEM tuner is working just fine. I don't plan to add the Best of XM to my Stiletto. Just nothing being offered in that package that I am interested in or that I can't just listen to my existing XM tuner to get.

Wow got er dun!!!Thanx Ryan the toll free numbers earlier in this comment posting worked not only fine but right quick. It beats calling the regular customer service number and this time around I was able to talk to someone on the same continient as we are, I just follwed the prompts to get to a rep,Steve hooked me right up on 2 out of 4 of my radios. My Starmate and my Sportster which are the two I use the most anyway. The Orbiter and the Sirius 1 cannot accept the upgrade. In my situation this works out ok and I was able to still have monthly billing as opposed to going online and paying for it quarterly. So to all of you thinking about upgrading to the best of XM do it over the phone and it took less than 2 minutes and the XM channels popped up on my Sportster 4 right in front of me.The play by plays are there as well as Public radio etc. So at least 14 channels are added, I hope more will be on the way,but its a start.

The best of XM on Sirius , now includes the NBA . I thought Sirius had the NBA , and the 24 hour NBA channel ( Sirius channel 127 . ) Sirius's channel line-up now shows channel 127 as Sports play by play . When did Sirius drop the NBA , and when did XM pick up the NBA ? Did I miss something , somewhere ?

What's confounding is that everyone still has the dilemma of choosing between XM and Sirius! Emphasis on "dilemma".

And what with 'best of' plans and owning multiple radios, the total monthly rates are kind of high. I'd expect to have access to the full gamut of XM and SIRIUS for a single, no nonsense fee.

I have XM in my new car, and Sirius in my home, but I record the Stern show (on Sirius) daily, which I listen to in the car, which gives me XM and "best of" Sirius (so to speak) in the car already. And since I'm an internet radio junkie in the home...I don't really need to do anything! Except I think XM reception in the home is better than Sirius. In which case I could switch out Sirius for XM in the home, and add the best of Sirius for Stern. At least that would resolve the reception issue in the home. Decisions!

It seems to me like they are steering people towards XM. If you look at it unless you are a fan of Opie and Anthony there is really no reason to subscribe to Sirius with best of XM. However if you subscribe to XM and get best of Sirius your getting MLB, NHL some NFL and Nascar. Plus you get Howard and Opie and Anthony if thats your thing. For the wife you get Oprah and Martha.

Plus Playboy and the music is going to end up being the same in a few months anyway.

UGH.

Why can't I get "Left of Center", "Underground Garage", "First Wave" or any of the other great music stations on my Inno??? So annoying! Best of? Hardly. I like Howard and all, but I want Sirius' great music.

Because this was a promise made to the FCC, SEC and consumers when they lobbied for the approval. It was also stated in a press release a year ago that all radios would be able to receive "Best Of" programming. A lot of people made purchase decisions since then based on the Sirius statements and press release.

Aegroalito, that is such a good a analogy of Sirius's technology. So funny!

All three of my radios do NOT work!!!! What a deal!!!

What do you have? I knew from the get go that my Orbiter and Sirius 1 wouldnt take the upgrade as I haggled with them big time when the Canadian Channels came on line.So I reasoned it out like this newer models get newer technology.Like my 1995 Mac Performa with the 540MB hard drive and the 9600 baud modem.Try surfing the internet on that then and imagine doing it today..So Its time to upgrade. I do agree though on 1 point,1995 to 2004 is 9 years and technology took off in leaps and bounds, at least some one should have had the foresight to take a radio made back then in 04 and be smart enough to design it with room for expansion.I feel for this guy not having any radio to receive the upgrade.Do what I did, get one refurbished on Ebay [Sportster 4 with SUB 1boombox]I got a nice deal for under 80 bucks shipping included. The one other point is that we are being charged for the best of channels,I do agree that some should have been thrown in for being loyal subscribers to either service. Then the counter point is if you dont want it dont pay for it. Again time will tell.In general Im happy with sat radio.

This is stupid of Sirius XM they should just offer a free radio with a one year or two year membership. When are new radios coming out that will get all of Sirius and XM? otherwise people will have to go and get new radios if they want that service once it comes out.

I have been loyal to Sirius, but unfortunately I am starting to loose faith in this company. It is dragging it's feet instead of doing things swiftly once the merger got approved. I am now thinking that it was better for Sirius to continue on its own to grow and let XM die and pick some of the pieces later.

Just received an email from Sirius in response to no NBA. they say at this time NO NBA on sirius. They are WORKING on it. If you check out the XM site, they have the NBA, but offer NO INFORMATION, just the fact it is coming. Come on Sirius--you have sprung a scam on your listeners by knowing some of us chose Sirius because of the NBA and to get us to pay 4 bucks more, you move it to XM as a BEST OF, oh yeah, we can get Oprah, whoopie!Since they own XM now, if the contract was up just re-sign and keep it on Sirius. They did this a couple years back and finally re-signed.When they learn that another 4 bucks is a squeeze that we won't pay they'll sign on the dotted.Email them and bitch.

Where can I find the concise statement from XM/Sirius on what all this means to their lifetime subscribers?

What? You say there isn't such a statement? You mean that the most loyal customers that shelled out $$$ way-back when this was all iffy to succeed aren't being taken care of?

I hope there isn't a rip-off happening or else three words will appear: class action lawsuit.

boyd durkin

It really looks like both Sirius and XM are in need of some Product Managers that know what they're doing. Communications, launch, transition, customer value...FAIL.

Hey at least you are paying monthly and have the option to stop paying. I paid over $400 a year ago for a lifetime subscription to sirius because they had the NBA, and now I'm not getting NBA, they want me to pay another $100 to get the NBA in the "Best of XM" package, and I cannot cancel a lifetime subscription under any circumstance. I am truly feeling scammed.
