It's officially official now. The Federal Communications Commission announcement on the merger approval of Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. has officially been made public on the FCC.gov website.

It's add one, lose one and a big question mark for the Opie & Anthony Show today. WROX/Norfolk becomes the latest affiliate for O&A, picking up the show to run in middays from 10am-2pm. The 3-hour regular radio slot originating from CBS Radio's WXRK/New York will run on delay and be extended to four hours so WROX can still play music in middays. In the loss column, O&A find themselves off the air at Citadel's WEDG/Buffalo. Meanwhile, the show finds themselves in a precarious position with XM Satellite Radio as their contract is due to run out in 65 days and there has been no contact about their deal being renewed. Presumably, the hold-up in XM renewing the program has been due to the pending merger, so that could change now that the FCC has voted to approve the XM-Sirius alliance. Even so, there is no word whether the approved merger will benefit the show. Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin has repeatedly said he doesn't believe in sharing content with regular radio. Also, there is no timetable yet for the two companies to begin operating as one merged entity, so O&A fans will wait and watch as this one goes down to the wire.

I wouldn't be bragging about the merger - the FCC and the NAB/iBiquity/HD Alliance have just about destroyed Satrad, driving down its stock, and now, Satrad receivers will probably be mandated to include expensive HD Radio. This has been a losing proposition all around.

I can't help but think a consolidated SIRIXM company will have better performance in the long run.
Back in the winter of 2001, I thought about investing Amazon at about $10 per share. I thought then, how can this company last? No cash flow and not profitable. Today the stock closed at $75.98 per share.
Who knows, maybe the combined company lasts, provides a good service and will ultimately create long term shareholder wealth.

Someone should start a viral "Save SatRad" campaign. Subscribers that can afford to do so, should support the company from the retail side (through multiple ADDITIONAL FULL SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGES) to boost revenues, growth, industry penetration, awareness, accessibility and positive financial buzz.
Get whatever you can comfortably afford (within reason). Multiple that by millions of subscribers and you have manufactured artificial growth (stick it to the shorts for a change) until the company can realize their synergies and become profitably competitive in a crowded and converging market environment. I'd be willing to sign up for 2, maybe 3, for as long as it takes. Who else is in?
Give it as gifts to friends, relatives, colleagues, teachers, students, girlfriends, boyfriends, wedding gifts, graduation gifts, etc. Revenues and cash flow will rise. Wall St. $$$ will follow and the stock price will rise once the wake of the merger dissipates. The financial performance and future guidance will get better. It's just a matter of time. Remember when AAPL was $3 n'change back in Dec. 1997? Or $7 n'change back in 2003?

And, guess who is going to have to pay - time for another expensive court challenge. The HD jamming machine, which doesn't even work, will bring down Satrad. I agree with you, but people these days take everything for granted (yes you, under 30 demographic) and they have such a short attention span that what is cool today is passe' tomorrow. How many people who own I-pods have satellite radio? A very low percentage I would guess. I would rather listen to radio than watch television, which makes me a relic from the past I suppose. I have lost a ton of money also; despite that I still think the technology of satellite radio is amazing, and it would be a shame if it doesn't realize it's potential. The bottom line: people don't recognize how fantastic this product is, and they are way too preoccupied with inferior alternatives. It speaks volumes about the sad, junk culture we live in.
